APPLICANT #12

the representative of noctis, won yunseol

The adrenaline is something different. He is still young but he can feel it running through his veins at lightning speed. He smiles, his dimples showing, and looks at the man in front of him. He is scared, he can almost smell it. But there is something other in his eyes, something akin to disbelief. It was if he could not believe it. The man is scared, weak, scars littering his skin like tattoos. But despite how hurt he is, he can still see the child in front of him and he refuses to think this adorable-looking kid is the one responsible of his misery. The child’s smile grows bigger. This mission is starting to get too long, and he wants to go home more than anything at this moment. He throws a look at his sister, who is staring at him with an indecipherable expression. Is she scared of him? Maybe. He does not care. He just wants this to be over with. He takes a step closer to the man who looks ready to piss himself. He has heard everything he wanted to hear, so the man does not need to live longer. With a dimpled smile, he gently leans towards the man and touches his torso with the tip of his fingers. There is the sound of lightning and an ear-shattering scream before the man dies, shocked to death. The kid turns away and leaves the room, wanting nothing more than to go back and eat the apple pie waiting for him at home.

Another mission had just ended for him and his partner and Yunseol just wanted to go back to Noctis. As he reached the doors of the City of Darkness, a dimpled smile appeared on his face. It felt good to be home. Jang Hyukjoo, the leader of his guild, had asked him to go get information regarding something happening in Aques. The man had been vague, telling him that nothing was sure but he just had the feeling that something was going on. Yunseol trusted the old man’s magical intuition and had gone to interrogate someone who lived close to Aques’ frontiers – and he had found out something very interesting. He could not wait to tell his teacher what he had discovered. It would truly become a perfect way to enter Aques’ little private affairs.

The male turned his head to look at Wonwoo, who seemed lost in his thoughts. If the boy did a good job protecting him, he was definitely not a good assassin, considering how he almost fell of the window out of surprise when the old fisherman had screamed at him. Yunseol smirked – that was the Wonwoo he knew, after all. As they reached the tower of Sabertooth, Yunseol turned to his friend.

“Would you mind taking care of my equipment, too? I really need to see teacher Jang and cleaning everything would require so much time…”

“Oh, of course!” Wonwoo grinned and grabbed the bloody daggers and clothes. “I will take care of it, go see Master Jang!”

As he looked at him leaving excitedly to ‘help’, Yunseol shook his head at Wonwoo’s gullible brain. Cleaning everything was always a hassle, anyway, so might as well have someone else to do it. The boy shrugged and left for the tower with excited footsteps. When he entered the guild master’s room, he was not surprised to see Jang Hyukjoo waiting for him, a letter in his hand.

“Teacher Jang,” he bowed with respect, “I am here with good news from Aques’ frontiers.”

“You did well, Yunseol, and I will listen to what you have to say, but there is an urgent matter to discuss first,” the man answered with a solemn voice.

Yunseol frowned, “What is it? Something happened in Noctis?”

“No, but in Luce yes.”

Needless to say, Yunseol was extremely surprised. The Kingdom of Light was rarely the home of surprises and impromptu promises of fun for the guilds of Noctis. The boy sat down and looked at his teacher with curiosity.

“We just received an invitation to the wedding of the heir of Luce and the Prince of Aques.”

“What?” the young male was shocked, “Why would they even do that? They are two males?”

“That is a good question and I want you to find the answer,” Hyukjoo stared at him, “We need to send someone to represent Noctis and our guild, and I want you to be the one.”

There was a time of silence, which Hyukjoo greatly appreciated, knowing that it would soon be over.

“Why do I even need to go? The other Kingdoms have always lived without us; do we need to go there?” Yunseol whined, making Hyukjoo sigh at his (predictable) childish attitude.

“It is a perfect occasion, Yunseol. It is the best way we will ever have to get inside this cursed castle. You know how tight the security is.”

“No one from Noctis has ever managed to enter the castle,” Yunseol recited, as if he had heard this way too many times already, “I know that, but there are other members of Sabertooth, does it really have to be me?”

“I believe you are the only one who could represent Noctis in a more… nice light,” the old man sat down and spoke in a low tone, as if to make sure no one but them could hear it, “Luce has never done anything wrong to us directly. They are the only Kingdom to respect us enough to send us a formal invitation to the wedding of their heir. Any other kingdom would have ignored us without a second thought. Even if we have other motives, we could at least present well to thank them.”

“Other motives?” Yunseol raised an eyebrow.

“Of course. We are from Noctis, after all, we have a reputation to keep, in some way” Jang Hyukjoo smirked.

Yunseol looked at him as he laughed, then he pouted.

“But still, why does it have to be me?” the young male complained.

“Wonwoo will go with you.”

Yunseol blinked.

“Alright. When should we leave?”
