FULL NAME baek nari 백나리 meaning white lily.
NICKNAME(S)
lily/lili 릴리 her korean birth name translates to the flower “lily” which has become a true classic nickname for her college friends. she also uses the latter spelling “lili” as an alias on naver webtoon to mask her identity when posting webtoon stories. she thinks it’s too obvious to make her username include the original spelling since a lot of her friends use it on her.

our first snow 우리의 첫 눈 a metaphorical nickname that her parents often use in an endearing manner. the first snow is a significant event in south korea due to the luck it entails, which reflects in this nickname as nari is the baek family's first-born daughter (coincidentally born in the winter too) who is seen as a "blessing amongst headaches" as her mother has said. implies that she's the current (and predicted long-running) breadwinner as well.

nabi 나비 used as a joke mostly. whenever nari surprises others at the workplace by being rather bold or coming to work in some slightly interesting clothing, they hoot out the nickname “nabi” to show shock at her “un-nari-like behavior.” the nickname nabi kind of represents an alter ego of herself who is more confident and attention-grabbing, hence why it is used in such a context. it also means butterfly, ironically, to emphasize metamorphosis and change.

nana 나나 it's slightly impossible to shorten her already short name. if anyone of her friends or family want to simplify it further or speak with affection, nana is the nickname to use.

bom's mom 봄 엄마 nari has a lovely golden retriever named bom, after the word "spring." she has an instagram account dedicated to bom's antics and people who follow it usually refer to her as bom's mom. staff members at the pet groomer's place who she's grown close to also jokingly call her this when bom is ready to be taken home.

LANGUAGES SPOKEN
korean, native proficieny (100%) nari's mother tongue. primary communication language.

japanese, professional working proficiency (77%) took a japanese language course in her undergraduate years and continued to take online classes throughout her work life. she’s able to practice the language very frequently, with her best friend and roommate being japanese, as well as with international applicants or partners at level station company. while she may not be extremely fluent in proverbs, metaphors and can sometimes still need help in grammar, her vocabulary covers most conversations in all possible settings.

english, limited proficiency (45%) nari has only learnt bits and pieces of english by consuming english media. films, shows, and the occasional browsing of english webtoons. she can't really speak past the how are you's and standard greetings. since most of her vocabulary comes from modern english-based platforms, she does have some awareness of slang words and the sort, occasionally dropping them when she's able to understand their contexts.

OCCUPATION
assistant manager of human resources, level station company (est. 2016) working her way up through the ranks for the past four or so years since she graduated from her undergraduate degree, nari is blessed to be part of a big corporate environment such as this. while she may not be directly involved in all the wonderful creativity and fascinating technology, she gets a front-row seat to watch the magic.

webtoon artist and author via naver webtoon (est. 2010) if kids in american high school were using wattpad as their emotional escape for the unwanted pressure on their shoulders, nari was using naver webtoon. while she never took off in her earlier years (since they were definitely some rough pieces of work), she has some works that were published during her years as a university student and now, a working woman, that gained significant readership. this is her way of still following her passions as a once-hopeful art class enthusiast. nobody knows about this side-gig except for her aunt, mirae and her best friend, emi.

FACE CLAIM kang seulgi, red velvet.
BACKUP park sodam, actress.

MEASUREMENTS 164 cm + 49 kg.

APPEARANCE seulgi during red flavor, psycho, monster and power up era. nari originally has a darker brown-black hair color, though she makes it a routine to dye her hair a range of chocolate browns and shimmery jet blacks to appear more chic. as for her piercings, she got her two ears pierced (standard lobe) as a child and got two further piercings during her years at university. she currently has a helix on her right and a cartilage on her left, typically using her helix piercing more regularly during work days and in the case that she does go out, she tries to accessorize a bit more with all of them. wears glasses but also a user of contact lenses depending on her mood. she currently has no body modification or tattoos, but is hoping to explore colored tattoos of her favorite ghibli characters sometime soon. makeup also plays a role in nari’s day-to-day life; she’s not an expert but she does know her way around brands and what works for her. blessed with supple skin that doesn’t breakout frequently, nari is often sporting light concealer or cushion under her eyes and on her chin to even her dark circles and spots with the rest of her skin. a definite er for eyeliner and all the good but is very lazy to actually do it during the mornings before work. if she gets up super early, she might. nari appreciates warm reds for her lips, or even shades, but steers away from brighter pinks and cooler toned lip products. apart from that, she never knows if her blush and contour are too much or too little, always worried she looks like a self-tanned, sunburnt disaster or a powdered sugar donut — especially at the office.

FASHION STYLE see nari's wardrobe here. nari often likes to segregate her style for work, and for not work. while she is often in baggy clothing for half of the time she lives, she’s quite a fashionable person when effort is exerted. her wardrobe mainly consists of medium to darkwash denim of straight or wide-leg cut, oversized anything, sweater vests, cropped tops, itty bitty cardigans, collared shirts, pretty blouses, some winter coats, midi skirts and the occasional mini skirt moment. has a very narrow collection of shoes. only owns three pairs, believing these are the bare essentials; a pair of white trainers, her hard-earned platform leather loafers and a clearly neglected pair of black high heels.
❋ work attire nari opts for comfortable clothes such as wide-leg jeans, midi skirts and loose trousers. her tops are usually contrasted to her more carefree bottoms by the use of blouses, sweater vests and blazers, portraying a business casual look. she likes to use her loafers for this occasion. although some days, she may just come in and look like every other millenial or gen z kid; in her favorite jeans and a sweatshirt with some trainers.
❋ casual attire for more casual endeavors like hanging out or get-togethers, nari’s style only changes a tiny bit. everything from work still applies, but she’s more likely to wear something a tad more revealing or trendy like her small cardigans and mini skirts. don’t be mistaken though, she will always love jeans and a sweatshirt more than anything.

keep width 125. don't worry about height as long as it's bigger than 185!
THE TYPES infj-t, 6w5, chaotic good, ravenpuff.
THE SIGNS capricorn sun, libra moon, scorpio rising.
THE INSPIRATIONS sutton brady, the bold type. marnie, when marnie was there. moon gangtae, it's okay not to be okay.

