Username Changing?

I stopped using aff for a while and obviously a lot of things changed.

I noticed that it costs 500 karma points to change your username.

Correct me if I'm worng, but it used to only be 250 points right?

Does anyone know why it went up so much?

I really want to change my username, but it will be a while until I can now ;;

I wanted to change my username today and I realized that I had to use 500 karma points D: That's too much...

Probably because people changed their names so often? Or the servers couldn't handle all the changes?
