— byun doyoon, 15, deaf. like a brand that won't come off, doyoon went through highschool being known as the one who's deaf. it wasn't a nice brand, it never was in the first place, but doyoon wasn't the one who chose to live his life being called deaf.
— being looked upon as if he's an outcast, as if he's some unknown creature they could never understand, doyoon learned it the hard way how cruel life truly is.
— throughout highschool, he persevered. he grew up to have a short temper out of suffering as a victim, and while he could never hear what they're saying, he learned to read their lips and understand them.

— after graduating junior highschool, they relocated. his parents knew what doyoon had been going through, and he knew that they were trying their best to stop the bullying by talking to his counselor, but nothing can.
— living away from the city would benefit him. he would only meet strangers, those who don't know his situation. and while living in such a small town can spread gossips like wildfires, he believed that nobody would care about it.
— doyoon chose to study at hongsam university—applying for the culinary program. making pastries had been his way to escape the harsh beatings reality had offered for those years in highschool, and doyoon thinks that this is his passion.

— graduating with flying colors, doyoon officially became an adult with a bachelor degree in culinary, specializing in pastries. he had wanted to get a job immediately, and looking for one in this small town isn't a problem at all considering how accepting the people are to him despite being deaf.
— by that time, he had set his eyes on applying in yeonjoo's business, aiming to be a chef and hopefully make her agree to appoint him as a pastry chef. he liked having meals in the hwangs bed and breakfast, likes how cozy and warm it is to the poijt that he often studies there.
— when he applied, he was thankful that yeonjoo accepted him in a heartbeat, without even questioning how difficult the situation might be because of his hearing impairpment.

CURRENT LIFE
while yeonjoo prefered to have doyoon work on shifts, he, himself, insisted to work full-time. he had no other hobby than cooking, whether it be pastry or food in general, and so he works day and night in the kitchen. just like yeonjoo, both of them are night owls and are often the two who leaves b&b last. despite the lack of sleep though, doyoon never gets late to work.
during his free time, he's either working on a new receipe that he could suggest to yeonjoo whenever they try to change the menu for a few occassions, sometimes due to the holidays, or he hangs out with jungkook in his art studio. his own world only revolves around cooking, so he does that often and would never leave the kitchen unless he has to.
most of the receipes he worked on are pastries, but he sometimes offer meal receipe either for breakfast, lunch, or dinner. he also bakes at his home to give it to his parents, and even brings to work to share with everyone.
STRUGGLES
working in a kitchen where it's often noisy and needs verbal communication had been a problem for doyoon. he can read lips, but he can't have the privelage to look at who's talking to him while cooking—so there are times when yeonjoo has to tap or shake doyoon just for him to stop what he's doing and focus on what she instructs him to do.
they tried to opt for giving doyoon his own work station where he can cook at his own pace, but that proves to be difficult since there are some dishes that requires more than one chef to cook. he needs physical contact to signal him whether they're done with the task just so doyoon can move in action as well.
outside the kitchen, however, was nothing compared to what he has to struggle inside. he doesn't have a problem communicating since he's reading their lips more often than not (or use sign language if the person he's talking to knows how to do it). he had his moments when he didn't realize that his voice is too loud for the setting (ex. the library), but other than that, he can manage to control the tone and loudness of his voice.

taeil, doyoon's childhood friend and the person who's been with him throughout his suffering during his highschool life other than his parents. they were neighbors and taeil's the one babysitting him when they are still little (since both of doyoon's parents are office workers). being 2 years older, taeil treats him like a little brother and vice versa. though doyoon had a tiny crush on him when he was 12, but soon died down after the accident. the brotherly affection taeil showers him is something doyoon thought is too good to be true, but he apppreciates it nonetheless. when he moved to hongsan, taeil visits them occasionally or whenever both are not too busy. he's also the first person doyoon opened up to about his crush on jungkook.

yeonjoo's the closest friend doyoon can ever get when he moved to hongsan. the time they spent together in the kitchen as co-chefs are precious and memorable. he truly treasures yeonjoo, despite her having the stronger attitude, they understand each other. yeonjoo even went as far as learning a little of sign language in order to communicate with doyoon better. it might not be obvious because of the way they often bicker at each other, but they really do care.