PERSONALITY positive respectful, consistent, reliable, nurturing. neutral private, self-sacrificing, idealistic. negative insecure, avoidant, obsessive, uptight.

nari is indeed what most friend groups would label as “the mom friend.” a trustworthy gal who gets people together in spite of her introverted roots. the type of friend that arrives ten minutes early to gatherings and orders for the whole cohort. moreover, she resembled the actions of most soft-hearted mothers or older sister figures that probably only exist in the fictional world. while soft-spoken, nari won’t hesitate to converse or greet others to ensure they are comfortable. even more so when she’s with her friends as she always tries to check in with everyone, no matter what cost. she’ll always let you have the last slice of pizza, she’ll never say no to going to a buzzing party (really not her scene) if you ask her to, and she most certainly would let you cry on her shoulder, even if she really wanted to do the same on yours.

truly an empath, nari feels deeply for others that she cares about. one reason why she's a great listener and often the person her friends go to, or even people at work who may face troubles navigating their professional environment. she words her sentences with such care, it's nearly impossible for any sort of offense to happen on the other end of the conversation. nari is very emotional deep down, and while she will rarely bring this to anybody else's attention, it makes her a great heart-felt advice giver too. simply because she will understand without questioning too much. she has a great respect for boundaries, especially since she expects for others to do the same with her own.

a rather tender aura radiates from her; the kind that softly laughs at your jokes when nobody else does, the one who’ll support your decision, even if sometimes it’s not the most logical. she’s cheerful, but not loud. just enough optimism to fuel someone through some challenging work or a rough day. she takes good care of others, and somehow manages to appear well-taken care of too. that’s just who baek nari was. her dependable nature often makes it difficult for her adult-life friends to view her in a childish light. the prominence of her eldest daughter syndrome had definitely taken quite a toll on her developmental years, with most of her personality traits coinciding with what her parents had expected of her as their firstborn girl. it’s the only space she’s ever known to occupy.

while she is sometimes prone to being dependent on her parents to dictate her decision-making processes, nari is proficient in sustaining herself. she’s not exactly a lover of routine and monotonous work, being victim to burnouts and lazing around for weeks after continous days of no rest from heinous tasks. however, she is consistent. mundane tasks and whatnot; they weren’t optional things, they’re needed to function. taught from a young age, nari eventually just started treating certain things like regular maintenance until they grew into habits. it was like a broken record that she didn’t mind playing over and over again. the same can be said for her work life. there’s not much wiggle room to complain further, so she just gets over the small things to move on to the next best one. human resources could only get so exciting.

the downside to consistency is the aftermath of hyperfixation. nari’s burnouts get quite bad whenever she buries herself in work or some short-term goal she suddenly imposed on herself. her reserved nature usually influences her burnouts and makes her detach from her friends and family, not replying to their messages for days, leaving her work untouched after eighty percent of it is finished — leaving it all just to drown herself in webtoon binging or netflix watching. her obssessive tendencies don’t stop with just her tangible targets; it’s a clear sign that she has never outgrown the need to feel validated. a half fifty girl who still seeks bandaids from her parents to patch up her insecurity. it feels like a long-term goal that’s too impossible to finish, and yet nari is still putting it in her mental to-do list every single day.

there was so much she had given up that she didn’t know if she could get back, and that didn’t only apply to her parents. maybe even friends or previous lovers. self-sacrificial tendencies paired with the fast-paced obsessiveness equaled some bad decisions that overtake her own well-being. in the end, there would be nobody else to blame but herself, putting all this added pressure just for some temporary love.

a lot of nari’s faults and undevelopedness stems from the unacknowledged resentment and sadness of her inner child. always the careful, calculated and intricate one, without the chance to take an impulse choice and run along with it. she’s grown to be a bit of a particular person because of it. not necessarily bad, like how particular she is with her food, but not necessarily good either… like how she struggles when someone on her team doesn’t follow what she expects. a perfectionist is an easy way out of it, but it’s much more uptight and frustrating, especially since she’s not much of a conflict approacher either. if someone executes something in a way she’s not used to, she’ll simply take it upon herself to fix it and do it the way she’s always done. nari gets incredibly anxious when things slip out of her control, or if something occurs in a way she’s not familiar with. furthermore, she’s just too afraid that it will cause a dejected reaction from her peers or superiors if she doesn’t take care of it in the way expected of her.

for someone who says that communication is key, nari has some terrible talking skills. not in the way that she’d get fired from her job—that’s practically the essence of her work anyway—but in a manner that affects her relationships. growing up with the urge to repress her opinions as to avoid scolding and arguments, nari is not the type to raise her thoughts if they are contradictory to another person’s. she was never brought up in a place where explicit conversations and apologies were exchanged between her family, so she’s sometimes clueless to her poor communication. her emotions are closed-off and only welcomed to her own self as she tries not to let others see this more vulnerable side of her. it often leads to more bottled up emotions that hide a very sharp temper, never knowing when she’ll explode. in the case that she does express her disdain, nari opts to be more passive aggressive in her speaking tone and actions. she later regrets it when she’s all alone, pondering on her thoughts, but would never acknowledge the weird sequence of events ever again.

