the basics

name » Kang Yijun

nickname(s) »

Road Runner #17 — the nickname given inofficially by netizens and JYP stans alike when she first started popping up in July 2015, just as promotions for SIXTEEN wrapped up. Yijun was instructed by the company to keep a low-key appearance and tries not to have her shots taken. Which did, and funny enough, as she tried escaping curious fans, blurs of her image surfaced up the internet wearing the SIXTEEN shirt. Netizens speculated that Yijun was supposed to be competing under SIXTEEN.

Brown long locks of wavy hair with eyes and a smile of a cheshire, Kangjun looks friendly, if not sometimes suspicious. But most of the time, although as she looked innocent and is still young, there's no doubt that she's been putting under an impression. Charming can turn charismatic, and Kangjun's no exception to that. She may be young, but Kangjun's eyes always sparks when she's about to perform, her posture and attitude waving confidence. And nothing's going to change that.

Most of the time, Kangjun's fashion is adding a benefactor to the whole 'attitude' thing. Crop tops and ripped jeans may have been the wardrobe she wore to  add badassery in her 'bad girl' image, but real-life her also uses studs and leather like a royal. Also low-key golds and silver accessories but that's a different thing. Granted she can't wear them everyday, but when she's not wearing either one given by stylist, she would still use baggy tees or shorts and sports shoes with a touch of purse or something.

TRAINEE LIFE »

the duration + Road Runner #17 She's been officially training under JYP rounding up to three years and four months. Netizens and JYP stans believed she was the secret trainee that has been popping up for several months near JYP building and selcas of other, more renowned trainees of JYP. The known shot of her running had surfaced months before and been used as speculation that she was supposed to be on SIXTEEN. Yijun later on denied the statement, revealing that she could not attend the TV show by then due to heavy flu. Not only that, JYP felt that she didn't fit into TWICE's current concept.

the game and its contestants Training has been so far a constant game of competing and improving; a headstart from being a dancer in a dance crew and experiences as a backup dancer for several companies is advantageous, but she knew too well if she kept up a bad attitude and doesn't learn, she's not going to debut in a length of time. She excelled as a dancer, but when it comes to either rapping or singing, she had troubles in the first place, but has been showing speedy improvement as she takes in advices and criticisms like a champ and decides to improve by getting constant feedbacks from coaches. Although Yijun couldn't really make her own mixtape like what Jasmine could and probably do in the future, she knows that for a debuting idol, she's faring decently and better.

When it comes to personality, however, some people could be and are surprised when she can appear very off-handed and uncaring (a case of constant exhaustion can speed up this factor) at first, but Kangjun will be friendly enough to all trainees while keeping a personal eye on how all of them looked up at her. Most trainee had a more friendly impression when they got to know her, but many also avoided working with her. She may be listening to what the trainees can do, but when she demands high quality, she can also be slightly pushy around people and this can throw them off. She meant well, but many times it does causes misunderstandings and some trainees would end up hating her.

THE IN-DEPTH

PERSONALITY »

the good : organized, self-critical, attentive, calm

the bad : private, intimidating, cynical, indifferent.

the good team member isn't the loud ones, but those who knows the members : yijeong's always seen as one of the more 'cool' members of 4G, being quiet, almost always adapt and relaxed. but truthfully, she's just in-tune with her own nature; the little details, the small gestures, the interactions; none of them were lost in her eyes. and when faced with other trainees or members or idols, she's the one to ensure that everything about their concerns and needs are listened and understood. and she always tries to motivate them as much as she could. her attentiveness comes with her being organized; settling priorities, utilizing people to their full potential, and with that, she has to bear through everything. she's calm and collected, being able to strike through bad rumors and had people talking behind her backs; and she's much more determined to prove people wrong about it. and she never takes failure as a slumping card; everything is delivered in high-quality regardless of her mood, and while she doesn't like all the challenges the judges gave to her, she knows it will be her stepping stone to reach better things. every criticism gets her to up herself better than the her before; and she's going to reach it, no matter what. part of her personality gains tract with others, good or bad.

sometimes, it's hard to get rid of bad habits : a past upbringing of harsh failures and rejections never sits well; she doesn't reinforce the stereotype. always crushing the prejudice, she was highly sought (if not respected due to her young age). but being barely 19, she's still younger than she looks and acts. in attempts to do so at the time she's not going to be taken seriously, harsh, straight-up crushing rejections and pain has left her in a sour view of the world. and when she's not careful with being untalkative herself, slipping up would cause disasters with the k-netz. and while she always attempts to do take care of people she's supposed to, most of the time, if she doesn't held them favorably (or had done something effectively making them worth it), she doesn't hesitate to cut them off when they had went straight too far. the indifference had people calling her 'heartless', but she could only do so much before the most logical thing to do had to be done. and sometimes, being too private gave out the false assumptions that she meant evil and manipulation and harm—she doesn't. She can mean well when she's being blunt, and she's also trying to be considerate to others, but so many times words that left out slipping can mean disasters although she tried making up for it. The worst thing she ever wanted to face are trainees with a face in need of a fist and the skills of a mop. Kangjun will never cut slacks to anyone who tries to skip training or being unhelpful to the teammate and will make sure that these people paid for the price by not debuting.

BACKGROUND »

Kang Yijun was born in Gwangju, Southern Jeolla, South Korea, in December 12, 1998. She has been under dancing influence since she was very young; starting from a sparked interest over street dancers nearby a busy district, her parents enrolled her in dance classes since she was six. Never it really occured to them that over the years, her love for dancing soldifies and she knew she wanted to be a dancer since young.