there were no words needed to be exchanged when doyoon first met kangsan. just a simple look at the older's scarred eye was enough for him to understand that he must have gone through a lot to get that kind of physical memory that would always remind him of what had happened to him just like how doyoon is often reminded of how silent his world is now, no matter how lively it looks. for some reason, the both of them took comfort at how much they can relate to each other, one sense less and all that, plus their personalities doesn't have that much big of a difference. in fact, kangsan seems to be one of the few people doyoon can open up to (apart from jungkook and taeil).

meeting kangmin was like meeting seunggyu, in such a a way that kangmin's bubbly personality somehow gave much more color to his life. unlike seunggyu though, he lets kangmin hang around the kitchen because he knew he can trust him to not break anything (seunggyu: you're mean, hyung!). there were nights when kangmin would hang out with doyoon and yeonjoo at night as one of their taste tasters, even if kangmin knew that jungkook's opinion is like the overall decision if doyoon would push through with the dessert he made or not, and he appreciated that.
those nights where kangmin would unconciously tell doyoon stories about his hyung, and how doyoon would watch him talk attentively, he always feel a lot better when he lets it out. even if they're just the same age, the maturity doyoon gives is enough for kangmin to treat him like a hyung—somehow. and doyoon doesn't mind about that at all.

CHAPTER I
eating breakfast at b&b became a routine for jungkook. he'll always order for 2 pancakes with fresh strawberries and whipped cream, to the point that his order is immediately sent out to the kitchen the moment he walks in at 8 in the morning.
just like how it's a routine for him, a part of it is him looking forward to seeing the pastry chef that in his absolutely honest opinion, serve the best pancakes in town. he's not exactly sure how things work in b&b, he had only been staying in hongsan for a few months, but that certain pastry chef would always be the one serving his own pastries despite how there are waiters serving the food.
the first time he ordered, the pastry chef only smiled at him as he placed the 2 plates on his table. he remembered how awfully attractive his smile was, and how especially cute his eyes are behind the gold-rimmed specs of his. his chef uniform is surprisingly crisp and white, and his slightly wavy hair's been hiding under the chef's hat. he returned back to his apartment, stomach full with a take-out of butterflies.
the next time he served, it was still a smile. and then the next. then the next. until he shyly asked,
"what's your name?"
CHAPTER II
being ignored wasn't something he expected. he only asked the question when the chef turned his back on him to start walking back in the kitchen, but surely he must have heard. or, did he actually heard him?
jungkook, though hiding both his embarassment and disappointment for not being able to catch his name, asked one of the waiters.
"excuse me, who's the chef who keeps on serving the pastries?"
"oh, you mean chef doyoon?"
"that's his name?"
"yup. though you have to make sure he looks at you just so you can continue a conversation with him."
that was not enough to satisfy his curiousity about the chef. but nonetheless, he ate his food and left.
going back for lunch or dinner was a bit more rare compared to breakfast, but he still did just so he can watch for doyoon serving his pastries. he did tried asking for his name, but that in itself proved to be difficult and is already mentally exhausting for him. he's really not the type to approach people he doesn't even know just for the sake of becoming acquaintances or friends, and so he's not continuing that plan to talk to him.
CHAPTER III
it has finally becoming a routine for jungkook to bring his sketchbook to b&b and draw doyoon while he works in and out of the kitchen. as creepy as it sounds, he has no ill intention to it. he just simply finds him too beautiful not to draw.
as usual, he ordered for the exact same pancakes. and just like any other day during these past months, doyoon's still the one serving them. jungkook was just stupid and careless enough to not realize that he hasn't closed his sketchbook, revealing silhouettes, faces, and figures of doyoon for the muse himself to see.
"i-i'm sorry if i drew you without your permission."
jungkook was stuttering, blushing rather profusely and feeling so embarrassed by it.
"can you look at me when you talk? i couldn't read your lips."
his voice is melodic to jungkook's ears. as if the clouds in the heavens parted and angels started to sing. he didn't even realized what doyoon had said until a few seconds later.
"pardon?"
he looked up at him, doe-like eyes gazing doyoon's almond-shaped ones. the smile is there on the chef's face.
"now i can read your lips. can you repeat what you just said earlier?"
jungkook was confused, "you're reading my lips?"
"i'm deaf."