BACKGROUND
early life (1994-2007)
on christmas eve, go hyejoo and baek daejung were gifted with their first daughter. the bundle of joy they held that cozy december night was baek nari; the undeniable star child in their household.

nari’s family comes from a humble background. before she was born, her mother worked at a call center agency while her father was a high school math teacher. when she graced their abode with her cries and giggles, their lifestyles had to adjust to the new addition. hyejoo could no longer take long shifts at the call center, so she opted to work regular office hours as a customer service assistant at a small company within the area. nari’s grandparents would be around her for most of the day when hyejoo was at work. daejung would come home earlier, right around five in the afternoon, just in time to eat slices of fruit with nari. when nightfall came, hyejoo would arrive to eat dinner and spend the remaining hours with their daughter.

hyejoo and daejung were definitely not wealthy. they had enough money to feed and clothe themselves for the next year or so, but after that, it seemed unclear. their motivations to pursue careers and economic prosperity was solely rooted from their desire to live a good life with their daughter. to be a family who doesn’t struggle. with hyejoo’s job at the new business and daejung seeking side-jobs at cram schools for extra money, the baeks were on the right track.

growing up in the age of princesses and evil step-mothers, nari’s childhood was primarily influenced by children’s literature, media and fairytales. books were her first love as a four year old learning to read letters and form coherent phrases. every kindergarten class would be her trying to show that she’d memorized the retelling of the sleeping beauty — how she didn’t need a story book to recite the entirety of the goldilocks story. it wouldn’t be a surprise to her teachers and peers that she had a knack for storytelling, both in written and verbal. a four year old girl could only scribble incomprehensible drawings paired with short sentences to convey the scene, but as nari had progressed further into schooling, so did her ability to show and tell.

by the time nari was six years old, she had pages and pages of her scrap notebooks filled. stories accompanied with quirky doodling outlined in purple and green color pencils. those lines were her most prized possessions, hence the need to leap at her parents and put on a show. enthusiastically, nari would recite her stories word-by-word, then flipped the notebook to face her parents on the sofa to show off her illustrations. much like any other pair of parents to an endearing little girl, hyejoo and daejung would marvel at her work with affection. she was simply adorable. exaggerated gasps and laughs, ruffling her bangs once she had finished presenting, then finally, a kiss on either side of her cheek. nari loved the praise, wouldn’t anyone feel the same?

the baeks’ small, warm trio soon had two cheerful additions. after nari’s nine years of only-child-privileges, a menacing pair of twins named hanbyeol and haeyeon were born in the summer of 2003. the two were huge contrasts to nari’s innocent presence. the twins entered the world with loud wails and already mischievous laughs, nari being amused by their odd appearances as newborns. life at home was a lot less boring with two babies around. nari’s storybooks now had another use; to read to hanbyeol and haeyeon while they rested in a wide crib. her fourth grader mind would formulate make-believe stories that she’d sprout out loud while looking over her siblings. at times, her grandparents and parents would overhear through the open doors while they laughed at her wild imagination. she would be the first princess in line to their little kingdom, beaming with smug victory at haeyeon, the second princess. nari ignored that hanbyeol, the first prince, could be next to the crown. it was her world anyways.

nari’s universe was set up for the picturesque green fields in disney movies and ghibli films. her world, however, was not built for the abrupt transition past her enchanted castle.

middle school came packaged in a less-than-welcoming ensemble. lined notebooks filled to the brim with notes and the beginning of her algebra journey instead of scraps of her tales. cram school with her dad after she attended the dreaded long day of real school. the hours of the afternoon were no longer plagued with hand aches from writing too many words, or grinning from ear to ear about a new story idea. it was all numbers, and the only words she’d digest were from a glossy textbook page.

although it was terrible and so unlike the wonders of writing, it thoroughly made her parents proud. she could tell. her mother would smile the same smile from when she would tell her original nari stories from when she was in elementary school, a warm flush on her cheeks that swallowed her eyes into half-moons. the ruffle of her hair showed how happy her father was whenever she had done well after cram school sessions. nari wasn’t sure if she really did like where she was headed—not that she had any idea at that point—but the swell of her heart and the adrenaline of pride from herself and her parents. perhaps this feeling was better than her literary daydreams? she didn’t quite know how to explain in her confused mind, all she could really muster from it was that she would do anything to feel the thrill of adoration over and over again.

middle school to early high school (2007-2009)
it would become evident to nari that certain things were deserving of love and praise. her obsession with it had grown to be something prominent within her place in the family dynamic.

with two other attention-grabbing kids in her previously quiet life, she was starting to grow into a mold that neither of her parents knew they were sculpting nari into. small things like never asking to buy toys as a prize to her self-motivated academic achievements; always sticking to what’s told of her; being so forgiving to her frustrating siblings who ran thin lines on her patience (not that nari didn’t love them or have a good relationship with the twins, but the overbearing older sister role had to be filled at some point).

these small repressive habits eventually fed into bigger ones. her opinions and thoughts that would create clashes with her mother or father would often be stashed to the back of her mind to later ponder over and sigh. a heavy feeling situated itself in the back of . it would never leave until she felt a glimpse of a smile from her mother and father after acing a maths test, or when she heard how they spoke so highly of her to their gossiping neighbors. the weight was worth it, even if that heavy lump would return to visit again without fail.

high school (2009-2012)
if nari’s first love was writing in it’s barest, most traditional form, then webtoons would be the lover that got her back into the rush of creative juices and building her own worlds.

of course, a fifteen year old first year high schooler with a ton of responsibility and imposed pressure would need an outlet at some point. after not writing anything solid for a couple of years, this sudden adrenaline to throw herself into a new universe of imagery was an exciting adventure. not to mention, her family had decided to migrate to mapo, in the big city of seoul, to seek better economic opportunities and for nari to get the best resources for her education and work.

it was a year full of new chapters to live out.

