BLACKPINK'S BOOMBAYAH AND WHISTLE

OKAY. I'M JUST REALLY DIGGING INTO BLACKPINK RN. I CAN'T, I JUST CAN'T. ;;

*screams*

so, hi guys. sorry for the really slow updates… struggling to update and proof-read because blackpink had been messing with my head. (and if you're having your preliminary exams like i am, well good luck) the moment i saw their dance practice video, i was definitely blown away. they really have that 2ne1-style concept group, i could totally imagine 2ne1 doing a song like boombayah. omg, i'm writing this while listening to whistle kekeke. pardon me, these two songs have been on my top playlist for the last three days.

i feel like both of their songs are growers, and i personally think that makes for better songs. i wasn't impressed when i first heard them both and now i can't stop listening to them. when i instantly like a song, more often than not, i get a little tired of hearing it pretty quickly. these two songs didn't hit me instantly but i find myself coming back again and again. really looking forward to whatever else YG has in mind for them.

and so here goes my opinion and reviews.

my thoughts about the mv:

BOOMBAYAH

firstly, this song really exceeded my expectations. i really just anticipated a typical k-pop song but this really blew off some steam. the opening with jennie's "black pink in your area" got me feeling like my personal space was really invaded. like, they just swooped in right away. then lisa. okay lisa. LISA. at this point, i just want to inform you that lisa really stood out among the other members for me. she's just badass goddess. her full-english little rap show at the front really got me excited and pumped up for the song. (bad girl huh)

and there's also this issue that i want to bring up. while YG's song has english lyrics in it, SM do too. but the obvious difference here is that most of the time, YG really puts in legit english. (not just random words) there's real content even in the english lyrics that i really love.

jennie. oh, jennie. she is definitely the rapper of the group. the moment she opened , i started doubting they really are rookies. the self-confident that she has – not just her, all the other members too – is really unexpected. they seemed like professionals singers and performers.

and the vocalists of this song — rosé and jisoo. i can't begin to express my profound respect for their vocals. without them, this song wouldn't be. rosé really has a high note going on at a later part of the song that really wowed me.

when the beat dropped, i knew i was going to like the song a lot. "BOOMBAYAH!" just like that —

back to lisa's rap show is lit af. really goes to show that YG really carefully chooses their trainees. or in fact, trains them really well. lisa really has some serious swag man.. while jennie's the classic-af rapper, lisa's that sashay and strut-y one.

then came rosé's out-of-nowhere sliding between the member's legs like she does it all the time. that was really a cool move. props to the choreographer.

the song ended on a well note with major harmony between the girls. which really reminds me of big bang's bang bang bang ending as well.

WHISTLE

to start off, this song is as lit as a missile bomb. really love the background whistle melody. again, there's a hook that catches people's attention. "make them whistle like a missile bomb, bomb. everytime i show up, blow up uh." there, lisa did it again.

the song started with sweet verses by rosé and lisa in the relaxed style that gives a kind of carefree vibe.

then the beat drops and there's this glass-hitting beat that came in, and jennie starts spitting out rythms and rhymes. really impressed with this one.

in totality, the chorus was mostly blank, without much content. which i am content about. because the heavy chorus that happened in boombayah, whistle has the opposite effect. there's the sort of  chilling vibe about this one.

basically whatever that boombayah or whistle did not have, the other one makes up for it. both songs appeal to different crowds, which in my opinion, is really smart of YG. whistle actually interested me at first, until i find boombayah just as enjoyable.

my thoughts of each member:

overall, they are very different from 2NE1 actually. it's just the style of music that's similar – at least for now. because, who know's, they might just drop a cute concept in the future. highly unlikely, no? idk man. but even the group name 'black pink' gives me a hint that they can pull off both strong and mellow concepts.

JISOO

Jisoo

first thoughts — definitely visual/face of the group. in my viewpoint, she has the sandara + yewon look. she's the only south-korean member, which i really sympathise with her. while the other members might feel closer due to the fact that they are foreigners, she's the only one that isn't. which in some ways, might outcast her amongst the rest. i didn't watch The Producers so i don't how she's like as an actress. but so far, i get the feeling she's the only member with enough visual appeal (to the korean crowd, at the minimal) to make it far in an acting career. as for her vocals? i think she's average in the group. not trying to put her down or anything, it just isn't as amazing as rosé's high tones.

JENNIE

Jennie

born in south korea but brought up in new zealand, a.k.a., "that XX girl". she's the main rapper and sub vocalist of the group. i'm not going to disagree because she definitely showed off the former in boombayah and the latter in whistle. she's sort of the "voice" of the group. she has a unqiue rapping style – it can vary too. like in boombayah, she adopted a more huskier (though nowhere husky as all) tone. and in whistle, a more distinctive style (sort of vague in terms of diction). visually, i find her really attractive. in my taste, probably more than jisoo. she has that slight jessi/CL vibe, but, retained her own style as well. which i think is important for her success – to create a notable profile rather than a copy of another idol.

ROSÉ

personally, i'm really fond of any names with "rose" in it. i think it's so cute. i'd ever thought of naming my future little one 'rose' haha. her full name – roseanne park. even her name gives her a classic british feel HAHAHA. her position in the group is main vocalist. i'd got to give it to her, she's really talented in terms of vocals. i keep emphasising on her high tones and pitch, which really is. her unique voice is really one of a kind that makes blackpink ever the more different from the other groups. visually, i don't find her that appealing as the rest. sure, she might just be anyone else's bias or ideal type. but to me, while comparing to the rest, she's just not as visually alluring haha. not even kidding though, all the members are so gorgeous.

LISA

LISA

here's my home girl. lalisa~ (imagine that french accent in it) a total thai babe HAHA. lalisa manoban, also the maknae of the group. i'd got to say she's that one member that has it all (at least to me). she's officially the main dancer, lead rapper, sub vocalist. there isn't one thing she can't do or lacks in. according to wiki, she started dancing at a young age and was part of a Thai dance crew with Got7's Bambam (OMG), called 'We Zaa Cool'. and she was the only person accepted into YG during the YG audition in Thailand in 2010. in the dance practice video and the following debut, i can confidently confirm lisa's dancing talent. she's got them moves. she's really natural when in her element, which essentially is dancing more than anything else. even visually, she's the most charming one to me. i even thought she was western when i first saw her. she's really girl crush material that has so much potential.

(without even realising, lisa's got the longest paragraph LOL)

alright, that's all guys. til next time.

zoey xoxo
