EMANON'S 王翱文 OF LEAD VOCALIST

翱文 WANG AOWEN

chakayuko • lou • 8/10

the basics.

name » Wang Aowen

nickname(s) »
Snow Fairy - created by her fans because of her fair skin and her dainty-looking face and graceful behaviour

Aobei / 翱贝 - used by her Chinese/Taiwanese fans (or another Chinese member?). It's a mix between her name Aowen and the term baobei which is a term of endearment, akin to darling or love. After her group members find out that she likes the name quite a bit, some of them also begin to use  it.
우유/ Wuyu / milk - A nickname given to her by her group mates because of her pale skin, her love for that beverage and because it sounds innocent and baby-like, befitting to  one of the youngest members.

birthplace & birthday » Hualien, Taiwan, Republic of China + 04. 30. 2001

hometown » Hualien, Taiwan, Republic of China

ethnicity » Han Taiwanese

language »
Mandarin Chinese (Guoyu dialect)  - native, fluent;
Taiwanese Hokkien - since it is a popular language spoken by many people in her hometown, she picked it up naturally. Speaks it almost fluently.

— Korean - conversational, has good pronounciation and grammar but lacks reading/writing skills

face claim » 紫宁 / Zhang Zining / Winnie (PD 101 China/MERA)

backup face claim » Yuqi (G-Idle); Elkie (CLC)

appearance » At 160cm and 48kg, Aowen is small and cute. She has a round face with big, double-lidded eyes, chubby cheeks and a large nose. Her lips are pouty and small, her teeth large, pearly white and naturally straight.  Her skin is very pale and despite her height, she has long limbs.
Overall, with her slight resemblance to a Hamster, Aowen doesn't feed perfectly into the typical Korean beauty standards. But she is deemed pretty nonetheless, and aces the 'innocently pretty' look.
Aowen is said to be a Sohee-lookalike.

style » Aowen's style is pretty but odd and impractical. She loves long and flared dresses or skirts so she's rarely seen wearing pants in summer. She's also rather modest and conservative, she's seldomly wearing anything revealing in her free time, it's not just about cleavage, she also often covers her arms and legs. During the warm months she looks like a doll, wearing long, pastel-coloured dresses. In the colder moths, she usually wears trench-coats and warm sweaters.

Her parents always thought that jeans and denim looked cheap, so she doesn't own one single item of it. Since Aowen comes from a more wealthy background, the majority of her clothes are made of expensive fabrics. Neither she nor her family cares much about brand names and shirts with large prints of 'LOUIS VUITTON' or 'BURBERRY' look tacky to her, but if you know expensive brands well, you can definitely find some of their stuff in her wardrobe.
Aowen likes everything blue and rose-colored so these colours are heavily featured in her daily attire.

" success isn't a miracle. it's the addition of many instances of putting in effort."

the girl next door.

personality »

If you look put Aowen's resumee, it would sound nearly perfect: born in a wealthy household, good at academics, friendly, debuting at seventeen after just one year of training and pretty to boot. And really, Aowen used to think quite highly of herself - until she got a taste of the training experience in Korea. Suddenly she wasn't the model student anymore, among the other girls she was just that kid who always requires help with the language and with her dancing. Add her homesickness, a few glowing stones and the fact that Eom Jiae forced her group on hiatus as soon as debut promotions were over, and voilá: you've got the mess she currently feels stuck in.

Now, Aowen is a very filial girl. Despite her young age, she expresses a mature way of thinking in concern of her loved ones who she would put before herself. Aowen is fiercely protective and loyal to those she considers truly close to her and would do anything to keep them safe and happy. She was raised strictly, but she knows how much her parents love her, even when they don't express it outright and as an only child, she feels pressured to make them proud and show her gratitude. They are her motivation to push herself constantly to her limits and to  maintain a sunny and happy demeanour in her darkest moments, and the reason why she feels so upset when she can't reach the expectations she set for herself. In the past two years she spend in Korea, she started to miss them and her home in Taiwan so much, that her hometown became an idealization in her mind. Don't get her wrong, she loves being an idol but during the long hiatus, her yearning for her mother land grew, and so did the sentiments of otherness in regards to Korea. A part of her feels like she is ungrateful, since it's a Korean company that gave her the opportunity to stand on stage, but the heart wants what it wants. It's not to the point of leaving her members to start a solo career in her homeland but sometimes she gets wistful.