perhaps the best one was meeting her mother’s younger—and cooler—sister, her aunt. go mirae was nari’s inspiration and role model. although her mother was never keen on her daughter’s habit of putting mirae on a high pedestal, she just let it sit through, hoping it was a mere phase. mirae lived within the district but commuted to more bustling places like itaewon and hongdae to showcase her artwork. since she visited the baeks quite frequently upon their arrival at mapo, nari was beyond excited to have someone who was actively pursuing a creative career. in her mind, she would think, maybe she could do it too. because of this, the aunt and niece duo quickly became close.

not long after they had settled into their new home, nari began her first year at an all girls high school. there, she met han minyoung and instantly became friends with her because of their shared love for art and all things creative. nari was fascinated by the number of people she’d met in the city who so freely aspired to be what she could only secretly hope to be. a creeping envy would swamp her thoughts between daydreams in english class, maybe she should just tell her parents about her dreams? it wasn’t like they didn’t know that it was a great passion for her.

to nari’s dismay, the one time she had the courage to discard the lump in all by herself by actually speaking her thoughts, things went quite roughly. before she had even finished saying the things she so carefully crafted for the occasion, her father said, “come on, nari, you’re not a child anymore. be realistic now.” her mother followed right after with a small nod, though with a tad more sympathy laced into her voice as she spoke gently. “we know you love writing and all, but.. we’re not rich, honey. okay?” nari remembers the way her mother sat next to her in-between. she wished she hadn’t so she could do a better job at hiding her tears of anger, sadness and mourning. “think of something that will give you a good life. maybe you can just write as a hobby, yeah?”

nari hated it all. the lump in getting new neighbors as her body began to sink into the weight. she couldn't tell if she hated the way her parents were looking down on her for the first time in a long while, or if she felt betrayed by their immediate ridicule and discouragement. what was the difference between her doing this art as more than a hobby? if others could, why couldn't she?

some things deserve all the delight and privilege of being loved, but nari understood that others would be shunned from it.

second year into high school and nari was getting the hang of her demanding routine. well, it was mostly her own doing anyways. excelling at school, taking care of her siblings and the chores, cram school, and on top of that, her webtoon account was in dire need of updates. she hadn’t made it too big yet, her first webtoon gaining a small following that made her feel incredibly proud despite it seeming miniscule. she even told her aunt about it over some instant noodles and carbonated drinks, to which mirae congratulated her and wished nari luck. she even said not to forget her when her niece gets famous — not that nari was counting on that ever happening after the fiasco with her mother and father.

after the dreadful conversation with her parents, she had just gone back to being their good daughter nari the next morning. her parents never questioned it either, acting just the way they usually did too. the talk was never mentioned again, proceeding with daily routine and finally making it into another year closer to the end of high school. it wasn’t much of a welcoming exit either way, with university waiting around the door. although, months past that talk, nari had slightly grown out of her melodramatic monologues. she did understand that the privilege of being a creative was not one under her disposal, given that she had no extraordinary resources saved for her. while her aunt certainly was the same, mirae was never thought of as a "good child" and was deemed as the rebellious risk-taker between her and hyejoo. nari had failed to discard this pressuring title soon enough; she felt as though it would be hers forever. she detested labels, and yet she was the walking fineprint of having too many.

university and current life (2012-present)
high school would pass over and nari graduated with flying colors into a scholarship at yonsei university. she opted to take business management as she had no interest in the sciences and was too cowardly to dive into more… creative courses. on the bright side, she had thought of a great new webtoon idea that she planned to execute in early summer vacation before her university requirements would take over her schedule. nari wasn't too sure if it would be a hit—though she secretly hoped for a big break someday—but she would have fun with this webtoon if it was her last glance at storytelling for a while.

much like her fourth-grader mind did, nari took this new chapter into her hands as another way to relive. nobody knew her at yonsei, so she could be someone who she couldn't be. this didn't mean she would magically go to parties and clubs to rave until her scholarship was lost, but she wanted to build something for herself (and perhaps for her parents to marvel at, again). if nari had a goal, she would be sure to achieve it.

throughout her higher education, nari outdid herself by developing her confidence bit-by-bit and joining in on societies, extra-curriculars and of course, being expectedly outstanding in her academics. she rarely took up long-term part-time jobs, apart from short internships and assistant roles related to her course. the story she had put out on naver webtoon was making more hits than she had expected, qualifying for monthly payments that would suffice for some of her spending.

after graduating with a business management degree with a specialization in human resources, nari decided to gain work experience in the real business world. living in a modern area in seoul, she had a plethora of options. a lot of companies she had applied to were large and established, nari wasn't entirely sure if that was what she wanted. that's exactly how she ended up at level station company. it was only two years in operation when she had graduated, and while many specialists and hwang-ok employees had been transferred to it, the corporation was not as intimidating and large as its parent company. nari went ahead and took up an entry-level position in human resources, working her way upward to her current position. she liked the tight-knit-ness of her department. it was an easy way for her skills to be nurtured and fit into the role she had brought upon herself. there, she met her now best friend, emiko, who previously worked in the marketing department.

as for her side hustle, it had grown almost four times since her freshman year at yonsei, even going to the extent of her publishing a second webtoon. up until now, her parents are not aware of her online presence (given it's rather modern nature), though nari often shakes her head and thinks to herself, i'm literally a full-grown woman. alongside her aunt, emi has also been let into her secret world of webtoons. it was inevitable, being best friends and roommates for the past five or so years.

overall, nari lives a comfortable life. she's grateful for her parents and all they have taught her—sacrificed for her, even—as well as her aunt who supported her when her parents did not. at the same time, she feels like she's the same fifteen year old girl stuck in a young woman's body — seeking approval for things she should have given herself freedom to do long ago.

