PERSONALITY —
• Since Hang is a relatively introverted person, her family members were shocked that she chose a career path that involves so many human interactions. She is very passionate about music and the art industry as a whole. When something captures Hang's imagination and speaks to her beliefs, --- in her case it's music --- she goes all in, dedicating her time, energy, thoughts and emotions to singing and producing music. Her shyness keeps her from the podium, but she decided to audition nonetheless. As an Idealist, her works are conclusively creative and unique, sparing her a position as a trainee at SM ent. Hang is naturally open-minded, considering that she grew up in a liberal family. So when she moved to Korea for her training period, she was culture shocked with how alarming the k-beauty culture and the pressure the trainees receive. She is also very hardworking and dedicated to her work. While others focusing on the challenges of the moment may give up when the going gets tough, Hang has the benefit of her far-reaching vision to help herself through the challenges she faces. Knowing that what she is doing is meaningful gives herself a sense of purpose and even courage when it comes to accomplishing something she believes in.
As the Chinese proverb goes, Too much of something good is bad for you, Hang often takes her idealism too far, setting herself up for disappointment as, again and again, evil things happen in the entertainment world. Hang can be too altruistic, she always wants to give so much more than she is able to, pushing herself to commit to singing and producing, forgetting to take care of the needs of others in her life and especially herself. Hang is also very private, reserved and self-conscious. This makes her notoriously difficult to really get to know, She often feels have the fear and anxiety for not giving more of herself to those she cares about.
BACKGROUND —
• Hang was born in the capital of Vietnam so she was always a city girl at heart. She lived in Vietnam until she was 10 but her father was transferred to the US. Since there wasn't any other option left, her family had to move all the way to a little quiet town in Texas. Hang didn't fancy the new environment much because she prefers the city and all its delights, tall buildings, city lights, the sound of cars hustling in the highway but she eventually warmed up to Texas. Hang went to a public school and was a relatively loved girl due to her demure and quiet nature. She had her own clique and lived her teenage life just fine. Though Hang wasn't exactly blessed academically and she loathed analytical subjects such as physics and calculus but Hang was the best in music. She used to perform during formals and produced quite a number of original songs. Her music teacher was the one to actually encourage her to audition as an idol considering that Mrs Kwon herself has a son her age that is also considering to pursue the same career.
In 2013, SM ent. held an audition in New Jersey and Hang thought that it wouldn't hurt for her to try it out so she asked her older sister Trinh to bring her to the venue. She ended up not getting picked right away because the judges told her that it's a problem that she is too 'different' to be an idol. But soon got a callback and made it as a trainee.

RELATIONSHIPS —
• best friend / Noel Kwon / 20 / underground rapper / cool, caring, witty / Noel is the son of Hang's music teacher. Initially, Hang and Noel weren't friends but when Mrs Kwon introduced Hang to Noel. They two immediately became inseparable. Hang and Noel both share the same dream and they were always there to help each other improve. They also wrote a song together during the pre-debut year called Beautiful. While Hang trained under SM ent., Noel trained under Bighit ent.

TRAINEE LIFE —
• After years and years of a pretty wholesome life, Hang faces one of the biggest downturns in her entire time of living. Trainee life for Hang was absolutely difficult. Not only she was tested with discrimination, but she was also very lonely. Her vocal coach would never leave her alone, criticising her voice being too lazy when she was clearly better than the others. Her dance instructor would push her off the limits and overwork her compared to the other trainees. Nobody would talk to Hang except for Yeri. Yeri was the only friend Hang made throughout her 6 years of training and maybe a couple of others from different agencies.
At first, Hang thought she just wasn't good enough. She would practice from 5 am to 12 am to every day to improve herself but her coaches could never get enough of her. During the final line up for Red Velvet, Hang decided that if she didn't get picked, she would terminate her trainee contract because deep down, she knew that she would just be wasting her time trying to fit in a place that wouldn't accept her just because of her ethnicity.
After the debut of Red Velvet, a scandal emerged regarding her contract termination with SM ent. due to the racism that exists within the company and Hang clarified that all of it was apparently true.
