🍉 princess: yoongi calls her this to make fun of her at first, but it eventually becomes his petname for her.
ruby's fashion!
yoongi was onto something when he dubbed chae ruby "princess." when ruby enters the scene it's with a graceful, almost elegant walk. she makes every move look purposeful yet relaxed, even when doing labor in her garden. she's warm-hearted and considerate to strangers and loved-ones alike, though if a stranger turns out to be rude she'll stick her nose up and strut away. rude strangers aside, ruby has an optimistic outlook on life. she chooses to believe that everything will be okay, and will tell herself to be hopeful if things keep going wrong. additionally, ruby is a bit of a perfectionist. this may be a bad trait for someone else, however her optimism helps keep ruby grounded. but you can still expect to see a furrow in her brow, or a frown on her face when things don't go as she planned. ruby has a witty remark at the ready for any occasion, though for her it's mostly just to friends. this goes hand in hand with her sarcasm, however if she isn't careful she may say something unintentionally hurtful.
ruby is and has always been a determined girl, thanks to supportive parents who inspired this trait in her. she has done everything she set out to do. occasionally this determination brings out the worst in her, as ruby can be bossy when working with someone else. she has no reservations telling someone what to do, as she believes she knows best and won't accept anything else. getting her stubborn to change her mind is nearly impossible. (especially when it comes to things that benefit her- see selfish). due to her upbringing ruby has an air of self-importance that can be really off-putting to those around her. she tries not to complain but sometimes she just can't help it when encountering things that are below her standard. ruby loves a little gossip and has a habit of being a little too nosey, sometimes sticking her nose where it doesn't belong just to get the latest island scoop. you can bet she'll be listening to any conversations as she waters her neighbor's flowers.
25 years ago, chae ruby was born to a dairy company ceo and his wife. chae woojae inherited the successful dairy brand from his father, and their company is the 3rd most popular dairy provider in south korea. lee hyewon (ruby's mother) wanted a "simpler" life for her family, so after the birth of ruby the family moved into a farmhouse mansion in the rural part of gwangju, close to the farm that provides for woojae's company. with their riches the loving parents enjoyed spoiling their one and only daughter. unlike her father, ruby had no interest in dairy or business. the young girl practically lived in the mansion garden, following the gardeners around and annoying them to death asking exactly what they're doing and why. she grew up being in love with flowers and was even gifted a small garden of her own to take care of.
as ruby grew older, she became aware that the mansion staff didn't really like her or her family. she was usually polite, albeit a little self-absorbed, but her parents weren't always the nicest to the staff. the housekeepers would whisper to each other about how spoiled ruby is, how she's 25 and still living at home because she can't live without mommy and daddy. this set ruby off. how dare they! i became class president all by myself! i was the most popular girl because i'm like-able, not because of my parents! ignoring the parts where she never had to go to college because she's set for life, or that she's 25 and hasn't really done anything with her life besides gardening. i'll show them! i'm gonna move out all on my own. this is what leads chae ruby to the island and start her new journey. her parents are supportive of her of course, not really believing their daughter can do no wrong. they sent her off with a bunch of seed packets to start a garden and still send ruby some new flower seeds every couple of months.
🍉 ruby’s favorite colors are pastel pink and pastel blue (she especially loves wearing pastel blue clothes).
🍉 unsure if there will be wifi on the island, but if there is, ruby will definitely be watching netflix. she enjoys rewatching old romcoms she's seen already, like a cinderella story for some reason.
🍉 she really enjoys exercising, yoga in particular. she does a yoga routine every morning.
🍉 despite leaving a whole bunch back at home, ruby is a collector of designer clothes and accessories. she still has a good chunk of gucci and ysl because those two are her favorite.
🍉 she talks to her flowers while watering them because she was told as a child it helps make them grow. (the gardener was just having a laugh).
🍉 ruby loves going around and watering the islander's garden for them. (for some reason she thinks that helps them grow faster, too).
🍉 as far as music goes, ruby is a basic pop girlie. western or korean doesn't matter, as long as it popular she'll probably like it.