The language bareer is one of her biggest obstacles. Since Aowen's mother had been an announcer, speaking eloquently was something her parents' gave much importance to. She had no problem with that in Mandarin or even Hokkien, her vocabulary and way of speaking used to be always more refined that that of her peers, but ever since she moved to Korea and had to use Korean, she found difficulty expressing herself. Aowen manages everyday situations just fine but when it comes to more important issues or expressing her feelings, she is often misunderstood or creates awkwardness due to her inability to find the appropriate words for her thoughts. Frustrated with that shortcoming, she started to keep many her thoughts to herself (with a few exceptions concerning instances she feels insulted or hurt in her pride) and bottle things up instead of voicing her deeper opinions.

If there's one thing that makes Aowen furious, it's overstepping of boundaries. She doesn't care about intentions, if Aowen says that she is uncomfortable with something or wants to be left alone, she better gets her wish, or things would get ugly. And with ugly, Aowen means that she'll throw a hissy fit, regardless of seniority status and who is watching. As one of the younger and foreign members, some of the girls might feel like taking her under their wing but they underestimated Aowen's stubbornness. She tries to be as independent as possible and hates to be perceived as weak, so she plows through any kind of hardship with a forced smile. She was raised to be self-sufficient and prior to moving to Korea, she managed to reach every goal she set her mind to. So she has trouble accepting defeat or relying on help now, since she doesn't want to feel like she regressed. In her most vulnerable moments, she feels small, just like a simple teenager overwhelmed by the foreign country, media attention and nowadays, the weird supernatural powers, and she hates it. So she lashes out, becomes irritable in order to avoid pitiful glances thrown at her and the constant murmur of 'are you okay?'.

Likewise, she wouldn't let mean comments or thinly-veiled jabs slide, whether aimed towards her, her group mates or someone she considers precious to her. She'd be the first one call someone out for serious misbehaviour, regardless of their seniority status or the company's instructions to stay quiet on that matter. She's a bit particular in that aspect, Aowen would only let close friends and is sensitive about criticism that doesn't come directly from her instructors or someone she acknowledges as worthy to dish it out.

The way she carries herself is graceful and sophisticated, the reason the fans gave her the nickname Snow Fairy'. On the downside, she's a bit too aware of the cameras and wants to portray herself in a way which wouldn't embarass her parents. So she is sometimes too proud to 'act dumb' on TV, at least on occasions in which strangers could judge her for it.  A handful of staff members who worked with her would even describe her as stuck up at times, showing dissatisfaction with their stage outfits or the scripts they get during variety shows because she feels like those are insulting towards her. Aowen likes to be perceived as a role model or the perfect daughter, she likes innocent concepts and being a cutie with brains. She chose that career path because she liked it, knowing that she had the brains to become a judge or an engineer in Taiwan if that had been her goal, so she is passionate  but not desperate, and  there is a limit to the things she would do for her dream. Aowen is very prideful and as a result, she'd never sell herself short. She wouldn't blame herself if they aren't doing well with their careers or if things around the gemstones would get awry. She's doing the best she can without sacrificing her mental or physical health and doesn't think that anyone should expect more from her. She holds her group members to the same standards as herself, she expects them to show a certain amount of professionalism but wouldn't like someone who sacrifices themselves for the group.

Lastly, Aowen hates being caught off-guard. She is good at coming up with a shedule and sticking to it but horrible at improvision since she dislikes not being confronted with a situation she couldn't mentally prepare herself for. In that way, she can be kind of rigid and conservative, refusing to go with a new idea if there is not enough time to prepare for it.

+ graceful, thoughtful, confident, protective, dignified, mature
- uptight, difficulty expressing herself, rigid, spoiled, irritable
+/- filial, prideful, self-sufficient, quiet
rawenclaw, lawful good, overarchiever that must deal with not being the best anymore

hobbies.

calligraphy and writing poems.
fashion, shopping.
singing and playing piano.

habits.

Her movements and gestures are very dainty, for example she has a straight posture, sits with her legs closed and walks gracefully.
Aowan's bad habit is that she often scrunches up her nose when she doesn't find the right word to express herself in Korean.
— Uses a wrong word for something. Her grammar and pronounciation are mostly fine, but since Aowan likes to express herself as eloquently as possible, she sometimes uses words in a wrong context or creates neologisms. Example: 'Has someone seen my tooth stick?' instead of tooth brush.

likes.

