My tips about learning the Korean language

Hey guys! So I know there are quite a number of people out there who are currently learning korean or who are planning to learn korean and here are just a couple of tips that I want to share.

First of all, lemme just tell a short story about my experience. I used to take French back when I was in grade 7 and grade 8. I failed miserably because french was just too hard for me so then it got me thinking "Would it even be possible for me to learn another language?". From there, I didn't even dare to try to learn the korean language but instead I learned how to read it. Fortunately, I improved in reading and can sing a long to my idols on music bank just by reading the lyrics on screen(like YASSSS)

Okay so like 2 months ago, I started to actually learn the language and it was a rough start for me, really. I didn't know where to start.

I then discovered the site "howtostudykorean.com" and I was glad I was doing fine however, starting at lesson 5 I kind of gave up because it was just too much for me.

But then again, I asked myself "I've gone this far, am I going to stop here?"

So I searched more sites and gave talktomekorean.com a try. I subscribed to their channels years ago but I'm dumb to not use their lessons in the first place and I regret not using it in the first place because it was much easier.

The pros of TTMIK: 1) Super short lessons. 2) Easier to understand. 3) It's quite fun.

The pros of HTSK: 1) . . .

Now, now, I'm not saying HTSK is a bad site. I just couldn't deal with it because one lesson is seriously long but for TTMIK, one lesson in really short.

TTMIK consists of 9 levels and one levels consists of 25 short lessons(I finished level 1 within one day!)

Anyways, my tips for those who are learning:

1) LEARN HOW TO READ HANGUL! I swear, romanization will only make you confuse and the characters are really easy to remember!

2) Read lesson 1-3 of howtostudykorean.com because that site explains the basics of korean sentences(the arrangement and all).

3) After doing those two things above, start using talktomeinkorean.com. It really is a good site and much simpler to understand and use.

4) Have a buddy to help you improve your korean. I have a friend that is also learning korean and we try our best to speak in korean through texts and it really does help me to improve!

5) Say, you don't have a friend to help you then start a journal. I googled on how to improve korean and most of the results said that it's best to have a journal or a diary for you to write in korean.

6) Be consistent when it comes to learning the language. You can just spend learning the language twice a week and each lesson 40 minutes.

7) Practice your pronunciation by recording it to listen to the way you pronounce it. Don't worry, TTMIK have audio lessons and you can hear the way they pronounce the words.

8) "But what if I'm bad at memorising? :(" Don't you fret! Memrise is a good app! Even if you can't download the app, you can use it online(that's what I did)

9) Practice. Practice. Practice. Practice your listening skills. Practice your writing. Practice your reading. And in my opinion, variety shows help! Reality shows help, too. As a head start, watch 'The Return of Superman'. They have captions on the screen and the kids usually use simple korean(you'll be able to catch up!)

10) Read a lot of hangul. Read twitter/instagram captions that your idols have written. You might not understand but heyyyyy, at least you're practicing on your reading!

P.S: Have a book with you to write down every single thing that you've learned. Research have shown that theres a vessel on the hand that connects to the brain that will make you able to remember whatever you've written(Okay, I seriously got this from my cousin and I did what she said and it really did help me a lot.)

I know self-learning something can be very difficult and to self-learn a language? I know it is hard.

But look at the bright side(s):

1) You will be able to listen to kpop songs without any problem.

2) You can watch interviews of your favourite groups WITHOUT SUBS.

3) You can read your idols' captions on twitter/instagram AND ACTUALLY UNDERSTAND IT!!

4) Say, you join a fancafe of your favs, you can post on the fancafe and who knows, your idols might read your post, am I right? ;)

5) You will be able to speak the language fluently if you were to travel to South Korea!! :D

6) To be able to watch K-Dramas without having the need to look down to read the subs but instead, you can look into the actors' eyes and actually FEEL the emotions that they were acting out. Wouldn't that be cool?

Good luck! I wish you all the best!! Comment down below if you have any questions ^^
