PERSONALITY :

Bieun could be classed as one of the most focused girls you’ve ever seen, especially when she learn lyrics and dance moves. She’s so focused that she doesn’t know what’s happening around her. The reason for this is because she’d be always lacking in something, with dancing she’s isn’t the best dancer in the world and for lyrics, she’s pretty forgetful but always manages to learn them all in one night – that’s how focused she can get. She challenges people by setting high but attainable standards and expectations.

Despite looking cold and hard to approach, Bieun is a very honest person—in both a good way and a bad way—she’s the girl that everyone would go to, to sort out their problems, if they need a logical and unbiased point of view. She likes it better this way because she isn’t a massive fan of showing emotions or having others show emotion towards her. This way, she is able to become close to her members without being uncomfortable about being who she is. So, she takes in everyone’s problems, no matter who they are or what problems it is and solve them – she’d never reject problem no matter how stupid it’d sounds. Bieun absolutely hates liars and would always tell the truth no matter how much it hurts the other person but the thing is with that she’d always be kind about it and nice about it. She only speaks the truth...well at times she does, she’s fine with a few white lies, but once they get bigger – that gets out of hand. If you look into her eyes you’ll always find the truth.

Sometimes most trainees are scared to be playfully mean to her, but if you’re close enough you’d know that she’s joking...half the time. She becomes really serious and holds up a scary and cold face so that people know she's angry. She just too hard to approach for some trainee. Bieun would always be straightforward with people and sometimes she does it obliviously but she gets annoyed when people aren't straightforward, for no reason at all - but it can be very scary at times. She can be a tad bit mean when she wants to which is also why people are scared of her. She'll just give them this death scare and people would know not to mess with her. Well the moral of the lesson is do not mess with Bieun when she’s angry because what I’ve just stated before can’t even come close to how she reacts when she’s angry.

Bieun rarely smiles and when she does it genuine, because of this she’s seen as cold not only because of that reason, but she can be cold to the people she doesn’t like and she can be extremely cold to the people she likes. She comes out as mean when in truth she doesn’t mean to. She’d always seem a little cold when she’s giving out tough love. She also looks like a strong and stable girl, one who won’t break – she doesn’t, at all and she would never. She's the kind of girl who you'd never thought you'd see cry because she never does. There are times where she likes to be alone and doesn’t want to bother other people – putting them before herself, again. It was hard for her to express her own feelings and would always keep a poker face at times, the only way and best way to express her feeling is when she’s singing.

BACKGROUND :

Born as Choi Bieun, Bieun lived in a quite poor family with only her mother working, she and her sister were not allowed to work as they had to focus more on their studies first. However, they were a stable family that seemed like they had more money than they did, Bieun and her sister had no trouble, neither did their parents and their mother would never complain about being the only one who worked. "People use to find it hard to be around me and they still do, in my old school I was never the one to be social and outgoing and I didn't like to go outside - I became a wallflower. So whenever my friends came over they would get bored easily and leave." Bieun never really liked to go outside as she wasn't really comfortable with its surroundings and her connection with people would always start out slow. This resulted in her having less of a social life and lived in her younger, more popular and beautiful, sister's shadow. She was a straight A student. Her best subjects were Maths, English and Science. Bieun had always wanted to be an idol, more likely, she has always wanted to be a singer. Her auntie was a famous singer back in her days, and Bieun has always admired that. She had lived in a musically inclined family, so it was natural for her to want to become a singer in the near future. This was on her father’s side, mostly, because her mother’s side was more intelligently inclined.

When Bieun was a young girl, her mother was a cleaner and earned surprisingly a lot of money for that. When she was at the age of 7, her mother was accepted to teach at a school in America, and because of that their whole family moved to America. There, her father was able to cook and sell his food to earn money, and both Bieun and Soeun were able to study without worry for finance. However, at the age of 12 they moved back to South Korea because her mother, was once again, offered a teaching job there--plus they missed their home country. So, therefore, Bieun knows how to speak English for that very reason. 

Bieun started out playing the saxophone; she has become almost professional-like at it. After, she learned how to play the piano and guitar but she wasn’t as good on them as she was on the saxophone. She used these abilities to compose a song for each of her parent’s birthdays and sister’s as well. She isn’t that great at writing lyrics, but she learned a lot as a trainee. She got into music when she was 10, but started singing when she was very young. Her mother would use to tell her that any song that she heard she would try to imitate it. She really looks up to B.A.P’s Daehyun, Ailee, TVXQ’s Changmin, Super Junior’s Yesung and 2NE1’s Bom’s amazing vocals and wishes to sound like one of them one day. She entered SME when she was 16 in 2014.

Bieun is not very close to NCT or just males in general, mostly because it’s just her nature to detach herself from others, and unfortunately that means males. Taeil is not one of the exceptions, but, they aren’t awkward around each other since they promote with one another and are both main vocalists in their respective groups. He’s just very shy, and probably scared of Bieun.

