At first, Bi Yao was a shy person and a real big loner because of what her neighbourhood in Shanghai labelled her as a cursed child which then affect her mother’s point of view on her own daughter. Her trust issues started when her mother verbally and emotionally abused her when she saw her as a cursed child. So that was how she became cautious of people. But after meeting and becoming friends with an extrovert their traits kinda rubbed off on her and that is how she became known as a social introvert. (A/N: I know its such a paradox. But I just realised a few days ago that this is me. More about it here: 1, 2) She like doing social activities it’s just her social battery isn’t as big or as long-lasting as an extrovert. She gets most of her energy by being by herself and then herself in pretty much any social gathering and has fun while her energy last which isn’t that long. Even though she’s shy and cautious growing up she is now trying to break out of her shell and putting herself out there which has paid off when it came to networking while at uni and that was how she landed to get a part-time job in admin. Even though she’s made many improvements she is still an introvert and is seen as kinda moody interact with people such as her work colleagues in an animated way, particularly when she is passionate about the subject matter. However, she’ll suddenly change, either disappearing or becoming withdrawn, usually because she’s had enough and needs to focus or recharge. She’s very creative, the type of person that would think of the most unique ways of solving problems. Even though it takes a while for her to get up in the morning and fully wake up for the day her optimism would take over and would look forward to what the new day would bring her.

BACKGROUND : Chen Bi Yao was born in Shanghai, China on the 20th of March 1997. Her father is Chen Pei Zhi land her mother is Li Xiu Ying and is the only child. They lived as a happy family. But people considered Bi Yao odd since she had this odd “aura” around her. Since the neighbourhood she lived in was very spiritual she was an odd child. It wasn’t until she started talking that she was seen by neighbours talking to herself or thin air that she was known as a cursed child. Her parents would defend her but would also tell her that what she is doing wasn’t normal. Her parents aren’t big believers in the supernatural they just wanted to live in peace without people talking behind their backs. Bi Yao’s father is a businessman and would spend most of the time working so he wasn’t home a whole lot. He would rather spend time at home with his daughter teaching her and watching her grow but he knows that he must do his job so their family can survive. When Bi Yao was 7 years old the whole family was at the beach. Bi Yao was with her mother in the water while her father went to get ice cream. Suddenly the waves started to pick up and she was separated from her mother and carried off by the waves. When her father came back and saw his wife panicking while searching for their daughter, he yelled for the lifeguards that she was missing, and everyone tried to search for Bi Yao. A few hours later she was lying on the other side of the beach. She coughed up seawater and was opening her eyes. In the hazy view from being unconscious, she saw what looked like a dragon flying back into the sky in the direction of the ocean. When she was found and given to her parents and told them that she saw a dragon her parents just dismissed it and after she was checked by the first aid team the family went home.

Over the years her parent’s relationship turned sour. It was mainly about how her father was never around and does everything. Plus, what her mother has been hearing for years about how her daughter is cursed was getting to her. She started seeing her daughter as the cursed child that the neighbourhood describes. The fights would get worse and worse and the poor girl would hear it in her room feeling helpless. She learned how to play the erhu at school, and it was around theses time where the instrument would give her comfort as her parents fought on the other side of the house. It was around when Bi Yao was 12 years old that her father found out her mother was having an affair, and which was the breaking point for him. That night when he sent Bi Yao to her room so he could confront his wife the spiritual whispers that Bi Yao heard ever since she was little were so loud in her room that she covered her ears to block it out as well as her parents fighting. It wasn’t until she yelled as tears were streaming down her face “Stop it! LEAVE ME ALONE!” that the spiritual whispers disappeared. It was actually gone, the only thing that she could hear was her parents still fighting but she was so exhausted that she just ended up falling asleep. After a few weeks both her parents finally got a divorce and her father gained custody since her mother didn’t even fight for it which hurt Bi Yao when she found out. After the whole divorce was finally over her father decided that they would move back to his old hometown in Kunming, Yunnan, China. Which Bi Yao agreed with since she just wanted to move to a new environment where no one knows her and start fresh. By the time they moved everything over to Kunming and settled it was just in time for her to start 8th grade. In her first class, she met a girl named Feng Mian. Play began talking and who became best of friends. She continues to play the erhu and was introduced to anime by Feng Mian. They obsessed over anime together throughout high school. She was surprised that she didn't hear those spiritual whispers again.