that explains why he ignored his question yesterday. he chose not to react to that statement and nodded—looking straight at him despite the red flush creeping on his cheeks.
"sorry if i drew you without permission."
"i never experienced being an artist's muse. it feels nice—creepy because you did draw me without asking, but still, an odd yet fresh feeling."
"can you?" jungkook asked out of the blue. "would you like to be my muse for my art exhibit?"
doyoon stared at him for a few seconds before grinning, "let's get to know each other first before i answer that."
CHAPTER IV
"you've got to be kidding me." taeil signed the same time he's talking to him.
"what? is it bad to befriend someone?"
"someone who just drew you? of course not."
even without doyoon hearing that, he could feel the hint of sarcasm on the older's face.
"look, hyung, i'm just going to meet him this weekend. if he's weird, i'm just going to straight off tell him that and leave."
"yeah because somehow you thought that being blunt is the best weapon of choice to make people to stop talking to you," taeil rolled his eyes.
and that is exactly what doyoon had planned the moment he entered b&b in his casual clothes. it was rather odd for him to do so, given how he works here 24/7, but yeonjoo saw that as an oppotunity for him to take a break—even if she added "that kid better be good to you" "joo, i think you're the same age as him" "my brain's older than his so it up".
doyoon, for once, appreciated jungkook's reaction when he told he's deaf so casually. maybe that's the reason why he's interested in the first place. people often wear pity on their faces when he mentioned his disability, yet jungkook acted like it's a normal thing and still talked to him like any decent person would do.
plus, he's cute. it's not bad to befriend someone like him. it's obvious that the artist has a hard time talking to people and be acquaintanced with them.
"thanks for agreeing to this," jungkook said, looking at him with a bunny smile that doyoon thought is too cute to miss.
"i'm giving you the benefit of the doubt, i think you're not just some creep."
"that's... one way to describe someone drawing you without you knowing," jungkook muttered and doyoon laughed.
"so, favorite color?"
CHAPTER V
two months had passed, and their relationship is steadily becoming much more closer. jungkook learned about doyoon's accident and his predicament, whilst the other learned why he's in hongsan in the first place. jungkook opted to learn sign language to make it much more easier for them to communicate, which doyoon appreciates wholeheartedly.
it was when jungkook was hanging out doyoon at a cafe (surprisingly not at b&b) that he realized he's jealous of doyoon's relationship with taeil. and that was also the moment when he realized that he liked the older more than he bargained himself for. frankly, jungkook had never met taeil face to face. he only hear stories of him from doyoon—how awesome he is, how caring and a great hyung doyoon never asked for, and jungkook's pretty sure the older mentioned that taeil's handsome too (that didn't helped lessening the fuel inside him).
how he had come to like doyoon, it was absolute mystery to jungkook. or more like, a surprise? staying in hongsan temporarily, he never really thought that he'll meet someone he'll be attracted to. his last crush was like what—years ago? his last relationship was also a few years ago. he never had the intention to look for another, let alone liking someone.
doyoon was a force to be reckoned with in jungkook's life. the only unknown in his own consistent lifestyle. and god he wanted him to be a part of it.
so when taeil appeared by the entrance of the cafe and saw the bright smile on doyoon's face, jungkook thought that he wanted doyoon to smile at him like that too.

hello, i'm byun doyoon. 24 years old and from seoul.
if you're new to the island, what brought you to hongsan? if you're a resident, how has it been like living here?
i... kind of have a personal issue back at seoul during my highschool years. i suppose you already know my impairment; and yes, that's the cause—so me and my parents decided to move here for the new environment and people.
what is one thing you wish you could run away from in life?
my bullies for one but that's already done. second is.. well, it's not that i want to run away from it but i wish i would be given a chance to hear again. though.... that's quite impossible.
what do you think about when you hear the word, "family"?
warmth. secure. assurance. trust. basically people you love and rely on the most.
everyone has their bad days and personal struggles. when you run into a problem, how do you handle it?
i face it head on. if i can solve it, i will solve it. if i can't, then maybe that's the cue for me to leave.
what's something you hope to gain as you continue to live your life here in hongsan?
people treating me the same way a normal person should. i'm sick of being pitied on. it's not like i can't do anything just because i can't hear anymore. i just want to have a normal life again and work as a normal and functional citizen.