TRIVIAS
❋ nari attended seoul girls' high school in mapo district. she studied business management at yonsei afterwards.
❋ adopted her female golden retriever, bom, after her first year at level station.
❋ she opened an instagram for bom called bom_time (spring_time) and casually posts her antics there. surprisingly has garnered a small audience from her own personal account.
❋ her webtoon profile name is SnowLili. all her related social media for webtoon purposes are under the same title.
❋ she has published two webtoons on naver so far; one complete and the other ongoing. her first webtoon called "Apple of Athena" is a fantasy romance series following the protagonist, who is a descendant of athena, and her accidental encounters with a human boy. the webtoon has gained a lot of traction over it's years of presence, getting picked up from canvas by the webtoon team to the featured section in originals. she had to work with an editor for a bit after the transfer, so nari isn't too sure if she wants to be doing webtoons with the company itself due to the private nature of her work. her second webtoon "Overtime", a romantic comedy surrounding office life, is published on canvas at the moment due to her hesitance towards pursuing formal webtoon work.
❋ uses an ipad to draw most of her webtoon scenes! can't afford a proper drawing tablet as of yet due to her investments in more flexible devices such as her ipad, phone and laptop.
❋ lives in a two bedroom apartment in the sinchon area around yonsei and the company. she lives with her best friend, emiko.
❋ a spotify pro apologist. bought it solely because of her "in my car" playlist that she needs whenever she drives.
❋ had to beg the landlord to let bom stay. it took nari a higher deposit fee just so he would say yes.
❋ used to commute a lot until she finally got her license just two years ago.
❋ didn't have a proper car until late 2020, a hyundai model. before that, she used to just rent a car for a few weeks each month.
❋ gets anxious in super crowded places with not much personal space. this is also why her routine is built to avoid as much people as possible; traveling in less busy times, be it through drive or commute; going to cafes before noon; avoiding going out on late nights, especially on weekends.
❋ nari's most recent and favorable read is "before the coffee gets cold" by toshikazu kawaguchi.
❋ to combat her fear of the dark, nari got a warm sunset lamp. she puts it in a less harsh setting when she's planning to sleep.
❋ she has a low alcohol tolerance. a very giggly and clingy drunk too, quite a contrast from her constrained actions.
❋ frequently visits her family in mapo in the weekends and holidays.
❋ wants to dye her hair a vibrant maroon-ish red but is a bit hesitant to what her peers and parents will say.
❋ a bit stingy with spending money on herself unless it's completely necessary. she's been using the same wallet and handbag that she "borrowed" from her mom since senior high school. a definite coupon and discount code hoarder.
❋ thrifts her clothes as much as possible. if not, she'll try to get second-hand pieces that emi, haeyeon or her mom don't use anymore.
❋ prefers noodles and rice to meat.
❋ never dated in high school because of how strict her parents were with her personal life. nari had her first boyfriend in her third year of university, but quickly broke it off before her final year.
❋ after getting used to early curfews during her time as a minor and her parents enforcing it enthusiastically, nari often hates to go out past 10 pm (and that's already a generous time for her). she prefers plans situated between the morning to afternoon so she can rest her social battery at night.

DAILY LIFE, ROUTINE!
monday to friday
7:10 walk bom around the neighborhood.
8:00 breakfast while skimming through emails for work, comments from webtoon readers, or look over drafts of upcoming chapters.
8:20 drop off emi to work, then arrive at level station.
8:45 - 21:00 the regular work day has these timings. nari is mostly inside the company building unless she's going for her 12:00 lunch, or an out-of-office training session for staff or interviews. in the case that she does overtime in the office, nari will finish at around 23:00. however, it's not too often since she's able to bring her work laptop home and continue any after hours work in the comfort of her couch. she'll also take this opportunity to finish up any elements she needs to tend to for her webtoon. by the end of the week, she may get dragged into a company gathering with her department or a mix and match of general employees. when this happens, she'll most likely arrive home a tad earlier than the rest of the attendees because of her social battery. the latest she'll come home is midnight.
21:30 nari tries her best to ignore work emails during this time, but it's pretty hard to when someone goes out of their way to call her. if it goes smoothly, she uses this time to relax and have dinner with emi, usually with a netflix show playing in the background.
23:00 - 3:00 nari typically goes to bed between these times depending on her mood (and work schedule). she'll snooze earlier by accident, most likely, but sleeping during later hours are when she urges herself to do some extra webtoon-related tasks or just some mindless social media scrolling.
saturday and sunday
8:45 walk bom around the neighborhood.
14:00 - 17:00 webtoon work.

most weekends will be very lazy for nari, with it being the designated work day for her webtoon to prep for the mid-week chapter update. she doesn't have a set day for uploads, but she does try to finish at least 75% of the work on saturday so the rest can be done bit by bit over the working week. if she does (miraculously) have plans in the weekend, she'll split the work between saturday and sunday when she's free, given that she visits her parents most of the time on sundays. when she isn't working on her weekend to-do list, nari will most likely huddle in her bedroom, or out on the couch if emi is at home, with a new webtoon to binge or just some k-drama on netflix. when emi manages to drag nari out, it's most likely because they'll go to get well soon café or check out some new places. otherwise, nari does enjoy a good drive around the area while playing her favorite songs.
work life balance
nari does value the importance of work-life balance, but that's not to say she's perfect at it. on most weeks, she's very consistent and particular on ending work at 21:45 sharp so she has the rest of the evening to herself. many of her colleagues envy her balanced mindset, but they're not aware of her workaholic tendencies. really, the only person who gets to see her go ham is emiko. there are days where nari just can't let go of a work task or webtoon to-do list until it's perfect and polished, sometimes going on until the early morning.
social and work life
it's no secret that baek nari prefers to be surrounded by her warm duvet and a bunch of books rather than in the stuffy heat of a restaurant with her colleagues—no matter how lovely they are at work—who will always end up buzzed by the end of the night. although she will never say no, in fear of coming across as impolite or anti-social, nari usually has some excuse to leave earlier than the others. sometimes, she conveniently requests to go to a farther restaurant so she can say, at around 23:30, "sorry everyone, i have to drive home soon since i live really far.. ah, i'm sorry!" at that point, she knows some of her male officemates think ill of her habit, but she's too worn out to care by then. if any women from the office need a drop home after their weekly gatherings after work, she's happy to do so too. when the university interns are present, especially if taiga is around, she'll stay a little longer just to make sure none of the higher-ups do anything weird.

gossip and odd topics of conversation are common whenever her colleagues and officemates gather together after a long day at work. she doesn't blame anyone for anything since frustration at someone else felt inevitable in such a corporate and competitive setting, but nari does try to refrain from joining in. sometimes, she gives just an awkward laugh or an uncomfortable nod while downing some coke. nari isn't exactly the type to defend someone either, as part of her reserved and frightful nature, but she doesn't exactly want to be part of the foolery going on. she might just give a few of her thoughts in a timid and well-articulated manner, in defense of the person being gossiped at.

