What is Kpop to You?

Hi everyone. What is Kpop to you? This question keeps playing on my head.

You know what is K-pop to me? Kpop is where a new life begins. Music inspires me a lot especially in writing stories. Kpop makes my mind so calm and feel so energetic. Kpop, in my view, is defined as everyone in the industry creating music for the listeners to enjoy.

I like popular groups like BTS, GOT7 and EXO but I prefer underrated groups better like 24K, VICTON and so on. You guys may not know what I am trying to write.

My interest in Kpop is still the same but my interest in BTS is getting lower. I seem to not interested in BTS because why? Not because of their music, I love their music. It's because nowadays in my country, K-pop is defined as BTS and everyone knows BTS. I try to talk about other groups and they say that 'insert group name' , awful, this and that. I don't have anyone to talk about groups other than BTS. Honestly, I don't mind their popularity. In fact, I am proud of them getting well-known all around the world but now, other groups tend to be shadowed away. Like... they are not recognized in the world of Kpop. Don't get me wrong, though. It's just that majority in the society at my country only knows BTS. I actually recommend them to listen other groups like SHINee, EXO, GOT7 and Seventeen, they keep saying that they will listen.

I actually gave my friends one of the albums I have (It's SHINee's CD from Why So Serious? and also BTS Danger era album) and you know what? They don't return my album, claimed it as theirs and gave gack the scribbled, ruined, wrecked SHINee album. I was disappointed by it and I found a note. It is my friend's writing saying that "I don't like those oldies you like. Now, Kpop is only for BTS. Those radio stations playing other groups are stupid. They should play BTS songs only."

I am confused with people nowadays. Why do they think Kpop is only BTS? Not spreading hate though. I am a curious as a human being and I still like BTS but not as hyped as before.

That's really rude . Your friend shouldn't have ruined the album even if they're not interested . That's really wrong . Also in order to have new generation idols , we need to have the older generation . They come hand in hand . I think they still don't understand why even until today , new generation idols tend to pay tribute to their senior (the older generation idols ) by signing their songs , learning their dance and etc ... Isn't that clearly shows how much they have contributed to the K- Pop industry ? Without the older generation , there's no evolution . Everything is correlated . Just like phone. The olden days phone are so big and bulky .. However , as time passes , phone are now smaller in size , have more functions and etc... Without the old phone , I don't think we can use our phone now to talk and interact with people from across the world .. It's the same concept. To forget the older generation it's like kacang lupakan kulit

That's not a good friend. Who would destroy an album and call them oldies?
I'm triggered tbh. Because I started liking K-Pop and SHINee were the rookies at that time.
People will always assume what K-Pop is. They will connect the genre to a group they know.

In my country, 2008~2010... K-Pop was related to Super Junior and Wonder Girls.
Their songs became viral.

By 2015, Oppan Gangnam Style became viral and so people associated that with K-Pop

Here comes 2017 to present, BTS goes global thanks to BMA Social Media Artist Award.

I swear to you. BTS may not be associated to K-Pop in the next few years. Why? Because people follow trends.
I'm not saying BTS is going to go downhill. That is not the case. Success follows if you work hard.
What I'm saying is that social trends change and K-Pop will develop.
K-Pop is just Korean Popular Music. Whatever is popular is under that and can expand to other genres.

Would you guys consider Uhm Junghwa, Baek Jiyoung, Fly to the Sky as artists under K-Pop? Maybe yes, Maybe no. Because K-Pop is subjective to the listener.

This is my opinion though. People will change. Just make sure how you think is not affected by them. We can't make people change their minds. But you have the choice to associate with them or not. I hope you find better friends =_=

In my place, people used to know kpop as oppan gangnam style. Now they know kpop as BTS.