Once she got to University, she's decided to do a business degree and was happy that Feng Mian was able to attend the same University as her. Near the end of her first year, she moved out of home into a boarding house owned by Bai Yu and has been living there since. Moving there she was a bit more reserved from her other housemates since didn't connect with them. She did, however, talk to Miss Bai Yu occasionally because she is like an aunt she never had. While at uni, Feng Mian and her would still obsessed over anime together and cosplay to go to anime conventions together. During this time Bi Yao found Mo Dao Zu Shi and fell in love with it as well as the other web novels written by Mo Xiang Tong Xiu. She was totally obsessed. During the middle of her second year, she got a part-time job as an administrative assistant at a pretty big finance company and there the CEO’s son who is a well-known playboy has set his sights on Bi Yao but she shoots down all of his advances. She’s still able to see spirits and deities but she acts like she doesn’t notice them like every other mortal. This has allowed her to live her life peacefully so far.

the interview

question : how long have you been living at bai yun's boarding house? and why are you living there?

— I’ve been living in Bai Yu’s boarding house for about three years, give or take about a month. There are three reasons why I moved here; firstly, it’s close to uni and work, it’s affordable and lastly because it gives me some independence.

question : How old were you, and how did you find out you were the bride of a dragon king? how did you feel/react?

— I was about 21 years old when a female deity that was sent by the Jade Emperor appeared in a dream telling me that I am the destined wife to one of the dragon kings. Which shocked me to the point I was like (insert meme here). She also explained some other things but when I woke up I couldn’t remember any of it; just the part that I am the destined wife a dragon king. I swear this got me thinking and kinda stressed me out for like 2 days but on the third day I started thinking more rationally. “No. It’s Just a dream No…No. It can’t be me. Anybody but me. Looking back to my parent’s divorce I’m probably gonna die alone and I’ve accepted that a long time ago” were my actual thoughts. “I’ll stay single. No drama. No hassle. No mess. Right! I’ve wasted two days with this . It’s time to do something productive like learning how to make Croquembouche that I’ve been putting off for the last three weeks” I said as I rushed out of her room and out the front door to the supermarket for ingredients and forgetting about that weird dream.

question : how do you like or not like being able to see ghosts, deities and gods?

— I hated it. That was the reason that people back in Shanghai called me a cursed child. It was because I was talking to the spirits. I didn’t really see many gods or deities when I was young, but I did see a lot of spirits and ghost. They would try to communicate with me when I was young but as I got older, I could only hear them as ghostly whispers like in those horror movies. I just got too much that when I begged them to leave me alone that they finally did. I could still see them and now also deities and gods walking among us, but I act like I don’t notice than like even other mortals. This is so I don’t draw attention to myself and can just live my life as a normal person.

question : do you want to marry the dragon king in this life?

— Well, I don’t know really. I’ve never thought of myself as the marrying type. When my parents were divorced it was in a way my fault. So, I just assumed all my life that I’m not worthy of having the privilege of marrying. So, I just accepted the fact that I would die alone and moved on with my life. But now since I’ve been told that I am destined to marry someone; never mind the fact that it would be a dragon god. And that it's been proven that the message from that dream isn't just a dream. I don’t really know how to process this. It’s a lot to take in.

question : what will you do if the dragon king comes to marry you?

— Well, I know that I can’t flat out reject him right then and there. I’m probably gonna have to put his proposal and this whole marriage thing on pause because I just can’t right now. I have so many issues I have to deal with concerning this topic. Oh god. I don’t know how to be a wife; let alone being a wife of a deity. I have no idea what I’m gonna do.

question : what kind of "person" do you think your dragon husband is?

— I don’t really know because I don’t really have a type. A guy that’s sweet or a guy that’s tough. I don’t really mind. As long as he’s not an a**hole that wouldn’t mind going on crazy adventures with me. Someone who doesn’t mind growing old together with me.

question : how do you think the "calling" works?

— The “Calling” works by knocking against a mirror three-times and saying their name. But that’s from what I’ve read from old books from a bunch of different mythologies. Not sure if it actually works since I’ve never tried it before and have never had to. (inspired by Yue Hua and SuSu’s mirror video calling from Ten Miles of Peach Blossoms)

question : How do you think the dragon kings' immortality is undone?

— Probably something like this. (A/N: Ignore the subtitles. It's from Heaven Official's Blessing trailer) But that only when I officially agree to be his wife right?

who is the dragon king?