NAME baek haeyeon (18).
R/S younger sister.
OCCUPATION high school student.

haeyeon and nari have a very close relationship as the two girls in the family. most of haeyeon's childhood was spent with her twin brother, hanbyeol, but nari actively tried to be close to the two of them, even before they made it out of the womb. nari would be the one to recite the bedtime stories and suggest the play-pretend-princess fiasco of their childhood. as time passed by, nari had grown busier, and haeyeon admired her sister's hardwork. she wouldn't hear the end of it from her parents either, but unlike nari, haeyeon was not much of a wavering person. she's headstrong, and is happily content with what she can achieve of her own talents. it's a relief that the two sisters had no strained relationship growing up, thanks to haeyeon's surprisingly mature way of thinking (despite her rather childish approach to life). being the older sister that nari is, she's very involved in haeyeon's life in every possible category. she was like a third parent, almost. there were a lot of things haeyeon couldn't just confide in her parents with, which is where nari came in. boy problems, flunking a test, whatever it was; nari would do her best to comfort or advice, whichever haeyeon wanted at the time. apart from those sentimental moments, haeyeon is very casual with her older sister, and from a distance, the two look like same-aged friends. having the twins were like a refreshing breath of air in their house, so nari adores the two like no other.

haeyeon and nari keep in-contact the most within their family. they chat in kakaotalk very often, in-between classes or work, even video calling each other when there's a big timeframe that allows it. while nari has scheduled visits to mapo in the weekends, she tries to make time during weekdays, like if she gets off work early, to spend separate time with her siblings.

NAME baek hanbyeol (18).
R/S younger brother.
OCCUPATION high school student.

hanbyeol and nari are more similar than haeyeon and nari. where haeyeon would be the smiling, carefree beagle of the baek family, hanbyeol and nari were quite the opposite. however, hanbyeol is more empathetic and assertive than nari has ever been. nari admires the way her siblings have such a backbone with miniscule fears. the brother and sister duo are what most could expect; the occasional bickering, but for the most part, hanbyeol and nari bond over geekish things like anime. their kkt chat history is comprised of one word replies, random emoticons and links to action figures from hanbyeol accompanied with a message typically framed like this: "noona, get this for me pls~"

much like haeyeon's relationship with nari, the two are close enough to share things with each other, but since both of them are quite reserved, it doesn't come too often. hanbyeol doesn't like to talk too much about things going on, at least in such an explicit way. he might ask nari for advice in a more subtle way, such as asking advice "for a friend" when in reality, it was for him. nari doesn't mind, she understands how it is, but she's not oblivious enough to believe his excuses to cover up anyways.

the two keep in contact through kkt, but aren't frequent texters. still, hanbyeol and nari remain close when they meet each other in-person.

NAME baek daejung and go hyejoo (50 and 48 respectively).
R/S parents.
OCCUPATION high school math teacher and customer service specialist.

nari's relationship with her parents... is an odd one. though, she assumes a lot of other asian kids probably face a similar thing. it's not that she can't be in the same room as them any longer, but there is some strain on the emotional end of their relationship. nari can talk to her parents as normal in more fun, regular functions such as harmless dinners and gatherings, but she finds herself almost drowning in their words when it turns into something more serious. she has trouble talking about her own wishes and opinions with them, in fear they will reject her thoughts. she also values their opinions a lot, probably the most important ones to her. at times, she feels that even after leaving the suffocating hold of their home, she still lives for them and their perceptions of her. nari agrees that moving out has probably bettered their relationship, leaving more time to just catch up instead of being nit-picked. although nari could never hate her parents, they did give her everything she's ever known, she holds some deep-rooted resentment inside that she doesn't know how to address. it makes her defensive and unwilling to be vulnerable, especially with her mother and father.

she keeps more contact with her dad, who's laid-back to an extent, through text messages and weekly phone calls that her mom sometimes joins in on. nari's mother isn't too communicative on text unless it's urgent, so they mostly speak on the phone. nari also visits every weekend.

NAME go mirae (40).
R/S aunt.
OCCUPATION sculptor, painter, freelance artist.

mirae is another free-spirited woman of the family. coming from nari's mother's side, nari was not expecting to meet someone so unlike her mom. slowly, after meeting in mapo during high school, nari appointed her aunt mirae as her role model. she was everything nari ever wanted to be: an artist free to pursue their dreams. although, she knows her aunt goes through many hardships to remain afloat, even that was admiring to nari. her relationship with mirae is incredibly close, probably a little more so than her and her mother's. they prefer meeting up in cafes, parks or art galleries to admire views. since mirae lived around the area, it wasn't difficult to keep in-contact with her throughout life. mirae might be the only person nari depends on wholeheartedly, even in an emotional sense. she was the first person to know of nari's webtoon antics, after all. in mirae's care, nari feels herself returning to the freedom of childhood, so she's thankful to her aunt for being there for her whenever nobody else could.