A huge fan of the taiwanese girl group S.H.E, in particular Hebe. Won't stop talking about how much she likes their music, voices and distinct personalities when she's asked why she likes them. They were the ones that made her want to pursue a career as a singer in first place. She's the kind of fan that cried when she had an opportunity to see them live, would probably cry again if she saw them again.

— Likes neither coffee nor tea, milk with honey is the way to go.

— A big fan of ballads, especially Chinese ones. Likes songs with deep, meaningful lyrics.
— Taiwanese food. She gets emotional eating fried dumplings because that's a dish her mother used to cook for her back home.
— Cherry Blossoms. She uses fragrances and lotions that smell like them so Aowen is often surrounded by a faint cherry blossom scent.
— Make Up. Even though her style is rather innocent than flashy, she likes learning about the different ways to draw and accentuate her eyes, brows and lips.
— Cute things! She's a naturally girly girl and enjoys everything soft, plushy and pastel-colored.

dislikes.

Having stage outfits with much cleavage or dressing in innapropriately short shorts. She is a talented performer and she feels like it's below her to result to these kind of concepts to earn money or popularity.
Public transportation. It's gross, especially in summer where she's surrounded by sweaty and smelly people on a subway train. Since she has enough money, she would rather pay a taxi for herself and her members instead of using the subway or bus.
Germs. She's a bit pelicular in that aspect, as she hates sharing food, make up and even her hair brush because she doesn't want anyone's bacteria on her.

Any kind of animal cruelty. Would rather be accused of having a bad attitude than eating a live octopus.
Overly braggy lyrics / 'badass' girl crush concepts. Aowen is a feminine girl and doesn't think that there's anything wrong with that. Performing in purple lipstick, gold chains and military pants is something she wouldn't really like.
Too provocative concepts. She barely turned 18. Showing cleavage and doing y dances is something she's currently not comfortable with.

trivia.

Aowen refers to her unnies as jiejies and her dongsaengs as meimeis, whether they are Chinese, Korean or another ethnicity (as long as nobody objects to that). She uses this as a term of endearment. The closest members to her will also get individual Chinese nicknames since she likes expressing her affection that way. Aowen also loves when someone she likes gives her a cute nickname, as long as it doesn't have any connotation to being one of the youngest/a baby.
Would probably cling like a koala to another Chinese/Taiwanese member, if there was one. She misses her home a lot so she'd love to have somebody she could talk Mandarin with.
She's a buddist, albeit not a very religious one.
— While her Korean skills were bad during her training time, since her debut, she put more effort into learning the language and by the start of the story, knows how to communicate well in everyday life and got almost entirely rid of her accent. However, as explained in the personality section, her vocabulary is limited and she can't express uncommon things well.

— Not proficient at writing Korean. Still confuses the ㄱ and  ㄴ or theㅓ andㅏ and all of the complex grammar rules sometimes. Therefore, fan signs are sometimes a headache, and she's often afraid to embarass herself by

— Good at poetry in Chinese. Can write beautiful poems, lyrics and texts in her native language.
— Prefers Chinese to Korean music. Went to Korea for the opportunities and since she liked their idol culture but her playlists only feature very few Korean songs. On the other hand, she listens to any Taiwanese/Chinese girl group there is - S.H.E, Popu Lady, Dream Girls, she loves them all.
— But if asked, her favorite Korean celebrities are Seohyun and IU, she also likes the concepts of Apink and April.
— Aowen has dry skin. On the bright side, she never had to deal with much akne but the downside is that her skin type is likelier to get wrinkles early and she's a bit paranoid about that. Therefore she uses a lot of high-end skin products, monstruizes, exfoliates and applies anti-age products religiously on a daily basis.
— Is known for being savage towards her male fans. Would answer questions from ahjussi fans asking to marry her with 'i'm a kid, though^^'. Is very sweet towards fans who don't show romantic interest in her, though.

home is where your heart is.

background » As the only child to a radio announcer and an university professor, Aowen had been the child of socialites, not rich enough to be called a golden spoon, but wealthy nonetheless. Her parents demanded many things of her from the start, as two individuals who came far in live, they wanted the brightest future possible for their only daughter. It was the environment that could make or break a child, and luckily, Aowen was part of the former category. Blessed with smarts, athleticism and beauty, so she could keep up with their requests and was always slightly ahead of the other children, in her first developmental steps and later in her academics.  While her parents were strict, they spend a lot of time teaching her personally and went to a lot of family outings and vacations with her so she could see the world. Aowen understood that this was their way of showing love to her, they wanted her to exceed because they wished the best for her and not to boast about their archievements to their colleagues. And because they invested so much time and care, she always tried to excell and be the best daughter possible.