Bieun is not too fond of Johnny, mainly because his personality completely conflicts with hers and its sort of like fire and ice, but it not like this all the time because Johnny does have his mature moments, considering he is one of the older members of NCT and has trained for the longest.

Bieun has a deep respect for Taeyong. Like, she understands his past and his scandals, and extremely respects him because of how he overcame it. They aren’t close, but they are definitely not awkward around each other. You can definitely say that the two are friends with respect for one another.

This boy, holy damn this boy. Yuta is a player, like a definite flirt and Bieun is not fond of those type of people—so she definitely tries her best to stay away from Yuta. Yeah, you can say she doesn’t like him and therefore she tries to not be near him, but he is very persistent. Like, she’s a pretty fun person to mess with, which Yuta has found out about and doesn’t leave her alone. Bieun does express her dislike for him very often.

Doyoung and Bieun promote with each other frequently. They are, after all, counterparts and thus must do everything together due to that. And since they do this, they are pretty close, and she considers him the closest NCT member that she is to. They do have respect for one another, but yes there are days when Doyoung gets stressed from Bieun’s personality.

Kun and Bieun promoted in NCT U where Kun was in the Chinese version of Without You. There, they did get to know each other and was actually the first time they met each other since they never trained with one another. This one, tsk tsk. Bieun is not the biggest fan of Jaehyun. Like Yuta, he is a massive flirt and a confident man, which are all the qualities in males that she isn’t too fond of. And, not to mention he’s perfect, an amazing singer and popular—everything she believes she’s not. She just not close to people like that, and she doesn’t want to be.

Bieun has a soft spot for Winwin, as everyone does. He is very innocent and pretty naive and not to mention still new to the whole South Korea thing. She does look out for him front time to time in case something happens to him, she’s almost like a Guardian Angel to him.

Jungwoo and Bieun are the same age and they’ve naturally become friends because of that. He was the first member in NCT to be born in ’98 so it was nice for someone to relate to him and so the ’98 girls were there to be friends with him. TRAINEE YEARS : 2014-2016 (Two and a half years)

TRAINEE LIFE :

2013

Bieun started off her journey at the middle of 2013 when she participated in the Korean talent show, Superstar K. She was praised for her voice, as it sounded much to that of an already existing celebrity in the Americas. More like, she sounded very indie, like a voice they’ve never heard before. She used a lot of vocal runs more than any other vocal technique, which is what surprised them most—which is also what she was praised on the most with the media. She, however, did not win the show, but was offered to become a trainee by various companies, and by various: Cube Entertainment, SM Entertainment and Jellyfish Entertainment. Looks like JYP and YG skipped out on her this time.

2014

In the end, she ended up choosing to train at SM Entertainment, mostly because all of her role models and vocalists that she looks up to have trained in SM and have been known to been praised for their vocals. She was lucky in the fact that she had exceptional vocals, however, she was not someone with the ideal personality, in which she did not get along with other trainees or she was not really to be put in front of the camera. Then there was also the fact that she had to focus more on dancing than her vocals, because she was already able to get by with singing, however she couldn’t dance for . However, lucky for her, she’s a pretty quick learner—but that doesn’t really mean she’s good at what she learns.

2015

Honestly, it was mostly just getting her to learn how to keep up with everyone while dancing. She does keep going to vocal lessons and all that because it was a must, but her major priority by now was to learn to keep up and remembering the dance moves. One of the other things she had to learn about with her stage presences and what she was going to do if she was ever faced with a camera on her face. By this time, which is the beginning of 2015, she was introduced as a member of the to-debut-soon project SR15Gs and was in line to be the new member of Red Velvet, however, was chosen for a later project that was to start in the next year, which was IOA.

PREDEBUT EXPERIENCE :

In 2013 she participated in Superstar K, however did not win, but was offered to train in three companies—CUBE, SM, and Jellyfish.

She was introduced as one of the older members of the SM Rookies Girls in 2015. It had also been rumoured that she was in the line up to be a Red Velvet member, to which is true, however she was chosen for the next years project which happened to be IOA

This is pretty self-explanatory in her background, but Bieun has a lot of issues trying to express herself, and hasn’t completely found anything that helps her with this problem, other than, hoping others will just understand that she’s a very complicated person. Though she is relatively cold towards others, may it be on purpose or by accident, if people she cares about asks her for help, she will go all out for them—in her own way, which sometimes can be misunderstood by the type of person who is asking her. Like if you are a judgy person by nature, then you are going to think of Bieun as a person who is just cold and mean to everyone. The biggest thing for Bieun, is having to accept and welcome new members, even ones she has never seen before or even trained with—and everyone knows that Bieun is not good with people. It’s not that she is anxious or anything, she’s just not good with others and she doesn’t like things that are too complicated. This collates with her story arch.

