BOOK CAMP / ALEXANDER YANG

알액산다 양
name. Alexander Yang
other name(s). None. His parents didn't think he would need a full Korean name, and he would prefer Alexander over anything else his parents could come up with, anyways.

persona. Golden Boy
nicknames. Alex, Al and Yang. Most nicknames come from his school friends, and has been adapted into his daily life to such an extend that he's surprised the people around him actually remember his real name. His mother and father - unless he's in serious trouble, that is - mainly call him Al or Alex.

birthday & age. 9 march (18)

birthplace. Manhattan, New York City, New York, United States of America
hometownNew York City, United States of America
ethnicity. American
nationality. Korean
language(s)As a part of growing up multilingual, Alexander speaks both English and Korean to near-perfection. He knows a phrase or two in Chinese because of a foreign exchange student he met when he was 17.

height. 172 cm
weight. 62 kg

faceclaim. Vernon Chwe (SEVENTEEN)
backup. Henry Lau (Super Junior-M)

appearanceAt first glance, many fail to see that Alexander is half-Korean. This is because of his light skin tone, and what has been dubbed by well-meaning teachers as his 'dominant American genes'. He has brown curly hair that gets in his eyes when it's windy outside, relatively smal lips (but nevertheless a very nice smile) and friendly eyes, that all come together in approximately 170 centimeters of somehwat lankyness.

style. When it comes to fashion, Alexander fails to follow most trends, instead favoring whatever he finds comfortable. Usually that narrows his dresscode down to shorts or jeans, American brand sneakers and shirts that are around two sizes too big (for comfort, he argues). To get somewhat control over his hair (or failing at it) he often ties a bandana just under his hairline.

anything else. Since he was 7 years old, he has worn a sweatband around his right wrist, usually blue or black. It isn't because he sweats a lot, more so because he thinks it makes him look cool.
traits.

positive: open, dedicated, jovial
neutral: sporty, creative, level-headed (usually)
negative: loud, privileged

personality.

In some ways, one could say that Alexander is a privileged boy - he has never missed anything, not economically and certainly not material, but despite this he likes to think of himself as pretty down to earth. He tends to be loud and very talkative at first glance, but it's not completely something he alone can control. It's just because he's excited about most everything.

What Alexander sets his mind to, he achieves. No excues. He has learned to always strive for the best, and to never take no for a definite asking, fully believing that it's better to ask for forgiveness than permission. This has, naturally some might say, caused him more trouble than he'd liked over time, but he has never once thought of changing his ways.

He likes to do something with himself - it's nearly impossible for him to sit still over longer periods of time. He needs to move, to feel the world revolving around him, and he usually does that by basketball or running track, sometimes even making very bad drawings of people. He has never been the best artist, but he likes to think of himself as the owner of a very creative imagination, and that's got to count for something in the long run, too.

background.

Alexander was born in and spent the first 4 and a half years of his life in Manhattan, New York City. Due to his father's police joint requiring an outsourcing, he and his family moved to Daegu before Vernon started in school. Here, his father continued to be on about his business, getting a job as a field agent at the local police, while his mother taught kids how to play the flute from their home.

His mother didn't speak Korean when Alexander was born - her vocabulary is still limited in some ways - and so he grew up with speaking English to his mother and Korean to his father. It took him until he was 12 to not constantly mess up idioms and randomly insert words in another language when he was talking, and now, at 18, he nearly masters both languages.

Despite some kids picking on him for his 'foreign' looks, Alexander made friends relatively quick, and was pleased to find that most of them stuck from kindergarden all the way to high school. He naturally fell into a leader-like position, despite the fact that he wasn't the oldest out of all his friends. He was popular in elementary and middle school, no doubt about it, but as much as he liked spending time with his friends and going t the movies with them, he found great pleasure in reading and finding out new things, just for the fun of it. Not all his friends quite understood what that whole thing was about, but so far no one has given him for it and actually meant it.

Now, with high school slowly but surely coming to an end, it's starting to dawn upon the dear Alexander that he has to somehow figure out what he wants to do with his life. He has no idea so far, and is probably more relaxed about the whole thing that he should be, but nobody - not his parents, not the school, not his friends - have been able to change it just yet.

relationships.

