I see new stories and stories being updated in general but the featured page is confusing me cuz I'm mostly seeing older stories being featured instead of some new content. 

I have been on AFF for maybe 2 years I think so I can't tell if it's become less active or not?

I see more people using tumblr, wattpad and archive of our own recently.