STORY ARCH  : 

Pretty much surrounding her personality, and her strive to change herself from this cold exterior that she’d been so desperate to get out of, however can’t, because it’s just who she is.

DRAMAS :  As of the moment, there’s actually a lot, but it’s mostly on the other’s party part rather than her due to the fact that she’s only here to sing and to not make enemies. But I’ll let author-nim be the barrier on who those people are, so that it suits well with the story~

what would you be doing right now if you weren't and idol? : 

— Right now? Well, hopefully I’d still be pursuing a career in something similar. Singing is my passion and I cannot really think of doing anything else other than singing. Maybe a songwriter? A vocal coach? Definitely having something to do with singing or music.

AHEM... WOULD YOU MARRY ME? : 

— Uh, sure, I mean if that is what you would wish for. But, I am pretty young and we do barely know each other, so it would be good to do that first. Highly recommended.

— Uh, no, no I do not. I don’t really have time to read fanfictions nor did I ever think they existed so I never really tried searching any up. I do read novels, which is probably why I don’t have time for fanfictions. Maybe I should read some after this interview.

— Well, if I had to state my ideal type it would be someone who respects me. I don’t really feel attraction to any random person, especially if it is romantic. I need to have an emotional connection beforehand.

out of curisosity, WHAT ARE YOU CURRENTLY OBSESSED WITH?: 

— I am currently obsessed with home décor. It’s been something that I’ve really loved and I kind of hobby for me but over the years, I haven’t really been doing much of it. Lately, however, I’m able to buy some stuff for the dorms and move things around and I guess that I’m currently obsessed with it.

OH THIS IS JUICY, COULD YOU TELL ME ANYTHING ABOUT YOUR ROMANCE LIFE? : 

— Uh, my love life? I don’t really have one, especially since it is pretty hard for someone like me tot find a connection with someone. And, since that’s the basis of how I’m able to feel something more for a person, I don’t really have any love life.

ON SERIOUS THINGS, HOW DO YOU FEEL ABOUT BEING A PART OF IOA? DO YOU LIKE THE CONCEPT? : 

— "I was, at first, very skeptical about it. I first wondered about the other groups that had many members in their group, and they all didn't end well, so I'm just mentally preparing myself for if anything like that happens in the future. But as I got to know the girls more, the more I liked this idea of being in a big group."

The two met during her early trainee days, Boeun had a lot of trouble trying to remember lyrics and dance moves and Jaehyun was conveniently always around whenever she was in trouble, and so he was always there to help her out. And although she would always refuse, trying to always do everything by herself like usual, he would never not stop everything and help her.

This is how their first meeting went.
Bieun ruffled her hair and let out a grunt. “Damn it! I can’t remember anything!” Bieun screamed in frustration.
“Are you okay?” a voice asked her, she looked to her left and saw a boy.
“Please get lost,” she asked as nice as she could.
“Ah, Sorry that I bothered you...” he sounded upset and offended. Just as he was about to open the door and leave, she spoke.
“Wait,” she called, he turned his head her way.
“I’m sorry,” she bowed, “I’m Choi Bieun and I’ve been a trainee for only a few months, and the frustration and pressure is starting to get in my head, sorry.”
“Don’t worry, how old are you anyways? It might explain the stress,” he replied.
“16.”
“Really? I'm only a year older than you~ But I can see where you're coming from, I've been a trainee for a while and I'm only 17, so, yeah. Nice to meet you.” he smiled then held out his hand.
“Nice to meet you,” she shook his hand.
“Do you need some help? I can give you some tips and tricks,” he explained.
“Sorry but, please don't take this the wrong way, after this, let's not get too close.”
“I’m going to take that as a yes.”

"I've known her long enough to understand that she doesn't connect with people easily and the outside world." He actually - this is not stalking - knows a lot about her, especially how she doesn't like to go outside or likes to socialise so he, whenever he's left with her, tries to do things she likes to do and tries to bring whatever is outside, inside so she doesn't miss out on anything. "I took Jaehyun for granted, after all this time he's always been there for me. I was blind."

INTERACTIONS: 
Their relationhsip is still developing after about 4-5 years. Bieun still didn't like him and he knew that. The reason for this dislike that Bieun was feeling is because she was never really close to people especially of the opposite gender. So, she overthought and felt that he was too cocky and arrogant and plus she didn’t really like people like him - way too kind for his own good and flirtatious. They would always meet up for practicing their vocals and Bieun would always turn it into a competition. Jaehyun would try his best to become friends with her, like always helping her with everything, being super nice to her and always being there for her but nothing would work. People find Jaehyun very different when he is around Bieun - he is not like his usual self where he is playful and all that. Whenever he tried to be flirty she would always roll her eyes at him and ignore him. She especially hated how good at dancing he was. Jaehyun will forever keep on trying to get her attention.
