MY BIRTH. naran was born in seoul, the city of pop culture, to financially well-off parents: her father, a physics professor, and her mother, the head of seoul's crime lab. despite the two of them being busy, they weren't the type to neglect their children and would always make sure to shower their daughters with love as much as possible. naran grew up as a copycat of nabi, her older sister; whatever nabi did, she'd want to do it as well. when naran was five, nabi was busy preparing for a school play and being ever the perfectionist, she even practiced when she was at home, so naran would attempt to follow her sister's basic dance moves. even when the play was finished and nabi no longer had to practice anything, naran still enjoyed doing the moves that she shockingly remembered, despite her young age. everytime a k-pop group was performing on the tv, naran would follow along, finding a lot of fun in dancing.

when she turned six, her parents decided to sign her up for dance classes so she'd have a nice hobby to do during the weekend. since they had the money after all, naran was fortunate to be able to switch classes every couple of years; she started with ballet, continued with contemporary and ended with hip-hop. shortly put, she was a dance prodigy and quickly became a pro at all forms of dance.

MY YOUTH. halfway throughout elementary school, naran's true love was still dancing, however she decided to enter the choir club just to try out something new. with a gifted potential in singing and how much she liked doing it, naran decided at 11 years old that she wanted to make perform as a musician for a living. so she sang, and danced, and sang, and danced and dreamt that one day, she'd be able to make it on stage.

her school life wasn't anything out of the ordinary. she wasn't so popular, but wasn't totally unknown either; people knew her for being the it-girl. she was smart (having inherited her parents' science-intelligent brains) and could effortless score highly during exams, but she wasn't interested in pursuing her studies. her only interest was music.

WHEN THE FIRE STARTED TO BURN. her parents weren't too happy when she told them she wanted to be an idol. they had expected for naran to only think of dancing as a hobby; with how well she did in school, they wanted her to become someone like them, someone who put her brains to good use. but with persuasion from their beloved daughter and additional convincing from nabi, they reluctantly agreed. and so, naran auditioned for sm entertainment at thirteen years old. she was rejected, however, but it wasn't enough to tear her down—she went on ahead to audition at jyp entertainment. she went after all the big companies, knowing that it might be her best shot at showing the world what she's got. luckily, jyp accepted her and her musical journey then officially began.

RELATIONSHIPS

these two sisters are genuinely each other's bestest friend. though they have three years in between, there are no barriers between them as they can share anything with the other. nabi is naran's role model, the person she tells everything to, the person she seeks for advice, and is who she calls up when she's feeling down. although naran's busy with training and nabi's busy with university (she's a law student), they still text frequently: nabi's the first person naran contacts when something good happens. nabi's very supportive of naran's dreams and is her sister's #1 fangirl. they may have their typical sibling arguments from time to time, but no fight would last for long.

heo aejung.

 

twenty-one, trainee.

"jungjung unnie is someone i respect with all my heart. i feel like we really click, despite our . and her voice is a melody to my ears." — naran on aejung.

 

aejung has always been someone naran really looked up to among the abundance of jyp trainees around. for some reason, naran was really drawn to aejung's voice from the first time she heard the older girl sing. with four years between them, it surprisingly wasn't hard for them to become good friends and if they debut in the same group together, they'll certainly be as close as sisters.

seomun haru.

 

twenty-one, trainee.

 

"haru unnie is an amazing person and i'm really glad to have her by my side. although she's older, i feel like i'm the one who must protect her." — naran on haru.

 

haru's like a kitten to naran. she feels the need to watch over the older girl; kind of protective in a way, she wouldn't let a fly hurt haru. they became close while dancing together and naran got haru to open up to her. now they're very close friends, as naran freely expresses her affection towards haru, is always there to support her and is always hyping her up.

yoon sanha.

 

seventeen, idol.

 

"this giant is an idiot, but he's my idiot. he may be annoying, but he never fails to make me smile, so i know i need him in my life." — naran on sanha.

 

being placed together as deskmates in class because of their shared last name, sanha and naran hit it right off the bat. with their similar personalities, it wasn't really a shocker that they became best friends in an instant. though they're of different genders, they're very much comfortable with each other. most of the time they're playfully arguing, but when naran needs him, sanha would be there for her, no matter how busy he is. they rarely meet in school nowadays because sanha has already debuted and she hasn't, but they're always texting each other and sharing little updates on their respective lives.

sixteen, trainee.

 

"this girl is younger than me, but i'm the one who often gets bullied by her. i'm like a puppy and she's my master, kind of." — naran on somi.

 

there was initial rivalry during naran's first few training years between the princess of jyp and herself—they were often compared to each other, probably because they were close in age and competitive in skills. naran was intimidated by somi back then, especially since somi didn't seem so fond of her, but all it took was having to partner up during dance training for them to break the borders between them. now, somi is only person who can make fun of naran; anybody else does and she'll karate chop them to mars. simply put, they're at the level of best friends. when sanha isn't around, naran would eat and hang out with somi in school. somi's super supportive of naran, despite how much she enjoys teasing the older girl.

TRAINEE YEARS four years, '13 — '17.

