Left-Right Brain Usage & The Dark Side of the Moon...enjoy ;)

Greetings FAM, Friends & Random Readers!!!

INTRODUCTION:  this blog entry is broken into 2 separate parts...

Part 1:  about the BRAIN and a little bit of psychology nerd behind how & why each of us think like we do...or, how we use our brain and why not everyone thinks alike...specifically, Left vs Right Brain Dominance and what this means to you and why it's important!

Part 2:   about the music I'm drawn to as I thinking about life, my brain functionality and when i enter deep contemplation moods--so if you're not interested, skip it!!! :)

GOAL:   to assist you in finding ways that help you learn--as the beautiful, unique individual you are--to maybe learn more about yourself and the other 6 billion (roughly) people you share the planet with.

~ PART 1:  YOUR BRAIN ~

A couple quick notes for what each side of the brain is responsible for:

Studies on patients with brain damage have allowed scientists to determine how each side of the brain controls different functions.

The LEFT hemisphere specializes in language skills and logic: Rules, Language, Strategy, Rationality, Logic, Details, etc.

The RIGHT hemisphere allows us to recognize shapes and faces and express and read:  Images, Chaos, Creativity, Fantasy, Intuition, Curiosity, etc.

  • Most people are not likely to be strictly left-brain or right-brained - we use each side of our brain depending on the task we're dealing with
  • However, some theorists and researchers believe that there may be one side of the brain that we draw on more, which can, in turn, make the personality traits characteristic of that side of the brain to be more dominant than others.

Let's begin!

In February 2017, I took my baseline assessment to discover if I was a righty or a lefty in my brain usage.

In February 2018, I retook the test and noticed a slight shift.

I kind of expected it, which is why i decided to compare last year with the new year's results--plus it will give you something to think about...especially if you want to track your own assessments :)

PJ's Overall Results:

  • 58% Right Brain Dom
  • diagram not attached it was being a little :(

How to read your results:

  • If you score closer to the right side of the graph, your personality is more characteristically right-brain
  • If you score closer to the left side of the graph, your personality is more characteristically left-brain
  • If you score somewhere in the middle, you share characteristics of both sides of the brain

PJ's Assessment Results & Personal Commentary:

Both your right and left hemisphere seem to have reached a level of perfect harmony - rather than trying to dominant each other, they work together to create a unique and well-balanced "you".

  • ME:  there is nothing perfect in this world, especially ‘my’ life—I attribute this to my medication…seriously, fight me!

Your spontaneous, impulsive, and free-flowing right brain creates an exciting and adventurous world, while your left brain helps you make sense of it and keep track of everything.

  • ME:  world building when I'm writing, I guess—I don’t mind uncontrolled, emotional characters…but personally, I’m anything but impulsive

When faced with a problem or a tough decision, you're not only able to break things down and make an informed and sensible choice, but you're also not afraid to go with your gut when necessary.

  • ME:  I make lists for everything, have a plan plus at least one back up for any scenario know by humanity—and I refuse to make a decision until I’ve had the chance to research all aspects…but if I have to make a rash decision due to time constraints or pressing circumstances, then absolutely I go with my gut.

You tend to express your individuality both in words and actions, and although you're perfectly comfortable running on a schedule or planning things ahead of time, there are occasions when you love to throw in a little spontaneity

  • ME:  individuality was beat out of me in the military—my actions abide by the laws of the land and the regulations set above me—but, when all this has been sorted out I suppose, whatever’s leftover…is ‘me’ & my writing, idk.
  • ME:  naw, spontaneity—I hate surprises & non-scheduled activities/visitors—go ahead, test that assumption…I will cut you

Your balanced outlook and approach to life creates a desire in you to not only understand the world, but to also take it in your hands and mold it as you see fit.

  • ME:  yeah, the first half is true
  • ME:  hmm, don’t think my contemplating world domination fits the suggested category of ‘mold as you see fit’

With both your right and left hemispheres working together to guide you, you are able to understand yourself and life in general from so many wonderful perspectives.

  • ME:  I tend to agree, I like to believe I’m aware of, cautious and respectful of human rights, core needs and individual perspective…

My Notes:  shift of 14 pts over the year

  • September 2016:  I quit my day job due to medical issues--just for your reference ;)
  • February 2017:  First left-right brain assessment revealed -  L-hemisphere dom with 56%
    • Makes sense due to the lingering office manager/supervisory position, not to mention my job was on a military installation
    • For the rest of this year I  worked on writing & researching full time plus researched 'how to' write a book/manuscript formatting/grammar review/dialog/writing prompts/ins & outs of blogging/self-pub/began writing Fanfiction and uploaded to different writing sites, etc.
      • Basically trying to lay ground work & learn behind the scenes info of this new hobby (career?)
      • However, later I started playing around with picture editing, rekindled my graphic art history with making collages and geometric-based visual art.
      • Not to mention my intake of music went from 6-8 hrs in an office to 24/7 while at home reading/writing and creating no one was ever gonna see on the computer, lol

  • 2017-2018:   Second left-right brain assessment revealed - R-hemisphere dom with 58%
    • Again, makes sense due to my lack of socialization, removal from 5-day work week and finally severing daily interaction with the military
    • The continuation with the ff writing/researching/reading/collecting gifs-pics-quotes/listening to music, etc. became my life and a gradual confidence in my writing ability started to emerge in my writing…not to mention my editing abilities have improved greatly!!! :)

~ PART 2: Music for Your Brain ~

Music List:  for personal life contemplation while compiling this blog entry (if you give a rat’s ;)

***Warning: when I'm mellow & deep inside my brain, I'm usually drawn to very lengthy & extraordinarily epic productions of OLD 70s music***

You may ask why?

Most likely because of my high school band teacher who had a serious hard on for this group along with Supertramp, the Moody Blues, Styx and Led Zeppelin--but then he used to keep a bottle of Irish Whiskey in the bottom drawer of the desk he had in the band room…which he indulged in after work hours (I don't think I ever saw him sober, actually! ;)

Dark Side of the Moon by Pink Floyd--this in piece of work is a goddamn masterpiece--for me it's a total brain , ngl…if you love music and have never heard this, you're missing out, so give it a try.

The Dark Side of the Moon is the eighth album by English rock band Pink Floyd, released on 1 March 1973 by Harvest Records. The album built on ideas explored in earlier recordings and live shows, but lacks the extended instrumental excursions following the departure of founding member and principal contributor, Syd Barrett, in 1968, that characterised their earlier work. It thematically explores conflict, greed, the passage of time, and mental illness, the latter partly inspired by Barrett's deteriorating mental state.