Her teachers adored her, her class mates envied her occasionally but still thought well of her for the most part, since she was friendly and would help them with their exercises. Aowen flourished under the positive feedback she got for her efforts and at one point, her parents' expectations were more of a motivation to her instead of a burden. She was class president and youngest leader of the tennis club in the history of her high school, played the piano well and had a beautiful singing voice. Her parents always wanted her to get a respectable, well-paying job but when she announced that she wanted to become a singer, they allowed her, because they believed that she could overcome the odds and be successful. However, her first few auditions weren't fruitful and Aowen realized how sparse the opportunities for a singing career and how huge the competition for those opportunities in her home country were. She was so caught up in her positive feedback loop, that she didn't quite realize that there were  thousands of even prettier girls who were good singers and played even more instruments than her, and that in the grand sheme of things, she actually wasn't that outstanding. Irritated by her lack of success, she was about to think of another path until a friend of hers explained the Kpop phenomen to her. Aowen had heard of that genre before, but she wasn't familiar with it. However, a quick search on google showed her instances of South Korea's idol culture and she was optimistic: there were so many debuts, so many companies searching for pretty and young gils, that the chances to be be contracted and debut weren't quite that slim. Aowen decided to give it a shot and spontaneously decided to audition for the most famous Kpop companies.

And she was successful! JYP invited her to a private audition in South Korea, flight and an one-day stay included. So with her parents' permission she travelled to Korea and auditioned just few hours after landing with her plane. And it was a disaster - the judge asked her to sing a Korean song and Aowen had to shamefully admit under his scrunticizing gaze that she didn't know any. She knew exactly that they wouldn't call her back and because she didn't know when she'd have another opportunity to come to Korea again, she decided to not let the rest of her day go to waste and cram a few more auditions into her afternoon. The few auditions turned into one, since she underestimated the queue she would face at Anmo entertainment. But in the end, that one company was the only one she needed, as her rendition of Dream Girls - Tears But Also Need To Be Beautiful convinced their judging team that she'd be a good fit for the company. The call came a week later, when she was already back in Hualin again but since it was a definite offer of a two year contract opposed to a simple second round of auditions, her parents let her travel to Seoul to pursue her dream again, this time on their expenses.

RELATIONSHIPS »

Mother /  Wu Zixuan  / 54 / announcer at tbr radio station
gentle, graceful, eloquent, outspoken, strong-willed, charismatic, ambitious
Aowen gets often called the younger version of her mother because their looks resemble each other a lot. However, their personalities aren't that alike, while Aowen is quiet and introverted, her mother's charisma endears everyone to her and makes her a social butterfly. Aowen aspires to be more like her, and she's sure that her mother knows that. They are close, though they aren't as affectionate with each other as other families are.

Father / Wang Jiaolong  / 60 / professor for economics at Hualin university
strict, patriotic, prideful, fair, solemn, inexpressive, quiet (expresses love/caring through toughtful actions rather than words)
Her father didn't like that she wanted to pursue a career in South Korea rather than China, but after he researched the differences of the Chinese music industry and the Korean one, he realized that his daughter would have more chances of being successful overseas and granted her wishes.
He doesn't express himself much and most people would think that their way of interacting with each other is cold and distant, but he is very proud of her, regardless what happens. He silently worries a lot about her and carries a picture of her in his wallet. After she went to Korea, he started to have some health issues but he never brought them up, not wanting to burden her with worry when she was out there, chasing her dreams.

friend / Chou Tzuyu / 1999-liner / idol
introverted, kind, soft-hearted, sophisticated, thoughtful
Tzuyu and Aowen first met backstage at a music show. Aowen knew that Tzuyu was a fellow Taiwanese, so because people of their ethnicity were so rare in Kpop, she got excited and had the courage to approach the JYP idol. They exchanged numbers and soon bonded over their homecountry, similar upbringing and matching personalities. Although they don't really message each other every day and they aren't as close as best friends usually are, they are each others closest celebrity friends outside of their respective group members. Even though no one understands them when they speak Mandarin together, they can also have incomprehensible conversations in Korean which consist of tons of inside jokes one after another.

