it was a sunday, which to seojun's everyday life means that it's time for him to call his parents—which is the most consistent ritual he does ever since he left simdong.

like always, he set up his phone by the kitchen counter that showcases his own mini stove, a few sets of condiments, pots and pans, and the other ingredients he'll be using to cook up his own dinner. he was not one to call his parents through voice calls, prefering to do it through video calls.

a few rings were all it took before he took sight of his mother, face showing a few wrinkles but still has the same glint in her eyes that he inherited.

"brat," she grumbled. "took you long enough to call."

"didn't i tell you that i can only call during sundays?" he scoffed, pulling out a chopping board and a meat cleaver. "you should be grateful i'm calling in the first place."

"how's university life?"

"great. got to cook some dishes and serve 'em to the professors. they even let us create our own recette unlike some old hag who prefers to stick to the usual," he replied, grabbing a whole chicken and dropped it on the board.

his mother raised an eyebrow at his shade and at the protein infront of her, "the customers are fine with what our menu has to offer, jun. and what the hell are you doing with that chicken?"

"chimaek," he simply answered. he didn't dignified her with a response when she mentioned about their family restaurant's customers, knowing they'll end up in an another feud because of it.

and he really didn't want to cook his chimaek only to eat it in frustration because of his argument with her.

"chimaek," she repeated, as if she couldn't believe her son is cooking something so simple. "i thought you'd wing something up? something magical as you often say?"

"can't i have chicken and beer on a sunday?" he gave her a look, the force he implied on the joint between the body and the wing increased.

she sighed, "fine, do whatever you want."

there was a moment of silence, before seojun asked again. "how's dad?"

"he's.. resting," the solemn look on her face was enough for seojun to know that his dad's fine, but doesn't mean he won't end up hurting again.

"make sure you feed him well, old hag," he muttered.

his mother scoffed, "of course, i do. unlike you who left despite knowing his father's condition."

"you know damn well why i left," he seethed, placing the meat cleaver down to look at his mother. "the restaurant has the potential to become better if we break traditions."

"and traditions are meant to be kept. do you have any idea how many years that menu was passed down from generations to generations? do you think your father would be willing to break that?" she growled.

seojun pursed his lips to a thin line, the atmosphere already turning sour, "i'm hanging up."

"ahn seojun."

"i'll visit you two—only because i'm worried about dad," he glared. "you better make sure the customers are walking out of the restaurant with smiles on their faces. and don't forget to eat either."

"i'm your mother! i'm the one who's supposed to be worried about you-"

he ended the call even before she finished, but seojun already knew what she wants to say. he could only shake his head and laugh softly.

what a mess of a family we are.

FULL NAME ahn seojun
OTHER NAMES
jun his common derivative aside from seojun, most of the residents in simdong calls him this
brat his mother's favorite nickname, because he is indeed her brat of a son
kitchen angel it randomly stuck to him when they witnessed seojun cooking a simple dish that's not even on the menu and offered to one of the random visitors of simdong that arrived hungry and unfortunately, out of money. to seojun, he's not a chef who'll only cook food to those who can pay, but will cook food for those who are hungry

BIRTHDAY aug. 05 (24)
ETHNICITY korean

GENDER cis male

aspiring chef: ahn seojun
APPEARANCE
even young, he's already one of the taller kids at simdong. has toned muscles due to often being asked for help by some people in reaching out stuff or carrying some boxes that consists of vegetables or proteins. his naturally dark brown hair a bit oily due to numerous times of sweating in the kitchen.

STYLE
he prefers to keep things simple—sweatpants and shirts as his casual get-up. he rarely dresses good, unless on special occasions. his chef's uniform on the other hand is always crisp white, thoroughly taken care of because he doesn't have that much money to buy an another uniform (le cordon bleu is such an expensive school, he's just lucky he got in via scholarship).

he is a young man of contradiction. growing up in the ahn household that owns one of simdong's coziest and inviting restaurants, seojun took that certain friendly trait to heart despite how opposite his particular actions are. he's rough around the edges, and treats everyone as his equal, which explains why he doesn't often speak to his customers in a formal way. yet, you could sense that drip of respect and care he has for them whenever he converses with them (still calls those who are older than him with the honorific -ssi). granted, he has a potty mouth that's pretty much like his mother's, and that is always frowned upon by some of the more conservative population of simdong (and would definitely encounter problems if they even welcome visitors that came from the city). nonetheless, it was because of that that the restaurant can handle different types of people residing, arriving and leaving the town. it didn't matter to seojun if they're a different type of family that goes against korean culture when it comes to formality and respect to the elderly, because seojun appreciated the fact that he's different and so is his mother.

