2nd Year of University Reflection

Well, I have finally finished university for this year. Strangely that time goes fast because it will be my last year until I graduate. I just wanted to say that my 2nd year was one of worst years ever. All the classes I had to do were compulsory depending on what minors we chose. Out of the 3 minors, I chose Video and Animation (I was hoping for 2D Animation) and Interactive Media (the other minor was Graphic Design and I'm not that great at it).

The first term, I had to study 3D Animation, Motion Graphics and Visual Effects, Game Design, Web Application Development.

Honestly, I thought I'll have a blast with term 1 because I had experience with making games, I know how to code and just learning how to do motion graphics. The only course I knew I'll do terrible in was 3D Animation. I had terrible experience doing it during high school and boy I was right. It got worse because we had to use a different program >.<.

After the end of term 1, the only course that I did well on was Motion Graphics and Game Design. Both courses I got a Distinction on (which is like a B). I did moderately well with 3D Animation which is a good thing, got a Credit (C).  I didn't think I would do terribly in Web Development because I ended up with a Pass (D). The first assignment I did I got full marks but the other two I failed. Luckily, they total up your assignment scores and evaluate your mark there. This isn't just the simple HTML or CSS. We had to use Javascript and PHP as well and it was torture. I kept getting things wrong and not being able to fix them.

Honestly, the first term was stressful but it was only just the beginning.

My second term I had ADVANCED 3D Animation, Visual Storytelling, Game Development and Mobile Application Development.

I was looking forward to Visual Storytelling because I wanted to direct or write movies some day. But after that, I'll stick to animating my own short films. This had to be the worst term I've ever experienced. From best to worst courses (not really, only one course was great).

First up, Visual Storytelling. I really enjoyed it. It was like doing films in high school except for more restrictions. But I was fine with that, it was the experience of actual filmmaking and I honestly did pretty well. I made a short horror movie about chain emails. I got a good response from my classmates and my lecturer. Speaking of which, my lecturer happened to be my first friend's mom. So I felt very comfortable in that class.

Now we get to the worst courses.

Mobile App Development was meh. It was similar to the Web Development but much easier. It was a boring class and I almost got full marks for the first assignment so I'm not too worried about it.

Advanced 3D Animation was worse than before. I managed to get lucky on 3D Animation but I did terrible for the Advanced class. I did ok with the first assignment mainly because I got full marks for the written critique and half marks for the actual character model. But for the last assignment, we had to submit a character animation longer than 30 seconds. Sure I knew how animating works so I was meh about it, but if you have no idea how to properly skin the model on a program that does not know how to remove accidental paint weights then it was torture.

Last and definitely least, Game Development. This course was a continuation of the previous course Game Design. Sure I was moderately ok with this except it was a group task. The groups were random and I worked with this guy, I'll call him Bob for identity (he's not a bad guy, it's just that we both are terrible at game coding and great in animation). We decided to create Bob's game because he already had great assets that were well animated. The problem with this assignment was that it only focused on the marketing side of developing a game. At this point, we're expected to know what we're doing and publish a workable game. Both of us were embarrassed about what we've produced and didn't want to look at it again. So our worst nightmares were that we had to create a Facebook page about our game and publish the game on a website. We ended up publishing on Newgrounds. Even worst, as soon as we playtested the game on Newgrounds before officially publishing it, the game freezes when the player jumps. This was 30 minutes before the due time of our assignment so we had no choice but to publish it and leave it like that. Bob ended up emailing our lecturer about this and they were lenient about it. Our lecturer said that this has happened before due and he'll have a look into it.

How I feel after all this (Credit to the owner of the gif)

So after all that, I'm lucky I'm on holidays now. I finally got a job and I'll be working more so I can get paid (to prepare myself for student debt). I can finally work on the fics because it's been a while. I'm just so done with university but I have one more year.

If you've made it this far into the rant, thank you for reading my rambling about life. Now, I must celebrate and enjoy my sleep before I can work on the fics again.

This has been PanmiChan and signing out.