— rival / Jeon Jiyoo / 1998-liner / member of emanon
calm, resilient, intelligent, stays true to her words, witty, funny, negative, irritable, lazy, nihilistic
Jeon Jiyoo is the type of person Aowen is incompatible with; Aowen tries to be perfect in the eyes of others while Jiyoo outright rejects their standards, and whoever put them in the same group clearly had underestimated the tensions that would arise. It starts with Jiyoo putting down Aowen's favorite dramas for being predictable, continues with Aowen harping on at Jiyoo for looking at the clock one time too many during practice and Jiyoo scoffing about Aowen being too faux-enthusiasted on variety.
Aowen believes that Jiyoo has the wrong attitude to be a girlgroup member; she brings the group down by putting in the bare minimum and shows not enough professionalism. To Aowen, this is a crucial point for their group that can make them or break them, you can't succeed with a member who just bumbles around. Also, Jiyoo's worldview seems too warped, if she hates other people so much, why did she choose to become an entertainer?

(btw for any other applicants reading this: collabs welcome)

Make yourself worth it.

stage name » Aowen

POSITION » lead vocalist (back-up: main vocalist or sub-vocalist)

tALENT TWINS » Choi Hyojung of Oh My Girl for everything (back-up: Pristin's Yehana for everything)

TRAINEE YEARS » Thirteen months

TRAINEE LIFE » When Aowen came to Korea, she only knew the minimum of Korean neccessary to survive in this foreign country, mainly 'hello', 'thanks' and 'please'. She's a person that usually learns quickly but because training was very draining, she barely had time or motivation to practice her language skills after she finished dancing practice in the early AM hours.

The actual idol training (aka singing, dancing) was difficult to her. She was one of the best singers of her company but she had no prior dancing experience, therefore keeping up with the other trainees who had been training for much longer was a struggle at first. But because she was sporty and a quick learner, she did better than other newcomers and her movements were naturally very graceful so she was good at the finer details of the choreo and didn't looked off in comparison to the rest of the group. Her weak point is her lack of endurance, after practicing for a few hours her movements would become increasingly sloppy and less powerful than those of others, but for the most part she fit in talent-wise.

If there were other Chinese/Taiwanese trainees, Aowen would have been best friends with them. She missed her home country more than the usual foreign trainee and it was very noticable. Towards the rest of the girls, the Koreans, she was friendly, probably even had some she would call 'friends', even though their friendship wouldn't have been a deep one. Aowen was liked or at least tolerated by the others for the most part, since she never gave a reason to not be.

know your best.

NECKLACE
» Aowen's pendant is a moonstone. It's white with a slight blue adularescence when it meets the light. The stone is encaved into an intrensicate silver necklace, as pictured in the image above. The pendant itself is fairly small, not much bigger than one and a half centimeter. She keeps it on a short silver necklace, so that it wouldn't dangle around when she danced and possibly choke her.
Unlike most gemstones, the moonstone scatters the light instead of absorbing it or letting it pass through completely, which gives it an appearance as if it was 'glowing within'. She later researched it and found out that the stone is made of
orthoclase, part of the feldspar group.

power » Power of light. Just like the moonlight can illuminate the darkness of the night, Aowen's moonstone can light up a room to any degree of brightness she desires. It can also absorb all the light in a room, leaving it pitch black. At the beginning she couldn't really control the source of light but with practice, she can either focus the bright- or darkness around her pendant, like a bonfire or a small black hole; or she can light/darken the place she is in evenly so a definite source of light can't be found. With practice, she can expand the dimensions of the light and gains more control of her power, at first, she struggled to light up a space as small as her bed room in the dorms, with time she can extend her power to control all the light in a medium-sized building. There are no special effects, no sudden wind that's blowing her hair or dramatic music in the background, all she can do is change the amount of light.

the reaction » She was confused at first but the more she thinks about it, the less she likes it. Aowen is her parents' only child, so she feels responsible to look after them when they get older, and considering that almost every en in history was either enslaved or killed, she doesn't want to put herself in danger or fight a war. There are a lot of girls who dream about being special and having superpowers, why did she have to be one of the descendants when she was happy with her current life?