Jung Taesoo / Counsellor / 25 / Sassy, blunt, easy to talk to / Alexander actually really likes Taesoo a lot - he thinks he's a fun guy, maybe a bit on the eccentric side sometimes, but all in all he appreciates the counsellor's presence.

Kwon Minhoon / More or less positive aquaintace / 17 / Who even knows about Minhoon these days? Alexander sure doesn't. They've met, briefly, and that probably can't be deemed impossible for the remainder of the camp, but he seems like he's mentally stuck in 2006 and wants to listen to My Chemical Romance all the time (Alexander would never, ever, EVER, tell Minhoon this in person. He likes to keep his saltyness to himself)
trivia.

- Alexander is a pretty okay dancer

- He has, however, no idea how to cook. He's almost burned a house down by making popcorn

- He's pretty easy to get along with, regardless of whether you know him or not. He's just.... Legit a friendly guy

- Talk hip hop and rap with him and he'll instantly love you forever

- He cried over Marley & Me, but he won't ever admit it (a guy's gotta protect his image!)

- Alexander carries a vibe of boy-next-door over him. That's probably why he's so good with dogs and elderly people

- He mantains a B- average despite the fact that half his quiz answers are always just guesses

hi there! please introduce yourself. ... Uh... Hey, I'm Alexander? Or Alex, I don't care. Uh... (runs hand through hair) I'm from New York City, I'm 18 and, uh... (looks out the window, turns to interviewer again, shrugging) What do people say in these things? Doesn't it get bothersome to talk to stuttering teens all day?

why are you joining the camp. Same reason as everybody else, I guess - books, time away from home, change of scenery... (smiles, looks to the interviewer) If you were me, what would you answer to this question?

what's your favourite book/series. It's a tie. Like, I really like The Hunger Games, but 1Q84 was really good, too.

why is it your favourite. (sighs and smiles, scratching the back of his head) 1Q84 was just - I still have to figure out whether it's fantasy or not, to be honest. And, uh, The Hunger Games is just a really awesome story. I admire Katniss a lot (leans back in his chair and stares at the interviewer, who's scribbling furiously) Are you, like, qouting me by the word? (raises eyebrow) What's all that got to do with where I end up? It's summer camp, not politics.

is there a specific couple you ship. Hm... Aomame and Tengo from 1Q84 were kinda cute (stops, realizes what he just said). Wait, don't write that down. (interviewer already did) Aw man... Alright fine, they're cute, okay? Happy now?

are you looking for love. Ah, really... Is this a serious question? (interviewer nods. he laughs and runs a hand over his face, clearly embarassed) I don't know, maybe? Like... You're having a blast over there, aren't you? Okay, sorry, sorry, I'll be serious. Maybe? (He's such a cutie but also in reality a 5 year old please date him look out for him).

what is your ual orientation. I don't know. So far I'm 'if-you-look-cute-and-act-nice-I'm-on-board'-ual - is that a thing?

what do you look for in a person/ideal type. (thinks for a while)... Someone who likes to have fun most of the time. But like, respect is kinda important to... No, wait, not 'kinda' important... Ah, I'm so bad at this, sorry (laughs nervously)

what sort of relationship do you want/like. A steady one. If I like someone, I want it to last, but it takes to epople to do that, so... Wait, that didn't come out exactly right...
nickname. Keeks!
activity level. Probably around.... 7 out of 10? 8 out of 10 on a good day

questions. N/A (not yet at least hahaha watch me)

last comments. So I tried making him really laidback and confident in himself, but if it doesn't make sense or doesn't work out, please tell me (what the am i doing i don't know how to applyfic ;__;)

scene suggestions. ...
- Someone talks to him like polite small talk and stuff, and they mention something he likes and watches him go all out
- "You're reading After Midnight?", "Hey, it's a good book, sue me!"
- Alexander gets angry at someone for something, which is a rarity in itself, and either completely roasts someone or gets roasted
- He gets up early one morning, thinks "i can totally make it around the lake and back before breakfast", and starts running just as it starts pouring (additional: someone sees him and is amused about his drenched rat-look)
