Why and What Makes You Read/Write Fanfictions? + Other Questions

Hello!

I'm actually bored haha but like, I want to do this for fun and I want to know your opinions. This is also something like for research purposes.

So, just like the title, I'm wondering why/what exactly makes you read/write a fanfiction?

Also, what aspects are you looking at or pays attention to the most when searching for a fanfiction to read or when you are about to start reading the story?

Are there any genres that you love to read?

What are the reasons that can makes you stop reading a fanfiction?

I'm open to any opinions/answers and you don't have to answer to all of them if you don't want to ^^ But, it will be greatly appreciated if you can spend a little of your free time to answer the questions above.

Thank you in advance!!

001// I'm wondering why/what exactly makes you read/write a fanfiction?
it's because of the idols i love. but since i am a procrastinator, i cannot able to read all my favorite fanfics. i also wanted to write a lot lot lot lot of fics with my faves but then again, i procrastinate a lot.

002// Also, what aspects are you looking at or pays attention to the most when searching for a fanfiction to read or when you are about to start reading the story?
when it comes to reading a fanfic nor writing one, there's only one thing in common: my faves. i am picky when it comes to reading, just my faves. i am picky when it comes to writing, just my faves.

003// Are there any genres that you love to read?
i really love romance mixed with fantasy!! OR mystery-thriller plus angst!!! <3

004// What are the reasons that can makes you stop reading a fanfiction?
dull writing style, narration & grammar. well, the grammar part can be surpassed when i truly love the narration!

Q: Why/what exactly makes you read/write a fanfiction?
A: I both write and read. As for writing: I just got too many fantasies inside my head that I feel like writing down in the form of a fan fiction. I also love to interact with the people, who are reading my works. As for reading: I don't read a lot, although I used to read a whole lot more on AFF years ago. I feel like the overall quality is going backwards, sadly. There are some gems, but you have to look hard for them. I mainly judge by how realistic characters are portrayed and how they grow during the story or how they grew into what they are. If there are unnecessary kinks hidden in the story then I'm out. I am really here for a story and not per se for .

Q: Also, what aspects are you looking at or pays attention to the most when searching for a fanfiction to read or when you are about to start reading the story?
A: If they use correct tagging, grammar, the text styling in general (how much scenery description vs conversational scenes) and the chosen idols they use take in a huge part. I just don't bias certain idols and/or ships. Although I am willing to read about a non bias if the story introduction seems promising.

Q: Are there any genres that you love to read?
Office Au, Fantasy Au, Slice of life, Romance, School or University Au, Dark Au, Drama, Romcom.

Q: What are the reasons that can makes you stop reading a fanfiction?
A: Badly balanced characters, cliché overloads, PWP () only, unnecessary kinks, anything that has to do with animals, mpreg, any form of gloryfied abuse, violence or .

Hello! Randomly popping by to just answer these questions since I'm procrastinating, HAHA. :")

->So, just like the title, I'm wondering why/what exactly makes you read/write a fanfiction?
What makes me want to read: I personally love stories that have a captivating story line that I have not read before or the author's style of writing is very beautiful/artful that makes me want to write it. I also tend to like alternate universe stories more than if the story is set in the present time (i.e. the kpop idol is in their kpop group and meets the OC who is a fan, and they somehow fall in love). I tend to favour the writer's style over the plotline. However, if this is an author I already follow, I tend to pay more attention to the plotline. I like giving new authors/authors I haven't read before a chance and I pay more attention to style. I also cannot read stories with certain themes such as, but is not limited to, .
What makes me write: I'm not really sure. I enjoy writing, that is for sure. I think it gives me a good way to escape my life sometimes, because I feel overwhelmed with everything going on around me. I don't have a lot of time for myself anymore and I gave up a lot of hobbies as I grew older. Writing is one of those hobbies I can do anywhere as long as I have my laptop with me. It's also because I grew up and realized there's actually a lot of injustices in the world/things that bother me, so I kind of vent and write about it in my stories. It's also because my teachers (way back in the day) said I had a knack for writing and I should consider getting myself published. Obviously the world is vast, so I don't think I've reached that level where I could get published, but it's a goal I'll think about when I get settled more into my life and improve enough to reach that point.