NAME fukui emiko (27).
R/S best friend and flatmate.
OCCUPATION brand marketing specialist at copines, south korea branch.

emiko and nari first met as new hires at level station company in 2016, fresh out of university. where nari was the trainee under HR, emi was the one under marketing. they mostly found each other whenever the new hires has to have orientations and meetings together, plus being dragged into company dinners with their middle-aged colleagues was a great conversation starter. soon enough, they naturally became closer. it was easy with emi's bubbly and people-oriented character, matching well enough with nari's calm and introverted one. just after a year of work at level station, the girls had figured to move into an apartment together to lessen the hassle. being roommates only deepened their bond as best friends, and they found themselves telling each other everything. with emi, nari could never run out of things to talk about. plus, she was one of the people who could make nari talk endlessly. it was safe to say that the two girls were each others platonic soulmates. in 2019, emi had found another job at copines; a higher paying, more leadership-oriented one that nari urged her to take. while the office was now less of a bright place with no emi, nari loved her best friend and spent time with her in the evenings, ranting about work or the sort.

NAME taiga nam (23).
R/S informal mentee, younger brother figure.
OCCUPATION 3rd year student at robinson international college, yonsei university. intern at level station company.

taiga and nari met through his (successful) application for the level station game design fall internship. in his interview, nari was one of the interviewers from the panel. since then, she hasn't stopped seeing taiga at the office, no matter how hard she tries. although, over time, the two would grow closer as taiga likes to attain guidance from nari whenever he feels that she could contribute. plus, he's too intimidated by seohee and his department head (sometimes) to ask petty questions. nari appreciates that he can go to her for any career concerns, but also just for general creative opinion on his tasks. to nari, taiga is just like a younger brother she has taken under her wing.

NAME han minyoung marie (27).
R/S ex-best friend, family friend, frenemy.
OCCUPATION graphic designer and marketing design specialist at marie's creative studio. freelancer.

once best friends turned very awkward, catty frenemies, minyoung and nari are a pair of high school friends that quickly dissipitated once university started. they met in mapo, their friendship being further supplemented by their mothers' plans of dinners and get-togethers while the two teen girls would babble to each other about their math homework, or some guy from the basketball team. however, when minyoung decided to study abroad to the states in a creative degree, their plans to remain close fell through. slowly, their texts and calls would decline in number, until the only time either of them would hear of the other's name was through their mom's nagging and update texts. nari thinks the jealousy began there. of course, she was always in envy of minyoung's ability to do something she always wanted to do, but back then, she was just happy minyoung was at least fulfilling it and not succumbing like she was. now, whenever her mother invited mrs. han to dinner on holidays, all she could do is clench her fist and mindlessly scroll through her phone, pretending she wasn't hearing their talks of minyoung's creative ventures. perhaps, what maddens her the most is that her parents were all the more ecstatic of them. she wondered if she would be met with the same grin too. as for minyoung, the updates from her mom after hearing of nari's stable seoul life (albeit single) had just caused her to snicker in some odd, dismissive feeling. minyoung didn't want to hear about nari anymore, even if she did stalk her sns profiles ever-so-often. it seemed like nari had never changed since high school; always the good one, compared to her twisted, mean-girl image. after minyoung moved back to korea in 2019, she and nari would meet more often during special occasions that mrs. han and mrs. baek would plan. just like old times. they tend to just ignore each other, or at most, nari would greet her and minyoung would be pissed off by her "nice" exterior.

NAME nam seohee (29).
R/S colleague, close acquaintance.
OCCUPATION assistant manager of the operations team at level station company. mba student at yonsei university.

it's safe to say that just like everyone else, nari looks up to seohee. even though they are on the same level (technically), seohee being older probably plays a role in how she treats her. the two aren't in the same department, but are often seated together for company functions. sometimes, nari even offers to drive seohee home after the late ends of dinners. although they aren't very close on a personal level, nari appreciates the casual friendships she makes at the office.

life direction
currently nari's life position is not really on tangent to what she or her parents imagined it to be. for her, she'd hoped to be free from the irritatingly clingy shackles of her teenage cowardice. for her parents, perhaps at her late twenties, she'd be settled down with a blossoming family life and a successful career. at the moment, nari is just attempting to excel in her day job and keep her webtoon afloat with once a week updates. while nari is indeed ambitious with the things she's interested in, she isn't exactly aiming for a higher-up position. the salary raise may be attractive, but it also means lesser time for her to craft her art.

what ifs there are nights that nari spends sprawled out over the cool cover of her duvet, merely staring at the ceiling with her lips slightly parted in deep thought. the warmed sunset lamp's light emitting on her walls in the dark, she asks herself: what if i just work on webtoon originals? as my dayjob? it would mean giving up a lot of the flexibility in her current schedule, but it also meant not having to juggle two demanding jobs as a human with only one body. plus, after relying on her aunt to keep her passions a little secret, it would feel like a burden had been lifted and maybe, she would even feel proud of nari for her decision. the most difficult part of this what if scenario would be her parents. in nari's eyes, they're still the two brooding adults who safeguarded her too much to the point she couldn't even express resent. she's fearful that they will react how they always did; angered from such a ridiculous idea.

the true possibilities it's not likely that nari quits her dayjob just yet, especially since she values financial security to support her passion—with some measly monetary returns at the moment, and she couldn't be the starving artist trope now too—which is fueled by her position at level station. her occupation and workplace are by no means terrible, she didn't even hate the tasks she always did. the routine did her lifestyle very well too. if not for work, she would be in her room until the afternoon, nari muses. for now, the most possible route would be her coming clean with her online identity once she's gathered the braveness (and considered the right circumstances) for the big reveal to her family, important friends, and whoever is crucial in her life. after that, she might consider doing webtoon originals and sharing the workload with an editor, as well as get consistent payments from webtoon itself.