PERSONALITY : list of traits and elaborate
+Positive: Gentle, Intelligent, Calm, Patient
-Negative: Workaholic, Detached, Possessive

— At first, focused on his duties so he could forget about his mortal life which didn’t work. However, it helped him let go of the bitterness that he felt about his mortal life. After that, he just continued to focus on his duties as a dragon which turned him into a workaholic which the other dragons notice it. To the point where the Dagon King would constantly tell him to tone it down and take a break. After constantly working to keep the Ocean under control and keeping the mortals from danger for 800 years nonstop he in a way started to get detached. When he would help mortals travel safely at sea. He wouldn’t see what he’s doing as helping the mortal he would see it as him just doing his duties. That is when the other dragons and the dragon king would tell him to stop and go to the mortal world for a while so take a long break and mingle with the mortals for a while. When it comes to love it, he kind just moved it aside since he felt like he’s not ready. He put that part of his life on hiatus for a long time. So when his wife states that she needs time to process everything about the whole marriage thing he doesn’t push her and is willing to wait until she is ready since he understands and can kinda relate to her since it took him more than 2,770 years to finally sort his sh*t out and start building up the courage to seek his destined wife. He treasures her dearly in this life and is adamant on marrying her. When it comes to others that try to flirt with his destined wife he gets really possessive and makes sure the other guys know that his destined wife is his alone.

BACKGROUND :

— When Wu Chang Sheng first became a dragon it was about 41 years after his death. He can’t remember what happened during those forty years. But the memories of his mortal life was still fresh in his mind. Even though he is glad it’s over he was still bitter about it. When he asked the Jade Emperor ‘why him?’ he got a vague answer, something along the lines ‘there’s something that you possess that others don’t have that proves you worthy of being a dragon.’ Chang Sheng can’t understand what the Jade Emperor meant but just accepted it anyway. At first, when he was learning his duties of what it means of being the Dragon of the Eastern Sea it was a bit difficult. But over time he got the hang of it to the point that the Ocean was intimidated by him. Which is good since that way he’s assured that his part of the Ocean is well behaved and won’t overstep its boundaries; even during the time of the full moon when the Ocean absorbs power and energy that the full moon give off making it stronger than other times. Because a dragon before Chang Sheng was negligent and underestimated the power of the Ocean. Which turned into a disaster because at that time it absorbed power and energy that the full moon and let a tsunami loose on land killing and injuring mortal. But now under Chang Sheng, the Ocean would never dare to do anything of the sorts. He creates a lot of waterspouts deep in the open seas away from land so they don’t harm any mortals because he just can. He either spends most of his days in dragon form flying over the Eastern Sea or in his home.

HOW THEY MET : Chang Sheng first met his wife when he saved her in his dragon form when she was a little girl, but he didn’t know that she was his destined wife since she was only a little girl and Bi Yao also had no idea. When she was older, he saw her from a distance. He instandly recognised her as his destined wife. It was like how he first recognised her in her previous life and yet again her face has slightly changed in this life. He knew that he is finally ready to be with her in this lifetime of hers but he wasn’t ready right then and there to just go up to her yet. But they officially first met when Bi Yao was at an anime convention that she came with Feng Mian. While there she got separated from Feng Mian and was trying to find her friend. Since she cosplayed as Wei Wuxian, she was sometimes stopped by other people that wanted to take a picture of her cosplay which she would agree too since she was nice. After that, she would ask them if they’ve seen cosplayed as the Lan Wangji, the other main lead of Mo Dao Zhu Shi. Most of them would say no but some would point out a few Lan Wangjis in the convention centre. But it turns out that none of them was her friend. It was kinda crowded, and Bi Yao began to lose her balance and was gonna fall backwards in the most cliché way someone ran up and caught her before she hit the ground. To her, he looked quite handsome and he said “That would have been a nasty fall. You need to be careful wifey.” When she registered that he called her ‘wifey’ she got really creeped out since she’s never met this guy and knows nothing about him and yet he calls her wifey. She spotted another Lan Wangji cosplayer and saw that it was indeed her friend. She quickly got out of the guy’s embrace and sprinted to her friend while yelling “LAN ZHAN!!!! Save me!!!!!!” When she was gone from his view, he stared at the arm that held her for a bit before looking back in the direction she ran off too. He knew he stuffed up when he called her wifey, but he found her interesting and is determined to pursue her.

RELATIONSHIP : There are times when Chang Sheng won’t be around for a while because of his duties as a dragon or her would be up in Heaven reporting to the Jade Emperor. He would always tell her when he needs to be away. But he would try and get all his tasks done so be can be with his destined wife and not leave her lonely for too long. The maximum he has been away is about 3 months. Bi Yao knows that he’s busy, so she doesn’t mind that he’s not around all the time. She’s just happy that she has someone that loves her for who she is. After class or work, he’s always there waiting for her so that they can spend time together. Sometimes when she doesn’t have classes, they would hang around her uni campus or explore different stores and restaurants near campus or her workplace.

