Korean Culture Writing Workshop Idea

Hello all,

So I am quite a regular reader on AFF in my spare time- granted I dont have much of that but whatever- and I notice that a lot of stories are written set in Korea.

I just want to say right now that I do not intent to be judgemental or passive agressive at all, this is just something I've noticed.

A lot of people say their setting is Korea and consistently reinforce this, but then write something which conflicts with this statement.

I am not talking about the storyline or character personalities. In general, these things could happen anywhere, being fictional and all.

I am talking about fundamental misunderstandings of the country.

For example, the land. I've read stories in which the characters go on a road trip. But the thing is, in real life it takes 6.5 hours by bus to go from the top to the bottom of the country, including breaks (I have made this journey myself). But this story road trip went on driving for days, swapping drivers etc.

I get it. Many people will draw from their own experiences to create a fictional world. But, in my opinion, the result is something akin to cultural imperialism, perhaps appropriation. This is the extreme, I mean. But if you say it's Korea and then completely Americanise it, right down to the food they eat, why not just set it in America? It would be more authentic to the reader that way.

We all know as writers that good research helps make an authentic world. I was thinking of writing a workshop on different topics about Korean culture in order to help writers know more about the country and some common practices.

This includes honourifics and stuff. Some people are confused about 'Hyung' etc. I once saw the sentence "you're less of a hyung and more of a brother to me". Hyung means older brother.

That's all. Like some kind of neat, compact way to see Korea from someone who has lived in the countryside and also Seoul city, speaks Korean etc.

Do you think this is a good idea? I dont want to step on any toes, just give some facts about the place. People write for fun and I'm not judging, just wanna help.

omg please, thank you so much this always disturbs me so much when reading a fan fiction, even down to the simplest etiquettes or meals. maybe I'm too fickle but as someone who's kinda stuck in the middle it really irks me, especially when korean is used wrongly but I feel like a douche when I point it out to them and found that some people feel quite offended by it but really knowing just a little more about culture and language could make it so much more realistic. I don't know, is korean harder than Japanese? cause most j-pop/anime fans can speak/understand a decent amount of it and they use most formalities accurately I started learning Japanese cause I was tired of having to wait for subtitles and manga updates and it was really worth it (most korean-english subs on youtube nowadays are really inaccurate btw) plus it makes everything a lot more enjoyable because you can understand inside jokes and puns on languages etc.
lol sorry for the sudden rant I just kinda stumbled onto your blog.

I hate when something weird like that jolts you right out of an otherwise really good story. And I know the author probably just didn't know any better. I think it's a great idea and if it offends anyone, oh well. They were probably a repeat offender!

go for it!! it can be rather well... annoying i'd say? if authors write false information about something i mean, i get it, its fictional but then again, one does not simply change a fact to something unreal, you get me? XD

There are soo many of those... When i read those things i tend to forget they are in 'korea' and usually kust picture them in the usa because that's clearly where they really are.
And yes, i get that it's hard to write realisticly about a place you maybe never even visited but... Most of the ones i read don't even seem to try?

But yeah, i think it's a good idea~

Go for it, this would be a huge help to so many and it would be a sort of go to if we're not confident in some things even with research. Its a goof idea, you have my full support

Of course you should.
I don't mind reading those fics with 'hyung' or so but someone has advised that we shouldn't try it till we are confident of the meaning and has mastered well the usage of it.
And that's why I'm here to give you my full support!!!