🍉 she enjoys the museum sometimes, but ruby finds the fossils and aquarium part pretty boring.
🍉 watermelon is a delicacy in her eyes and broccoli is the best vegetable. ruby also enjoys a good cupcake.
🍉 ruby's diet is right in the middle of healthy and unhealthy, thanks to her active lifestyle it doesn't affect her much either way.
🍉 she took flower arranging classes starting in high school and continued for five years, ruby was determined to be the best flower arranger.
🍉 habits: huffing and furrowing her brow when frustrated, forgetting to lock her door when she leaves, forgetting to clean up after herself (no more maids now), constantly losing her lipsticks and chapsticks, singing when a song is stuck in her head even though she's really bad at it.
🍉 fears: her father losing his company, the whole family going broke, losing her determination and will, being hated by everyone around her, the dark, bugs, snakes, horror movies.
🍉 "and so jimin told taehyung that there's someone on the island he's into but before he said who, yoongi threw a cup at me and i swear, i considered homicide for a minute."
🍉 after doing a round of yoga in the morning "ah... my body is a temple." admires her in the mirror.

🍉 walking the museum with taehyung, pointing to a dinosaur skeleton "that's gonna be me if we don't leave within five minutes."
🍉 "♩you want me, i want you baby, my sugarboo, i'm levitating ♫" yoongi, fondness in his eyes: "thanks, my ears are bleeding."
🍉 "stop it, hoseok and i are not dating! no matter how many times he begs me or worships at my feet, i'm not giving in!" seokjin, who's just trying to do a checkup: ???
at first, ruby didn't necessarily dislike myogwi- she seemed nice? enough, but her whole existence being a mystery and her quiet disposition initially turned ruby off. she just couldn't get over how myogwi showed up out of nowhere and refused to explain where she came from, what she was doing that caused her to wash up on shore- unless she was hiding something, why wouldn't myogwi just answer her questions? to be fair, it started to bother ruby so much that she kept asking and asking and MAYBE it was annoying, but ruby didn't think she deserved myogwi's "are you the island police?" retort. at this point in her head, ruby just came up with her own reasons (something along the lines of myo being a criminal on the run) and ignored the other girl whenever they crossed paths, stubbornly flipping her hair if they ever met eyes.
hoseok gathered the two together to apologize, ruby obliged because it was hoseok but in the back of her mind ruby couldn't shake the idea that myo was some sort of fugitive or was here on the run. after a rather volatile garden encounter, in which myo was kind enough to offer to help but ruby ran the show like the girlboss she is, tensions between the two girls was high yet again. this time around, it was myo was avoiding ruby- to be honest, the older girl did feel a little bad about it. over time, as myo began growing closer to taehyung, ruby became increasingly annoyed yet again- what if she is secretly a criminal mastermind, trying to sink her claws into ruby's best friend?! it wasn't jealousy, ruby just convinced herself that her outrageous theories were her way of looking out for her friend, making remarks to tae like, "how can you be okay with not knowing who she is or where she came from!!" this along with ruby's garden being trashed after the gardening incident is why ruby turns her nose up at myo whenever they bump into each other.

the girl makes sure to jot down ruby's answer, only because she had to, probably for advertisement purposes. i see! is there a particular reason you've decided to get away from society? nari makes sure to listen carefully, taking care of her reactions to avoid offending ruby. ruby chuckles softly, a glint in her eye. "i was raised with privileges and was spoiled almost my entire life- i've overheard people say many times that i would never survive on my own." for the first time, the smile nearly falls off of the older girl's face. however, she quickly recovers. "but i want to show them that i can! i want to show myself, too. so what better way than by completely starting fresh on an island?"
ahh, that's totally understandable! finally, what are you expecting of us? "well, actual houses would be nice." ruby snorts, before looking at the younger girl apologetically. "sorry... but i also mean that... how am i supposed to have a cute cottage core house with no house! but other than that, i have trust in you guys to lead the island. if you need someone else to help, though..." ruby trails off, trying to telepathically tell nari that she would love to boss people around.
kay, now smile! nari smiles and whips out a camera seemingly out of nowhere. 3... 2... 1... cheese! it's for your passport! of course her picture comes out great despite being surprised, this is chae ruby we're talking about!

