Personally, I think the best, and unfortunately the longest, way is to READ!
1. You can start with short pieces like online newsletters or short stories of any genre of your interests and see what metaphors or words they use to express things. [You may find this list helpful --> https://blog.hubspot.com/marketing/email-newsletter-examples-list]
2. You can also, ignore the plethora of instructions written in Times New Roman size 8 and jump right into the ocean of NOVELS!! This is the most time consuming and you need to read very many to get a grasp of literary tools and how to exploit them. [this includes some really good novels and some really ty ones, and the choice of which novel would teach you the most is a tough one to make.]
3. Or you could just google what are the popular literary tools and practice them! You can even take some free online courses on writing techniques.
4. Now this is what i really do --> WATCH MOVIES! Just like the novels, it is hard to select which movie will actually teach you a think or two about expression! But select a genre that you are interested in and preferably start with movies which have received awards for original screenplay, or adapted screenplay. But then again, there are just too many fish in this sea!
5. An alternate for movies, and yes I'm not kidding about this one, watch animes with english subtitles or dubbing (meh). Now if you are NOT into anime, then skip this. But if you are, then watch josei anime or slice-of-life, you can also go for ghibli movies since their english dubbed (It's a sin, I know) are available more readily and they use plenty of literary tools!

Most of these worked for me and english is my 3rd language. But I found that the more you write the better you get. Hope this helps! All the best!

The couch reminded me of a ocean, the stitching waves upon waves of thread, rebel fabric tuffs stuck out from the thing as if merely being there was a sin to it's creation.

Though, you don't really NEED to go that far about a COUCH