TRAINEE LIFE 

to say that training was completely easy would be a lie. there were many, many times in those four years of training that naran felt like packing up her bags and going straight home. it wasn't so much of the physical exhaustion she had to endure—endless hours of dancing and singing, though it was unworldly tiring, she could deal with that. she neglected school for training, she neglected her health for training. even with a high fever, she'd limp to the practice room to at least practice a little bit. all the physical pain was just an ache on her shoulder. the biggest burden of hers as a trainee was more of the mental pressure she had to face. jyp being jyp, loved giving fake hope (and also fake demotivation) to his trainees and artists. naran was one of the more popular trainees, being all-round talented and having visuals at the standard of the company, yet the feeling of being inadequate was always there to nag her; whenever jyp came down for trainee evaluations, he would never be satisfied with what naran had to give, even when her instructors considered her on a higher level than others. after a while of this happening, naran kept on slipping off the brink of giving up, but it was always her sister who would encourage her to keep on going. with jyp seemingly hating her guts, she believed that she wouldn't have the chance of debuting, but she kept on pushing herself through training, plowing through immense hard work and passion, hoping that one day, she'll get into his good books and she'll be able to make her debut.

 

(ok jyp doesn't actually hate her. he just wants her to push herself more because he knows she can do much more. if he doesn't debut her, tho, then naran will hate him.)

 

as for her school life and social life, people weren't really bothered about her being a jyp trainee; she was down-to-earth and that was all that mattered to them. naran had understanding friends, so they didn't mind if she was too busy to reply to their texts. after all, she'd be sure to keep in contact with everyone at some point or another anyways. naran had a lot of friends but little enemies; "enemies" here meaning the girls who believed that naran didn't deserve the hype she always got, "she's not that good of a dancer," "she's mediocre," etc. naran has heard about these comments, the only thing that's stopping her from punching these girls to shut up is that she needs to keep up her good reputation.

PERSONALITY

an ambivert who only shows his true colours with the people he is comfortable with, chan is best described as a sassy goofball. has a hard exterior, but his heart actually softens quite easily for his loved ones. he isn't shy, but he only socialises when necessary. he isn't loud, but he's capable of holding good, solid conversations. he isn't exactly hyperactive or so playful, but he knows how to have fun—his definition of "fun" is being a total savage to his group members. despite still being young, chan is very hardworking, determined and passionate about what he does; yes, he likes to play, but when needed to be serious, nothing can break his focus.

he is far from the affectionate type. he's more of a tough lover, finding it awkward to express his emotions verbally, so he expresses it through his actions instead.

 

LOVE STORY

naran is a carat, indeed she is. while killing her free time during training, she even kept up with them throughout their seventeen project days. her bias had always been soonyoung; she thinks of him as the love of her life and upon meeting face-to-face after debuting, he's like a dream come true to her. of course, she's a true carat and she loves all the boys equally, but would have never expected for something serious to actually happen between her and one of them.

it first begins backstage at a music show; while following aejung all around the place, she even follows him to meet her friend, seventeen's joshua. coincidentally, joshua was with two other pals: wonwoo and chan. upon seeing naran, chan was taken aback; he was very much attracted to her and it was obvious from the way he kept stealing glances at her as aejung and joshua talked. naran noticed, making her incredibly shy and she totally avoided looking at him. naran only thought of chan as "so-so" (friendly reminder she's crazy for hoshi) but upon meeting him up close, she found him to be very charming, and it made her heart skip two beats faster.

in the same year, during an end year awards show, main dancers of certain groups are selected to perform together and naran is chosen. with an equal amount of boys and girls, they are partnered up: fate just so happened to put naran and chan together. they were, at first, so awkward to the point other people could sense their tension, but gradually their guards broke down and they became friends. chan couldn't deny that he genuinely really liked naran, while naran simply perceived her feelings as that she wasn't used to having a guy friend that wasn't sanha. soon after their friendship started to bloom, chan was brave enough to start making minimal, romantic moves on naran, who pretended like she didn't understand.

a year or so of talking through the phone, getting to know each other better, and simple greetings when meeting in person, that's when the sneaking out starts taking place. jyp has a three-year dating ban, which is why their meet-ups have to be secret—though naran would insist that they're just out as friends. she doesn't tell anyone about her adventures with chan except her sister, and same goes for chan. when they meet, from afar anybody would assume they're a couple; how their faces light up every single time they look at each other, how they laugh and look so happy to be in each other's company. it was a love that the world could see, even if it was blind.

anybody can tell that they have mutual feelings from the way they're always staring and/or smiling at each other, or how they get lost in their own world whenever they're talking. neither of them make any effort to officially confess because well, naran's still a rookie and they're both still young; if they had a relationship and news broke out, god knows how the public would react. they prefer to stay in this status, where they know they like each other but just won't say it—at least, this way, they'd be happily together.

naran thinks of chan as her prince charming. he's so mesmerizing to her, she really adores him and turns into a softie when it comes to him. (normally, when teased by her unnies, she'll throw a pillow at their faces but if they about chan, she'll just blush furiously and stay quiet) chan, on the other hand, is absolutely whipped for naran and isn't afraid to make it obvious. when they're together, he'll never take his eyes off her, which gets her feeling embarrassed. to him, she's the prettiest girl he's ever seen. he's willing to do anything for her and if people ask him if he likes her, he won't deny or agree. silence means "yes" after all.

 

STATUS during north starz' debut, they are only senior-junior. after they meet, they become "less than lovers, more than friends".
