Review of 'Story of our goodbye' by minoshat

This is my first time reviewing a fanfic and being a beta writer. It took me a long time to finally post this review because I had final exams. I revised part 1 and part 2 of the fic, but could not go over the side story (Seungyoon's POV) due to being too busy with school.

Title: Story of our goodbye

Author: minoshat

Characters: Taehyun, Mino, Winner

Pairings: Namsong, side!Minyoon

  • Creativity: I have read many fics of heartbreak, but this fic was new for me. I don’t read many fics where it's in the format of an interview, but the author made it easy to read and changed my view on these types of fics. The author used spacing between paragraphs and at first is was distracting and confusing to me. The use of spacing in this fic actually helps the story though. They were used at times where it was needed, such as a way to build tension, or to make the reader hold their breath for what was to come next.

  • Use of words/grammar: English is not her first language and that is totally fine. Her use of words and grammar were okay, but could be improved. She's been writing for little over half  year and I think as time passes and she writes more, she'll get better. Author-nim, I suggest you continue reading more fics and apply some writing techniques of other writers to how you write.

  • Story overall: I really enjoyed reading this. This was a story that was well put together. I liked the concept of the heart having thorns of love. The story was able to bring out angsty feelings in me and I felt for what Taehyun and Mino were feeling.

  • Some of my favorite lines:

-“Why is it that suddenly all those dreams we were sharing are now turning into sharp knives in my heart? Why is it so hard for fate to give me something without taking away all the things I treasure the most?”

-“I will catch up. Believe in me Taehyun. I will catch up in no time and we will stand on the top, together.” Mino breaks the moment stepping away from me. I can see determination in his eyes. He is burning, after all this is how Mino is. He is crying for a moment, but he is changing this sadness into strength. And he never says goodbye. That’s what we both have in common.

-“You’re the one I love the most...” Mino confesses with a warm smile. The tears are still visible on his cheeks.

Don’t ever forget it.

  • Advice for writing in the future:

I suggest you familiarize yourself with verb tenses. It's especially important in this type of fic since there are several flashbacks and scenes of present day.

There were a few spelling mistakes here and there. If you are doubtful, I recommend you look up on an online dictionary. (I know sometimes people rush to write, but I wouldn't hurt to look) I often look up words myself just to make sure.

Details. You don’t have to write a whole lot for details, but a little will do you good.

In the scene where Taehyun is watching the interview of Seungyoon, you write the part where he searches the internet for news about Seungyoon and Mino. For me, it was unclear as to if he was looking up on his laptop or phone at first. My first thought was that he is using his laptop so I thought, was the laptop next to him? Or did he have to go grab it in a nother room? But then you mention that it is his cellphone that he is using, which is helpful.

Another example is where Taehyun is drinking coffee and Mino comes in saying he is going out. At first you don’t mention where Taehyun is sitting. Is he sitting in the living room? The kitchen? Just small descriptions will make your story rich and have even more appeal to it. That's why I added the part where he is in living room.

Where you didn’t put in these descriptions, I went in a added them. Personally, I try not to change too much of what the writer originally intended to say. With these small details, you get a more clear sense of where the character is and you aren't so vague to readers' understanding.

You did a wonderful job with this story. Keep up the work!