THEIR STORY :

It was a few weeks after their strange meeting at the anime convention. Bi Yao was a work when her manager told her to deliver some forms and explain/instruct the new stakeholder that want to do business at the company. She’s seen her seniors do it and most of the hard work was already done for her. She just needed to explain and follow the standard and procedure to get this task done. When she opened the door to the conference room, she was surprised to find that the new stakeholder was that weird guy at the anime convention. “So, you’re the new stakeholder?” she asked as she looked at him weirdly. He’s different but I can’t tell why. He turned away from the window to her “Mn” was all he said. ‘Holy sh*t’ he sounds like Lan Wangji. He could probably pass as Lan Wangji if he put on the costume. Stop. Focus’ was her thoughts. So, she cleared and invited him to sit and she started to explain the standards and procedures while going through the forms. After she finished explaining and looked up at him, he was staring like he was admiring her. She got a bit uncomfortable and scooted away a bit. She shifted his focus on the forms in front of him and told him to read over it and sign in a few sections. As he started to do that she was thinking as to why he had this strange aura. When she finally realised, she unintentionally slammed her hands on the table as she shot to her feet making him unintentionally drag his and off the paper, drawing on the table when he was in the middle of signing. “You’re the dragon god,” she said in shock. He just looked up at her and said “Well hello to you too, Wifey. Call me Chang Shen” And that was when she realised that that dream was en real.

After that, he tried asking her to dinner, but she said no. Dinner is too early and too much pressure right now. So, they decided on a casual lunch just to check out his ‘vibes’. If she felt uncomfortable then she would run for the hills. Lunch turned out better then she expected and they both end up walking afterwards which was pleasant. After that casual lunch, they went out on about 5 more dates. That was when Chang Sheng asked her “Would you allow me to court you?" Bi Yao just giggled because his weird was of asking her out was adorable. It’s corny but she likes it. “Of course, you can” which made Chang Sheng’s face brighten up with happiness and they held each other. After breaking out of the hug Bi Yao asked “You sound so old asking me out like that” “Well I’m almost 2,760 years old” which made her eyes widen but she returned to normal when she thought ‘Oh right. He’s a bloody deity. Makes sense now.

A few months into their relationship they were both walking along the beach when Bi Yao stopped and started at the ocean and the sunset. She remembered how she nearly drowned when she was a little girl. Chang Sheng stopped a few steps in front of her when he sensed that she had stopped. “Everything alright, Bi Yao?” he asked her in concern. She just told him how she remembered how she nearly drowned when she was a little girl in Shanghai. “Wait… That was you???” thinking back to that little girl he saved. He sensed that she was important but didn’t know why. “What are you talking about?” she asked him as he was starting to scare her. “Do you remember anything after that?” he asked her. “I remember hallucinating about seeing a drag- Were you the one that saved me?” and he nodded. “Oh my god” was all she could say repetitively as Chang Sheng had turned to the Ocean and was cursing at it.

After a while, in their relationship, he took Bi Yao to his place and that was when she found a box with a hairpin. Which he saw her holding and he started to tell her about it. How he saw her in her past life once when she bought one but didn’t follow her because he wasn’t ready to come into her life. But he bought the same hairpin as a reminder of when he first laid eyes on her for the very first time. He ended up putting it in Bi Yao’s hair as he told her.

ENDING : Chang Sheng was adamant on marrying Bi Yao after getting to know her in a short period of time. But for Bi Yao, it took ages for her to get through her own personal issues before she would say yes.

the interview

question : how is your relationship with the jade emperor?

— We are civil to each other. He’s the emperor and I’m his subordinate. I report to him about what going on in the Eastern Sea and we discuss about how I’m handling my duties and a dragon god.

question : how is your relationship with the dragon king?

— He’s more like an older brother to me, and I look up to him when it comes to handling duties as a dragon. He’s more of a brother than that jerk of an older brother that shared the same blood as me in my mortal life.

question : how did you die in your past life?

— In my mortal life, I joined the military to get away from my toxic brother and parents that kept enabling him. After many battles fought for our kingdom I rose in the ranks and was able to become a general. My loyalty is to the kingdom and the emperor to make the kingdom prosperous and for the people to live peacefully. But my brother who is a low-level court official can’t handle that not everything is about him and that someone else in the family was bringing ‘glory to the family name’ spread rumours that Since I had the military in my hands I could use it to topple the royal family. Most of the officials thought it was ridiculous but the more he spread the rumours the more believable it became. I was unaware of his plot to get rid of me since I was always on the front lines defending the kingdom. The last time I came home and was summoned to the palace there was a huge uproar and that was when I figured out what was happening and the crap that my brother was saying. Even though I tried pleading for my innocence the emperor turned a deaf ear, so I was sent to prison. All I wanted was to get away from him and live my life, but my brother just wouldn’t let me go. I wasn’t even in prison for more than a week when my brother came in late at night to spout crap about how he was supposed to be the one that should ‘bringing glory to the family name’ and other nonsense that made him look more like the narcissistic idiot that he is. I ended up interrupting his rant by saying to just end me, so I don’t have to continue sharing the same blood as him and to spare me from hearing any more of him bull crap. It pissed him off even more and he ended up slitting my throat which I put no effort into stopping him since I was done with this life.

question : why do you think the Jade Emperor chose you to be a dragon?