he cares about his customers far more than anyone could give him credit for, even goes as far as cooking a simple meal for the hungry even if he knows that they can't pay him or the restaurant back for it. it's something his mother often scolds, but his father understands his way of thinking—"eating isn't a privilege, it's a right" he often tells his mother (that goes without saying that it only applies to the ones who really can't afford to eat). he's calm in the kitchen, moves wtih ease yet is quite boisterous when he interacts with others. in a sense, it adds to the warm ambiance the restaurant has that tends to draw everyone and ends up coming back because of it. it gives them a sense of being included, often chatting with the customers with no hint of boundaries or walls between chef and customer. he has his own beliefs and is firm to stick to it no matter what others think, which is why he's always in conflicts with his mother (and some others) because of that. he obviously inherited his mother's rumbustious personality, and they both are headstrong people that'll fight their way to what they believe in.

he often has a short-temper with anything related to food or cooking, having patience thinner than anyone else. he has that sort of arrogance he carries even when he left simdong because he knows he can cook; he has the talent for it. he is no judger when it comes to first impressions and the personality of a person in general, but he can be a bit condescending to some chefs when he sees a dish that he's aware it has the potential to be better if he's the one doing it, which he sadly developed when he moved to the city.
cooking is meant to be a dynamic thing
seojun is the only child of the infamous ahn family in simdong, known to owning one of the town's favorite restaurants. he grew up surrounded with food, with parents that are both excellent and warmhearted chefs that it's only inevitable that he, too, would become one. and to seojun's admittance, he does love what he's family's doing. he enjoys everyone's company at the restaurant, albeit a little bit too daring and rowdy to everyone's liking. although that is to be expected since his mother is just the same, but all the more mature and already having motherly traits so it was a bit toned down now with the expectations that she's apparently the only one who can handle seojun's firecracking personality.

even at the young age of 5, seojun can already be seen running around in the kitchen; giving assistance by chopping vegetables then proteins. and before long, he's already a working chef with a talented mind and a gifted palette. he often interacts with every business in simdong, especially with the farmers and the fishermen as he knows the wonderful feeling of creating such masterpieces using simdong's own produce and proteins. that went along for 15 years, until when he's 21 that seojun grew to realize that the restaurant's remaining stagnant.

he's well-aware that the customers enjoy their food despite not being offered a new menu every season. the town's favorites, "soondubu jjigae" and "catch of the day" are still the favorites and are often ordered by everyone. he's also well-knowledgable of how this certain menu was passed down to generations, to his father, and now to him. but, to his eyes, cooking is meant to be a dynamic thing. something that always has the potential to grow, to serve something better, and he knows that their restaurant can become better if they have seasonal menus. it's not like seojun wanted to permanently replace the menu they have now, anyway, so what's wrong with breaking the lifelong tradition?

apparently, there are a whole lot of wrongs to it. their restaurant was already known for the menu they have, and to his parents' own interests, there's no need for a change. there's no need for a competition either (something his father thinks is one of the reasons why seojun even proposed such a thing), yet it's really not what seojun wants to point out. it irked seojun to the bones, feeling quite pathetic that his own family won't step forward with him with the dream of making their family restaurant the best there is—not to anyone's opinions but to their own. to seojun's.

the heat between them got a bit worse when his father was diagnosed with a collapsed intervertebral disc, though thankfully not severe enough to need surgery but serious enough that he has to undergo physical therapy. despite that however, even to seojun's own dismay because he is in fact, worried of his father's condition, he still decided to leave simdong and move to the city to have a change of scenery. he has no culinary education, so he thought that it'll help further convince his parents if he has more knowledge about korean cuisine and culinary in general. people at simdong grew disappointed at seojun's decision to leave even with the knowledge that his father's health is at risk, but seojun couldn't bear to stay in town knowing that he could do something that could potentially convince his parents to change.

moving in to the city, seojun quickly realized how different city life is as compared to the town he previously lived in. at night he heard crickets and the sound of the sea hitting the sand yet here all he could ever hear are the sounds of car engines, busy streets, and the music blasting outside of the nightclubs. it was a culture shock, to say the least, and it took a while for seojun to adapt. however, he acclimatized perfectly because of the new introduction to korean cuisine. the dishes that he could only see at the internet are finally infront of him, and even if he himself tried cooking them on his own, it was nothing compared to the authentic dishes the city has can offer.

