I have a strong feeling that choosing your Kami-oshi says something about you as a person. So far, I have observed a common factor of the people I interact with in this fandom, and I can't help but interconnect it with their choice in Kami-Oshi.

Generally, I have observed that fangirls and fanboys have a different way of choosing their Kami-Oshi. Well, these are just my personal objective observations based on a handful of experience with interacting with co-fans.

For the most part, I feel like boys choose their oshis based initially on physical appearance, then with attitude towards them (actual interaction). This, I believe is a direct and/or unconscious preference based on what they want for a significant other. Either they would want their future girlfriends to be the same or--here is where my personal opinion on generally, fanboys are problematic mainly roots--they want their oshis to be their girlfriend in the future ಠಿ_ಠ. Another reason, as observed, may be that fanboys want an untouchable girl as a perfect idol. I personally have heard a lot of fanboys committing oshihen (mostly because they tend to announce). I think, oshihen for boys is common if an idol gets involved in a "scandal".

Fangirls, on the other hand, generally take time before they "admit" who their kami-oshi is. Most of them would like to observe and watch the girls before picking. Their preference is based on an idol's personality. They choose an idol who they most relate to or aspire to be in the future. Again, as observed, oshihen for girls happens when they feel unconnected with their idols.

Of course these are just merely my observations and for sure there'd ought to be some bias as my interaction with the whole fandom is limited and of course, I myself are included in a particular fandom.