— That I’m not entirely sure. When I asked the Jade Emperor I either get really vague answers or no answer. I’ve talked about this with the Dragon King and even the God of Human Destiny and they think it’s either due to the merits that I have done to the kingdom in my mortal life or that I have been wrongly accused and this is heaven is of trying to fix this. As for the real reason I have no idea.

question : if you are over 500 years old, why didn't you marry your bride? And how many of her lifes have past since your first 500 years as a dragon? if you aren't over 500 years old, you can ignore this question.

— I didn’t marry my wife after turning 500 years old because I was still bitter about the past and was just still focusing on the duties of being a dragon god. In my mortal life, I didn’t really think about having a wife and being told that I would have one as the dragon god; I just didn’t feel ready for that commitment. While discussing with the Jade Emperor more recently the topic of my destined wife came up and he let it slip that she has reincarnated 27 times already. Which shocked me because I only saw her once a very very long time ago.

question : what would you do if your bride suddenly appeared before you?

— Like right now? I would try not to do anything that would freak her out and make sure to treasure her.

question : have you or your bride ever recognized each other in your past life or her past lives?

— I saw her once just after I turned 1,000 years old. I was walking around in the mortal realm in a big city and I saw her. I recognised her as my destined wife. She looked like how a young lady from a respectable high-class family would look like. Calm, well mannered and delicate young lady. I didn’t feel ready to go up to her and meet her. So, I ended up watching her from afar as she stopped by a stall that sells hairpins and other accessories and chose an elegant floral one. (x) After that I just let her walk off and disappear into the distance. I ended up walking to the same stall and picked up the same hairpin she just bought and bought it. I still have it in a box as something to remind me of her.

COMMENTS : Sorry for the mess that is in my app. I just had too many ideas and notes that I just put them all in at the start and might have forgotten to delete some that don’t make sense with how the final character turned out. Also sorry for the horrible personality parts. I’ve never been good at writing personalities.

SCENES REQUESTS :

— Group date?
— Bi Yao was sitting on a chair out on her bedroom balcony playing her erhu one night when she suddenly stopped. "I know you're there Chang Sheng" She turned to the roof just he made his dragon form visible. He leapt off the roof and landed next to her on the balcony in human form.
— Even though Bi Yao has cut off contact with her mother after divorce and would like it to stay that way. Her mother found a way to worm herself back into her and her father’s life. Which they both never wanted. Her mother tried to up and beg for Bi Yao’s father to take her mother back. Bi Yao’s father would always throw her out but she would continue to throw herself back at him. When her mother found out that Bi Yao was dating someone that is of the supernatural her mother assumed that Bi Yao was dating a demon since she is a cursed child. Her mother swore a cussed at her. At first, Bi Yao stood her ground but when her mother started bringing up the stuff from the past and continued to emotionally abuse her like when she was little. Bi Yao broke down; she felt like the worthless little girl that she was when she was little. At that, her father came in the room and told her mother to back off but she just continued. By now Bi Yao broke down on the floor and was having PTS of her childhood. Just then Chang Sheng burst through the door and saw his beloved as a broken wreck on the floor. He stood in front of her and her mother and told Bi Yao’s mother to leave but she didn’t and was not only insulting him but also continuing the emotional abuse towards Bi Yao. Chang Sheng was fuming at this point that he ended up transforming into his dragon form and let out a roar which terrified Bi Yao’s mother. She dropped to the knees in shock “your….you” she said in a trembling voice. Bi Yao’s father just dropped to his knees and yelled “Dōnghǎi Lóngwáng please have mercy!” as he bowed his head. Cheng Sheng in dragon form kept his eye contract and growled as he told Bi Yao’s mother to leave. Which she rushed out the front door. Chang Sheng told Bi Yao’s father to get up and forget about formalities as Chang Sheng picked up Bi Yao off the floor and they both moved to the couch to sit. He held her tight as she cried while he whispered soothing words to her. She ended up falling in his arms from being exhausted.