on a personal note, a lot of nari's fundamental relationships need patching up. first off, some uncomfortable moments must be faced in order for her to move on and try to live her life in true freedom. even as a grown woman, nari can barely communicate her own, real feelings, especially with her parents — an extremely crucial conversation that she may have once she can build enough confidence to do so. bluntly communicating was never much of a norm for her family, but she's thankful her siblings haven't taken the same route as her and remain as brutally (and sometimes hilariously) honest as ever. once she thinks it's right, nari may spark a conversation with her parents about her emotions from childhood up until now. although it won't be an easy chat with immediate results and compassion, a work in progress is better than nothing! nari recognizes that her parents are just a bunch of flawed people too, and that's what will keep her going forward to acceptance and moving on with great strides.

hopefully, her experience with her family can help with improving her friendships and relationships as well. specifically how she carries her negative emotions. nari may be able to communicate her feelings more expressively, through baby steps. at some point, the jealousy between her and minyoung might be addressed to convey some willingness to patch things up. though nari is aware of how stubborn minyoung is, at least she'll try to get this off her chest and dispose of the passive aggressive aura damaging her lifestyle. instead of bottling things up to brew something dangerous, nari might be able to live healthily with her loved ones instead.

interview
HELLO, IT'S NICE TO MEET YOU. NOW, BEFORE WE START, CAN YOU INTRODUCE YOURSELF?
"hello, i'm baek nari, HR assistant manager at level station company." she bows politely after introducing herself, then sits on the chair parallel to the interviewer.

WHAT ARE YOUR CURRENT GOALS  IN LIFE? DO YOU HAVE A LIFE MOTTO OR PRINCIPLE YOU LIVE BY?
"i'm not very good at following my own advice, really." nari chuckles, "but i do give good advice though, to be honest!" she remembers flashes of her friends and her younger siblings, the hours of talking. with a fond smile, she responds. "i tell my brother and sister especially to keep doing what they love, if it isn't hurting anyone. be brave and do it. for now, i want to follow through my own philosophies, too."

WHAT ARE THREE WORDS YOU IMAGINE PEOPLE DESCRIBE YOU AS?
what an anxiety-ridden question, nari muses. she does think of this often, but always in a less-than-optimistic way. not wanting to appear too egotistical nor too pessimistic, nari opts for  carefully treaded answer. "i think people have a general.. trope for me? they think i'm artsy, quiet and dependable."

HOW DO YOU WANT TO BE REMEMBERED LATER IN LIFE?
oh, wow. yet another thought-provoking question. nari loved it on a normal basis, but not when the spotlight was on her. she thought of what being remembered entailed; was it stardom? from her webtoons? would it be reconciliation with her loved ones? maybe healing her inner-self? well, nobody else really needed to know all this conflict. "i think.. i just want to be in good terms with everyone who's in my life, actively. when i pass on, being remembered fondly.. or even with indifference, is better than with anger."

ANY LAST WORDS BEFORE WE END? IT'S BEEN GREAT HAVING YOU.
nari shakes her head, smiling at the interviewer while lifting herself up from the seat. she bows again, "it was great to speak with you, see you soon!"

when in love...
❋ nari has never experienced much of a fruitful romantic life. her dating experiences had never been too serious, and they weren’t exactly what she had pictured in her mind. growing up with fairytales and reading romantic webcomics were not helping with her extremely unrealistic standards of love. when nari is getting into some sort of situation that involves mutual feelings, she’s often very timid and more conscious of herself. she exerts more effort into her appearance and tries to compensate for her bashfulness by strategically speaking confidently and acting in a typically “attractive” manner. at this stage, she just wants to reel in her special someone by charming them with all the best parts of herself on the surface.
❋ as a relationship becomes more established, nari should be able to feel more comfortable to let her guard down after quite some time. she’s not the type to do it very easily, or abruptly spill out her deepest traumas, but a gradual opening. with the right person, nari could be very talkative and ramble endlessly. however, she is prone to second-guessing due to her insecurities. she usually feels as though she’s either talking too much or too less, or she’s boring the person to sleep. of course, nari has a lot of trouble expressing her concerns so her partner’s assurance is appreciated. when she feels familiar with this validating communication, nari can reciprocate to any concerns her partner has.
❋ all throughout the stages of a relationship, nari is very concerned with how her partner sees her. she tries her best to be just as desirable as when they first began seeing each other, always emphasizing how their magic should never fade. it's mostly influenced by her impression of "love" she feels the need to always be one step ahead and have no margin for error because she thinks if she's not a certain way, she won't deserve their love. has only known conditional love, where she believes she wouldn't be as loved if she wasn't trying as hard to meet the expectations of her family or lover.

love languages
her way of loving is through acts of service and gift-giving. this means she’s the type of lover that makes diy gifts in her spare time, such as cards and jars filled with notes and tidbits. keeps sentimental things like polaroids or the receipt from her first date with her partner. scrapbooks are a definite one too. nari’s also a nurturer at heart, so she tries to take care of her partner in the way she wants to also be tended to. however, she prefers being loved through words of affirmation and acts of service as well. letting her know that she's doing well, or random professions of love are what really makes her feel adored. being pampered in simple ways like preparing a meal for her is certainly something she appreciates too.

the ideal type...
nari doesn’t like to admit it, but sometimes she wishes she was the baby friend. always being the responsible one was a fulfilling part of any friendship, but it could get exhausting. she’d most likely appreciate someone who could treat her in such a princess-y, spoiled way that she is definitely not used to. she wants to be taken care of the way she takes care of others. a chivalrous type of person who is just as tender-hearted, but perhaps a bit more assertive and expressive than her. she would prefer someone who could lead a conversation to make her join in comfortably. moreover, nari needs someone who is a lot more bold and willing to take some rebellious or risk-inducing choices, giving nari a taste of how to live for herself. ideally someone of the same age or just a few years older.
