let's look at julien bae at how his fans perceive him. he was a block of stone sculpted to perfection and was breathed life into him--a.k.a he looks like he jumped outta hercules. with the perfect balance of femininity and masculinity. he the friggin' painting of dorian gray.

BOY NEXT DOOR

drop the pretense, and julien kang is just an ordinary boy. not quite ordinary. he still seems to have been plucked out of a hollywood movie, but he's now more of a regular person than a god. he makes lame jokes and struggles to talk in korean but he tries his best.
 

ELABORATION —

tl;dr julien bae is a walking contradiction, although, it is exhibited in a simple way. because of his upbringing--always being compared to his sister--he has become determined in everything he does (you can see in the way he moves--his singing and dancing) while being accepting because that's how you survive in that kind of setting. you shouldn't let things get to you. and you really can't talk back to your mom, no matter what. but by being too focused into one task at hand--he doesn't get distracted easily--which also means that it's hard for him to multi-task. he is as confident as he is shy. after a fantastic performance that he's practiced countless of times, even his expressions, his shyness settles and julien becomes a red-faced, fumbling mess. his non-mastery of the korean language often makes him slow to jokes and he would often resort to body language as cue if she should laugh or not. he's also easily amused than others. his genuine interest in others and their jokes, conversation topics makes him a really good conversation partner. and once he gets the hang of the language, he gets a deeper understanding of it (though, of course, most of the puns go over his head unless it's said often enough). he never gets angry, mostly keeping to himself. the only time he does is when someone is really offensive towards him. he gets 10x more offensive because honestly, he's tired of being insulted when he hasn't done anything to offend them. it's also quite similar but different when a close friend is trying to be funny by being sassy albeit offensive. julien doesn't mind the banter and just thinks of a better comeback--which is kind of strange to on-lookers but is just fun for him. julien is also quite indecisive, he really can't decide for himself what's best for him and tends to rely on others' opinions.

  BACKGROUND  —

it's no secret that julien and his younger sister hélène were are named after places in quebec, canada-- i mean what.

julien was born in a pretty high profile korean family living in canada. with a mother that was a model that has graced the cover of a number of famous magazines and a father who was a well-celebrated musician who knew how to play as many instruments as he had fingers (don't worry, he has all 21 of them). julien had a bit of a chaotic childhood. his mom wanted him to act in commercial ads and had him audition in such even when he was just a little baby. when he grew to be 3 he would frown a lot and that got his auditions failing. his mom finally realized to have her child's way. he went to school like every other kids and got into yu-gi-oh like the nerd he is. his academics were okay, not really good but the kid wasn't really into studying. julien often played one of his father's guitars after school and got pretty good at it. 

hélène on the other hand, his younger sister, was a in' prodigy. she never went through that painful phase of auditioning as a child model or a commercial baby. but even if she did, she'll probably have said "no". hélène knew how to assemble those wooden toy blocks and knew how to walk before she even knew how to talk. when she learned how to talk, though. she was more eloquent than most kids her age. she had some problems with making friends but she didn't lack in the studying department. their mom was so happy with her that julien felt happy for her even though he always got compared to his younger sister who knew english--self-taught--at seven years old! she had always been a curious individual and julien wanted to be like his sister and so he always worked hard to achieve his goals.

at fourteen, it wasn't long before death came. his father died of gingivits. it surprised the nation. after all, he was famous. and he died of bad dental hygiene. it wasn't long before julien got bullied for having "bad breath" by his classmates even though he didn't, really. it got worse and his mom had to take him out of school. after a year of mourning, his mother had halted her whole model career right after his dad's death so by then she had practically disappeared on the face of the earth--cameron, julien's mom, decided it would be best to move back to her home country, south korea, because quebec had traces of antoine everywhere she looked and she couldn't bear it. hélène liked the idea, as well because south korea had more advanced technology than canada, in her opinion.

in 2012, cameron bought a small house in seoul, in mapo-gu. it was expensive to say the least but she had the money for it. it was a new start for julien as well. as wooshin, he would not be bulied as much as he was in canada. he continued his school after a year of break. it was refreshing for him, but he didn't expect to be scouted in the streets while he was going home after school. it was an "sm entertainment" and they manage singers and some actors and actresses. julien wasn't really into the idea, but after thinking for a long time (three weeks lol), he decided to audition. surprise, he failed his audition. but he had this feeling of rush and excitement that was so healthy and refreshing that he got this picture of being a singer in his head. he talked about it with his mom, and his mom was just really happy that he got a dream--because before, julien only replied with "i don't know" when asked about what he wanted to be in the future. she told him that she knew this person from an entertainment company and she'll try talking to them.