when he entered culinary school, he was different considering that he's already 21 when he entered whilst the rest of students are 19-20. he knows he was late, but it never bothered him the slightest, the only thing on his mind is to drink in the information and teachings the school would give him in high hopes that when he officially moves back to simdong, he can finally ask his parents to step forward and welcome the change.
scroll right.
for the majority of his stay in the city, it often circulates on a particular schedule that consists of him waking up, cooking breakfast, attending his classes, get back at his cheap apartment, cooking dinner, doing homeworks if there are any, sleep, then repeating the cycle. but that often happens on a weekdays since he has classes to attend to. he doesn't have time to socialize either, even if he's the type of person who loves to interact with people especially with a plate of food in between them, but education is a serious thing he majorly focuses on and he has no time for distractions.

during his free time though, he takes the liberty to explore the city and visit restaurants (all that his money can afford) and taste different dishes. working all these years in the family restaurant, he managed to earn a good amount of savings from getting his paychecks so he managed to put it to good use for his education and living expenses. however, he knew he only had a limited amount in his bank account so he applied for a part-time job in a local street diner near his apartment. it's something worth doing, being able to talk to the customers and even ask them about the norms in the city, being able to adjust because of that. the kitchen he's working for loves him as well, though it was rough at first due to his peculiar personality.

despite being known for breaking traditions, there's one that he's consistent about: video calls with the parentals. it's always on sundays, and it's his way of checking up with them, especially his dad, and the family restaurant as well. he does have intentions of going back, only living in city temporarily until he graduates.

— everyone at school knows him as the student who calls the teachers seonsaengnim but converses informally
— rarely orders take-outs since he prefers to cook on his own (serving it as a practice for him as well)
— he has his own kitchen knives kit from simdong that he brought to the city with him
— he only rented a cheap apartment since he's not particularly picky with it as long as it's santized, has a bed, and room big enough for him to cook
— loves to use simdong's own produce and proteins, would have second thoughts in using imported ones
— he and his mother dotes on his father alot since he's a softspoken fellow, quite opposite to his mother

dad (55) & old hag (54)
his parents is an odd bunch in such a way that his dad is a softie whilst his mom is an intimidating woman. he loves them both dearly, although it doesn't show as much with his mother because of their similarities. both soft for his dad/her husband, has a potty mouth, a wild personality, and calls each other names, it sometimes gets too overwhelming to watch for the customers but at the same time very entertaining as well.

he often calls his mother an old hag whilst she calls him a brat, then he calls his father dad just because. he has high respects for the two of them since they're the ones who introduced him to the world of culinary, which is why he really doesn't want to let them down. he knows that they love the restaurant (it's even the reason why his parents met each other in the first place), and it's because of that that he genuinely wants to make it better despite how they don't see each other eye-to-eye.

nonetheless, despite the tension between them (particularly him and his mother), seojun would never deny how close he is to his parents. he thinks highly of them, and would even have that fond and proud look whenever he talks about them with his co-chefs in the local restaurant he currently works in.

im yugyeong (22)
he and yugyeong are... not on best terms ever since seojun announced that he wants to change the traditional menu of the family restaurant. as someone who prefers to stick to the usual ways, she doesn't agree with how he wants to keep the menu as dynamic as possible without a sense of regard to his own family's traditional menu (that, again, is passed down from generations to generations).

before that incident though, they're comfortable around each other. seojun couldn't put a label to their friendship, whether they're close friends, acquaintances, or anything as such—but they're friends. seojun doesn't ask anything about her father nor does he believe nor listen to the rumors since he only wants to have a chat with her and the teas the shop can offer (since his mother's a tea fanatic and he ends up being a local buyer).

when they met again at simdong, well, there's no improvement to their relationship really. yugyeong became even more stubborn and stricter to her love for traditions and he too, is still stubborn in wanting to change the menu of the restaurant.

COMMENTS
— ngl i'm honestly scared that there would be confusion in the background and contradiction in the personality ;;
— i know korean's known for their strict tradition when it comes to respect for the elderly and some specific traditions, but i want to create seojun in such a way that he's different. he and his mother are like a black sheep amongst the white, but they treat their customers with respect
— also in a way, seojun just calls them with the honorific -ssi but other than that, he converses with them in an informal manner
— also, i'm sorry if the drabble got too long, i really wanna show the relationship he has with his mom that despite how it has tension, they still care about each other
— uHM,, i really didn't specify anything about the menu because i think it's better to leave it to you?? but basically whatever menu you initially thought, then that's the menu the generations had passed down :>
— jaehyun is fc while kino is backup!
— i hope there aren't too many mistakes, and if there are, i wanna apologize in advance T___T