much like taehyung, ruby also met yoongi when she visited the shop to inquire about her flowers. unlike taehyung, ruby was put off by yoongi immediately. he wasn't rude or mean per say, but the man radiated a very grumpy disposition and barely spoke two words to ruby, even though the flowers would most likely be sold under his section. every encounter either had the two barely speaking to each other, or bickering because ruby would poke 'n prod him.
you see, yoongi had heard about chae ryubi already. his distant family spoke of the company they work with and how they're mean, privileged people with a spoiled rotten daughter. his cousin mentioned ruby by name and spoke about rumors her house staff said about her. of course, once she joined the island the news of her arrival spread around fast. of all the rich heiresses in the world, why did that one have to come to this island? yoongi thought. even though ruby didn't seem all that bad at first, he let his preconceived idea of her get in the way.
similarly, ruby didn't indulge in the idea that yoongi could possibly have more to him than what meets the eye. despite the praise taehyung, hoseok, nari and other villagers said about the older shopkeeper, ruby just assumed they were being biased. there's no way this guy isn't a total asshat all the time! yoongi was always annoyed whenever ruby said or didn't something that was particularly prissy. "i had to take care of my trash today, all by myself! it was so icky and heavy." yoongi scoffs. "is there something stuck in your throat, yoongi?" / "i bet you wish there was, princess."
ruby doesn't hesitate to point out when yoongi is looking especially cat-like, calling him "gwumpy wittle cat" which grinds his gears more than anything. "why the long face, yoongi?" / "it's just my face." / "ah, tragic..." *trying to pretend he's not really hot.* if you were to ask them who was at the top of their hit list, the duo would no doubt name each other. so why, after some time, did the vibe... change?
there wasn't a particular event or moment that sparked this change in their dynamic, it sorta just happened. the two got used to each other and maybe kinda sorta looked forward to seeing each other, even if they'd deny it. i'm sure their physical attractiveness played a minor role, but there were other small things too. like when ruby almost slipped and yoongi caught her, muttering under his breath that she needs to be more careful. it was the first time he made her heart race (excluding out of anger).
for yoongi, he remembers taehyung and ruby discussing their favorite art pieces. the look on ruby's face when she described the fisherman and the syren by frederic leighton caused something to stir inside of him, unsure if it was the endearing way she rambled about it or the way her eyes shined whilst doing so. it was... cute. cute causes yoongi to malfunction and reboot. this is evident when ruby does something endearing, like sing horribly with a smile on her face, yoongi can't help but insult her even if he's grinning stupidly too.
yoongi gets a weird feeling when he hears about hoseok and ruby's little fling, a feeling he can't describe at the time (it was jealousy, of course) but he knows that he doesn't like it. "hoseok really spends all that time with you?" / "yes, what about it?" / "i can't see it, hoseok usually has a different type... but whatever." ruby, feeling hurt for the first time since meeting: "well... we're not even dating anyway..." ruby doesn't know why his words had so much of an impact on her. is he implying i'm not good enough? she leaves the shop right away, both of them feeling down in the dumps.
it all comes to a head when ruby decides to take a few days to go visit her parents back at their mansion. trusting one of her new friends to watch her garden, she sets off, not saying a word to yoongi because she's still a little mad at him. of course word travels fast on the island anyway, so yoongi does hear about it and is hurt he didn't get a goodbye. however, this time away is eye opening for the both of them- they both realize they miss each other a lot and maybe kinda sorta have feelings for each other.
as for where their love story continues from here, i would love to leave that in your hands! unless of course you'd like me to plan it out, but otherwise i'd love to be surprised.

final comments: i really do love this idea!! despite the code really doin my head in this was a lot of fun and i'm so so glad you're continuing the story!! i hope you don't mind that i left yoongi's personality and bg unfinsihed for now, it seems like u already have a solid base for him so i figured it could wait so i could turn this in sooner! i'll also be adding some more stuff to ruby's funfacts when i think of them. but i hope u like ruby, and i'm so excited to read the story! <3
