Happy New Year! | Top 10 Songs of 2020

Happy New Year!

Is everyone okay? I feel like I have to ask this after the storm that 2020 was. Oh my God, was this year long and very weird. I just couldn't believe that so many things could happen in a year and I am glad it was over and I got past it safely – minus several mental breakdowns.

Despite how bad this year generally was, I have to say that it was a really good year for music. Tons of strong comebacks, awesome debuts, unique concepts, and very good albums overall. Being quarantined I had time to focus more on the music and honestly discovered hidden gems that I just overlooked in the past years.

K-pop is evolving rapidly and honestly becoming a strong music genre with amazing artists representing it. I’m doing this top for several years already and I have to say this year was the hardest for me to figure out.

So, without further ado, it’s time for my top 10 K-POP songs of 2020.

Honorable Mentions:

  • Blackpink – The Album. We waited for an album from these girls for eons and they did not disappoint. Though the past singles were lacking –in my opinion, don’t throw bricks please- this album was the bomb. The album showcased their talents in so many ways and it was truly a very nice surprise. I hope they’ll continue making high-quality music in the future.
  • Demian. I discovered this vocalist because of my best friend who fell in love with his style and voice. He’s a hidden gem of the Korean industry and I hope people will stop sleeping on him.
  • Road to Kingdom. The amazing boy groups that graced out screens. If you didn’t watch this amazing show, you should definitely check it out. It brought forward underrated boy groups who showcased their talent in a truly spectacular way. I lived for this show and the amazing songs the guys remixed and produced. I’m not going to spoil the show for you, but you have to watch it! Also, there’s season two coming and it’s going to be fire! Below, a performance from the show.

  • Good Girl. Whoever came with the idea to combine vocal powerhouses with amazing dancers and talented rappers in an all-girl reality survival show deserves a raise. The result is a competition that left my mouth agape. These girls rock, you have to watch the show. Below, one of the best songs from the competiton perfromed by the lovelies Cheetah, Yeeun (CLC), Jiwoo (Kard), Jamie, Hyoyeon (Girls Generation).

Top 10 :

10. Victon – Mayday.

Mayday, mayday, my imaginary ovaries are exploding. The vibe, the sultry music style, the vocals, and rap – this song deserves so much more and is terribly underrated. I also have to mention the skillful choreography –those body rolls left me sweating. These guys deserve way more and this whole concept proves just how talented and versatile they are. Also, they’re making a comeback real soon so hold on to your wigs cuz they’re gonna snatch them. Stan Victon! –also, Hanse slays. God damn u y rapper.

9. Pentagon – Dr. Bebe.

Guys, I am sick, I need a doctor or better yet 9 of them. Since their participation in ‘Road to Kingdom,’ I started giving the boys more attention and this song crushed me and the little innocence I had left. They have to be one of the most versatile groups out there and this song proves it. They do y-dark concepts so well and left me dazzled, amazed, and star-struck. This a bop and more people should join their fandom. Come to the dark side, we have Hongseok in a crop top.

8. IZ*ONE - Secret Story of the Swan.

This song was a surprise even for me because I usually don’t go after cute concepts of girl groups. I liked the song from the first time I heard it, it appealed to me and I just couldn’t stop listening to it –and dancing badly every time. I haven’t done much research on the group but they’re definitely very talented and have very nice songs. I love the rhythm of the song and I just can’t stop listening to it and dance –again, badly. Keep up the good work girls!

7. Monsta X – Love Killa.

Imma slay, Imma chill, Imma kill. Do they ever disappoint? I don’t think so. I dare you to name a bad Monsta X song, you can’t! God damn it, they always come up with very intense concepts and this was no exception. The whole mood of the song is y and naughty, just how the guys look in those suits –Yummy! I can’t believe they’re still underrated and people sleep on them when they come up with great songs every year. These 6 –but 7 in our hearts- talented dudes are causing me to sin. Marry me Minhyuk!

6. Twice – I can’t stop me.

I can’t stop me from dancing and singing– very badly- to this amazing song. Is there a year without a Twice bop? Say what you want but these girls are one of the best girl groups in the entire Korean Industry. The rhythm, the voices, the cute rap, this song has everything. I don’t get why they’re getting so much hate, but I guess that envy is big these days. I love their whimsical concepts, their very well produced songs, and the way they’re showcasing each of the girls’ talent. Don’t get me started on how gorgeous they are or how much work they put into their dances and songs. Stream Twice for a better life.

5. Oneus – To Be or Not To Be.

That is the question, indeed. These six loveable and talented guys need more attention and this song showcases their amazing skills. I got to know them better during the ‘Road to Kingdom’ competition and I have to say they are very artistic and such hard workers! I find their concepts unique and I hope they’ll do more dark concepts in the future because this look of fighting vampires had me screaming at the screen. Oh, how I wish for vampire Ravn to come and visit me; I’ll even learn Shakespeare for him. Overall, please check them out because they need support –and they’re making a comeback very soon so stan Oneus!

4. Woodz – Love me harder.

How hard do you want me to love you, Mr. Woods? Beware, I am very passionate. *wink wink*. tiness aside, I have to say that this soloist does things to me that no other soloist does. He can sing angelically, he can rap flawlessly and he can dance marvelously; and I bet he can love very passionately- and don’t get me started on his looks, he is gorgeous. You’ll have to excuse me, I am a very big fan of this man and the music he sings. I am glad he got a bit of recognition this year because he totally deserves all the love. You should definitely check out his albums –yes, he released a lot of songs this year so please stream Woodz. Love him harder!

3. Ateez – Thankxx.

Grrrrracias Ateez for such a great song. Is anyone surprised that these guys are slaying? They’re very talented and should be appreciated even more. This song is so my style, it has this oriental feel to it and the vocals of these y angels are doing it justice. The flawless rap and the stunning voices make me want to be there with the guys, dancing on that school bus. Ateez is definitely ready for world domination! –and I’ll gladly worship San and grant his every wish. Also, they’re going to be on the next season of ‘Road to Kingdom’ so the next time you’ll see me, I’ll be drooling even more.

2. NCT U – Make a wish.

Can I rub their lamp to get their wish? Or at least their bellies? No? Okay *sad face*. Aladdin sure looks different this year but who the hell is complaining? Omg, 2020 was definitely the year of NCT and this song proves just how good and versatile they are. There was no doubt about their talent whatsoever, but they completely brought it to another level and I love it. I have several wishes in mind when it comes to them –most of them rated – and one of them is to swing from that chandelier as Taeyong does. Though probably this is not a good idea since no chandelier can hold my weight –even if it belongs to Aladdin. In all seriousness, NCT –and all the subunits ever- is a great group and a true blessing to this K-POP world. Oh, did I mention this song has an English version which is pure...art? check it out!

1. Stray Kids – God’s Menu.

What’s better than food? A song about food. Well, this is no ordinary song about an ordinary menu; this is a masterpiece about God’s menu. Can I have a serving? I’ll them all! Stray Kids rock!!! I loved this song from the moment I heard it; it’s been on my playlist from day one. What’s better than a cooking concept? A cooking concept with added Hazmat suits! These guys are geniuses and they’re summing up 2020 so well. I admit I slept on them for way too long but they totally have my heart now. Also, don’t get me started on the one and only Lee Felix. God damn you kiddo! Where did you get your voice? Hades himself? The things your voice does to me are indescribable. I am in love with that deep voice of his. Stan Stray Kids because they’re a bunch of really talented guys. I can’t wait to see them on the new season of ‘Road to Kingdom’; I’ll be on the floor, drooling the entire time.