At the age of twelve, she joined the all-girl dance crew RUSH, and not only dancing in flashmob or certain dance competitions, but several entertainment companies started contacting them to be backup dancers. Although she had been there since 2009, Yijun only started performing at the age of 14, at BESTie's Pitpat debut showcase. As far as her being on the dance crew goes, she was recruited just around three years, in March. JYP was planning an audition around then, and the oldest and leader of the crew, Jia, knew that Yijun's potential is not only in dancing; out of the girls of RUSH, Yijun has the star power and has both the skills and ability to constantly improve. Jia was originally asked to be auditioning by a fellow friend, but the 17-year old knew Yijun has the better capability to both debut and change the game of showbiz entertainment. At first, Yijun wasn't convinced, but after a major persuasion, she finally relent and auditioned. In March 2013, she saw the acceptance letter and become JYP Entertainment's female trainee.

RELATIONSHIPS »

Kim Jia — 22 — computer science major/dance crew leader — supporter

Jia's been pretty much the most supportive person in Yijun's trainee life, and was the first one to offer her the big job. Jia knows that Yijun has a bigger potential to show and thus gave the position to her. Many people described both of them being rather alike in personality, but Yijun felt that Jia was much more lax and laidback than most people alike. Still, they got along well to this day and when Yijun isn't busy, will try to treat her for food. (fc : kang seulgi)

Nam Injung — 24 — dancer/JYP choreographer — bickering friends

If Jia's the supporter, Injung is the other twin. Injung is much closely related to her, although he had a much reserved personality compared to her. Injung has originally offered Jia to train under JYP, but when Jia told him to recruit Yijun instead, he wasn't convinced. When he saw her later, however, he managed to persuade her to come to JYP. Injung is currently the closest staff to her and while both of them almost think alike and act much more alike, it's also the days when Yijun could just talk to him than anything else that makes it nice, although she's not too emotionally dependent. (fc : kang seungyoon)

Son Chaeyoung — 17 — TWICE member — friends

Yijun hasn't been there for too long and thus JYP idols wouldn't know her too well, but Chaeyoung's probably the closest she'd gotten between the idols she'd known. They hadn't talked too much, but Yijun knew that behind the badassery the younger had, Chaeyoung's much more demure and surprisingly deeper. Although looking like unlikely pairs, both of them surprisingly completed each other and Chaeyoung found the 'scary' Yijun looking unusually mellowed when conversing.

Jasmine Wang — 21 — 4G member — acquaintance/somewhat friends

Jasmine has the advantage over Yijun that she's much older and has been on JYP much longer, and to be fair, Yijun was rather surprised when she saw that Jasmine had polarising traits in her personality. They grew quickly accustomed to each other, and both of them are blunt enough while Yijun is the more tampered girl. She enjoyed Jasmine's vibrance and felt happy of it, although occasionally she can feel rather annoyed when Jasmine acts without any thinking. Jasmine knew and acknowlege Yijun's wiser beyond her years, but sometimes thinks that Yijun should start loosening up a little (bad idea, Jasmine, bad idea.)

TRIVIAS »

— Lowkey craves for skinship. Even if she looks like she's too prideful for hugs, if she had people doing it for her, she doesn't mind them. On the other hand, she is terrible at comforting people emotionally. She gets rather uncomfortable with people crying, so don't expect her to give a leaning comfort (although she tries. The keyword is trying.)

— Hates in-the-face jokes. Especially slapstick. She tries avoiding to be the killjoy of variety shows, but don't really expect her to react positively to them. On the other hand, memes and witty jokes will at least make her smile. Corny jokes will make her cry.

— About being lead rapper; when she got accepted, she wasn't too keen on singing although she could hold a stable tune while dancing. So rapping was taken as her current group role when she'd seen underground rap performances back when she still busks. She was aware that most people wouldn't expect too much from someone who only trained to rap about a year and so, but she's rapidly improving as she learned the new skill.

— Aesthetics and weakness; money, great dancing, pressed white suits, neon lights, dance floor, kisses, night lights at a harbor, fireworks, the color black, sports apparel, leather, gold, and diamonds. She can and lusts over expensive classics.

— While usually not at odds at any trainees or idols, she had a newfound annoyance towards Somi of I.O.I. The girl is only two years younger than her, but ugh — she knew that fame was getting to the younger's head, but she'd sworn that she'd like Somi a lot more if she wasn't that cocky. She wasn't too fond either of GOT7 when Mark's friends stained their names. Jasmine is tolerable because at least she had more solid reasons to be blunt to people (although if Jasmine does went too far, Yijun's not too afraid to stop her).

— If asked about any idol group she likes, she'd reply Big Bang or 2NE1 (although she kinda left the fandom after 'Falling in Love' era. Her favorite solo acts would be BoA and Eddy Kim.

— She genuinely values their fans, but can have a certain substantial dislike against the delusional, cocky, and all-round terrible fans of all ages and gender. Which really made her worry that when 4G debuts, their fans would be in the crazy territory that loves to attack other fandoms.

— Her first encounter with idols are BESTie. She ocasionally supports them when they had a comeback, even now. As of JYP, he could technically be counted as the first artist she encountered. And then JB of GOT7, who was watching her audition.

— Doesn't watch K-Dramas except for the certain few. Most likely not romance-related when K-drama love is rather ridiculous. City Hunter (although there's a dosage of one), Hidden Identity, Bad Guys, Two Weeks, and The Chaser are her top favorites.

— Is the second oldest from five children. Her older brother is currently 20 years old and in university pursuing Biochemistry major, her younger sister is 16, and the younger brothers are both 14 and 11 respectively. Growing up with four other people in the house has been rather... interesting. For one it made her better physically fighting for the remote control, on the other hand it increases the rate of her being strapped or grounded.

— Was mentioned in TWICE Chaeyoung's Thanks To and has been performing several times as RUSH's crew member, so her face wasn't that unfamiliar either.

— Currently almost entering college for Engineering major.