->Also, what aspects are you looking at or pays attention to the most when searching for a fanfiction to read or when you are about to start reading the story?
I personally do not mind improper grammar and spelling since not everyone's first language is English (and I personally know I have pretty bad grammar and spelling sometimes), but to an extent. I cannot read stories where the grammar does not make sense and where simple words are improperly spelt.
I personally pay attention to the summary and first chapter/prologue the most, because it gives me a good idea of a) if I am even interested in the plotline at all, b) if the author has a decent grasp of English language structure, and c) if the author's writing style captivates me.
Writing style wise, I prefer simplicity (these are the fics that make you feel empty when you read them because of diction and the stylistic use of the page, if that makes sense) or authors who are able to describe their characters' actions, feelings, and thoughts in a descriptive manner. Again, I actually prefer my idea of an interesting writing style over plotline most of the time.

->Are there any genres that you love to read?
I personally love dystopian, fantasy, fluff mobster, spy, assassin, friendship, comedy, mystery and slice-of-life stories. I cannot get into a story if it is purely romance anymore. It's usually an appreciated but not necessary side bonus. I am definitely okay with any other genre, so long as it's a shorter story. I read anything and everything, but the ones I listed above are my favourite genres.

->What are the reasons that can makes you stop reading a fanfiction?
I tend to read completed works because I don't like the emotional heartbreak when the author never updates ever again.... but for in general: I drop the work when there is too much jargon (relevant to their AU! world that I cannot search myself on the internet) that the author throws in without explaining, the Female OC (if applicable, and shipped with the kpop idol) seems very Mary Sue such that she is all of the following: so "perfect with no flaws whatsoever", "super innocent and naive", "never dated before", "kind", "is not like other girls". I'm a little over that narrative because I see that trope overused in many fics.
And I CANNOT and WILL NOT ever be okay with cheating in any form, so the second one of the main characters cheat and whoever their lover is decides to forgive them and return to their arms, I will drop the fic. Unless there is a very specific reason for this to be part of the plotline and I see character growth, I am not going to be okay with it. I tend to read a little after the cheating happens to see where the story goes from there. If I don't like it, I drop it.
I also drop any stories where there is an abusive relationship that is the main ship that is supposedly going to reach "happily ever after". I can't stomach it and unless there is knowledge that the one being abused leaves that relationship, the abuser gets help and they take a very long break from each other where we see that the abuser has grown as an individual during that time (and they do not end up being the ship at the end), I drop the fic immediately.

There's probably more I can add to each section, I just have lots of thoughts LOL. I'll end it here.
Hope this helps you!

have some time on my hands so why not

Why do I read / write fanfics?
- It's similar to the reason why I read books, I want to dive into a world of imagination but it's way cooler because you have your favorite idols starring in them lmao. I write fanfics mainly because I love writing and I love to make stories with the idols that I stan. Reading fanfics is what drove me to write my own fanfics because sometimes, that ending doesn't seem to fit right with you.

what aspects are you looking at or pays attention to the most when searching for a fanfiction to read or when you are about to start reading the story?
- There's 3 main things I look at which is the plot, flow of words and characters. If the fanfic involves an idol that I'm a fan of, it usually motivates me more to check the story out.

Are there any genres that you love to read?
- a huge ball of everything as long as isn't in it. I'm not a big fan of it but there are some that have caught my interest. I'm a huge er for fluff and angst :D

What are the reasons that can makes you stop reading a fanfiction?
- ah there are a few but the main thing is usually the ones with bland choice of words. I haven't found a lot of them on AFF but it's one of the reasons why I stopped visiting Wattpad since most of the stories were boring and had a lot of grammatical errors that were too hard to turn a blind eye on. It's fine for them to post it, it's a way of growth and all since we all have to start somewhere.