On the other hand, she must admit that the stone really fit her. It's meaning was to protect travellers, especially those who moved far away from home. It was also linked to feminine devine being, a sort of 'spiritual maternal figure' that would protect the wearer.

INTERVIEW »

— Hello. Please introduce yourself.

Nice to meet you, I'm Emanon's Snow Fairy and lead vocalist, Wang Aowen.

— How did you feel about Eom Jiae?

We were never the closest, but I know that Jiae doesn't act like that without a target. Target? Is it target? (her face scrunches up in confusion) Oh, I mean reason. It was bad of her and I was upset, but it wasn't her usual self, what I want to say is that she usually is different and I know that... Ugh, this is making me frustrated, may I speak in Mandarin? (continues in her native language) It was wrong nevertheless, as an idol you shouldn't lose your self-control that easily, but it was a pity she had to halt her career after that incident. I used to be resentful towards her for putting our group into a hiatus because of her actions but I've forgiven her since then, after all, she lost much more than us.

— How about we talk about your necklace? How did you feel about it?

I don't really like it. I'm not sure what to make out of it, whether it puts pressure on me to save the world. But I heard of the tale of the spirits and I'm afraid that something malicious could happen to me.

— Did anything started changing after getting it?

This might be a embarassing issue to talk about, but I once woke up and had to go to the bathroom at night. I usually stumble through the darkness and hurt my toes on the bedposts, but I had no problem that time. It was as if I was seeing just fine, despite there being no obvious source of light in the room. To be frank, I was freaking out.

— What do you feel about the other members?

It differs from each person. Sometimes, living together with so many other girls is stifling, since some of them have much higher energy levels than you and they wouldn't leave you alone. A lot of the jie jies are a bit overbearing; I know that they mean well but I don't want to be treated like a kid just because I'm younger. Overall, I'm getting along with the quiet ones the best and I'm much closer to some of them than to others, but there is no one I particularly dislike.

— Well. What's your dreams in the future?

I want to be popular. I want us to do well in all of Asia and I wish that we can have promotions in China, too. For as long as I'm still young, I want to experience stardom and live my life to the fullest. In a few years, when I'm older and my parents can't look after themselves anymore, I want to fulfill my duty as a daughter and come back home to take care of them. It would be nice if I could be still a member and participate with activities on the side, but if that's not possible, I'd choose family over the group.

— Thank you for being here.

Thank you for listening. (bows her head)

comments/suggestions »

I know that Zi Ning might be too old to be her face claim (though I wasn't aware of that when I was coming up with her character, I thought that she'd be born around 2000) and that there aren't many pictures of her (though there will be more soon! she's currently ranking 5th on pd101 china). But I had her face in mind when I was writing down Aowen's personality, so I think that the vibes her face give off are a good match for this character.

But I have no qualms if you prefer one of her backups, either.
I don't know in which direction you want to take this story but her ill father and her longing for her home country is her weak point and something those spirits could use against her, imo.
Also, please read this, I don't know if the meanings behind the gemstones are of any interest to you, but the first paragraphs of this are really close to Aowen's situation (X).
I hope that Aowen doesn't sound too perfect! I honestly think that a lot of idols have a pretty high list of achievements, since debuting and getting popular usually requires a certain amount of discipline and visuals, so I personally don't think a character like Aowen is too far off, but if you think different, please let me know.
Also, I think that it's common for foreign idols to miss their home country, so I wanted to explore that more and create a character that hadn't quite assimilated in Korea yet. So I created Aowen who was a little miss perfect back in Taiwan but became a young, confused teenager in Korea.

comments/suggestions » Not enough brain juice to get creative...maybe later...

password » IU - Good Day (I first wanted to use a singer of Chinese descent, but Fei's Fantasy was too y and I didn't find a Korean Zhang Liyin song that really described Aowen's situation. So I used IU's Good Day, since the early IU music fits the vibes Aowen gives off - pretty and talented girl that excells at cute/innocent concepts.
