TRAINEE BACKGROUND » Iris auditioned for SM Entertainment at age 17 (18, Korean age) after moving to Korea to live with her father after living her whole life thus far in Guam with her mother. Terribly homesick and missing how her life in Guam was (she was a regular participant in performing-related competitions and was frequently asked to model and do part-time appearances on TV), she auditioned in hopes of having some semblance of normality in her life. She has always loved singing and dancing and she figured that making a life out of it is a good way to go.

However, she soon discovered that the entertainment industry in Korea was different from that in Guam. Initially just shy of being fluent in Korean, she had to learn to speak fluently during training. Being only half-Korean was a struggle for her during training as she felt she ranked below those who were full-blooded Korean and she found solace among trainees who were just like her. The difference in culture also proved to be a struggle as her American uprbinging differed from the Korean one. Her playful, devil-may-care, and sometimes cunning personality proved to be something other trainees took a while to get used to.

She stood out primarily because of three reasons. First, her beauty and looks are unique because she is of mixed races. Second, her talent in singing and dancing shone through right away and she quickly excelled and learned choreography and lyrics well. Third, she was multilingual as she spoke English and Filipino, two predominant languages in Guam. Because of these, there was already talk about how she could be a triple threat and the face of a group once she debuts. Upon hearing this, Iris concentrated on learning to be an excellent rapper, a skill that she didn't have prior to becoming a trainee.

Iris, as someone who excelled in singing and dancing early on, is someone who's very creative and knows how to improvise when needed. She likes to learn new things, whether it's a new song or a new choreography or a new recipe. But because of this innate need of wanting to learn and learn, she can come across and bossy and a know it all, which is a turn off to people who don't really know and understand her.

As her American uprbinging differs with the more conservative Korean one, she can be seen as liberal and outspoken, who does whatever she likes, whenever she likes. Her respect for authority, however, balances this out though there are times she finds it difficult to deal with having rigid schedules and not having the freedome to go out and date. This leads her to sneak out from time to time either with no one's knowledge or with the knowledge of one or two people she trusts won't get her into trouble.

With the pressure of having to be many things all at the same time, she at times feel like she can't separate her on camera persona from her off camera one. When exhausted with schedules and life in general, she can be withdrawn. When pressured, she can be indecisive because of the many demands she knows she has to satisfy. However, once she knows what she wants, rest assured she'll work hard to attain it and will make smart and even cunning choices in order to reach the goal.
 

background » Iris is born to an American mother and a Korean father. Her parents met when her father visited some relatives who relocated permanently in Guam. Her parents eventually married and had her and her older brother but had to separate due to marital conflict stemming from differences in culture when she was 4 years old. Her father went back to Korea while she and her older brother were raised by their mother in Guam. Her relationship with her father remained cordial and communicative, though the distance is an issue.

As a single mother, her mom had to constantly work in order to provide for them so she and her brother were left mostly in the care of a Filipino middle-aged lady who was their neighbor, which was how she learned how to be conversational in Filipino. Many of her playmates and neighbors, too, were Filipino. That neighbor of theirs eventually taught her how to cook and insisted that she read many of the books in the shelves of the neighbor's house.

With her mother constantly working, she was usually left to her own devices because her brother had his own friends and things he prefered to do. It meant that she was usually free to do as she wished. Her free time was usually spent either reading or listening to music, another activity that the middle-aged Filipino lady neighbor frequently did. She had no curfew to abide by as well.

Her mother likes to sing and dance as a hobby and they're two important things that Iris picked up from her. Every night when she was about to sleep, her mother would sing her lullabies to sleep. They like to sing and dance together out of the blue just for fun.

Her first crush was the younger brother of one of her brother's playmates named Jun. Though she was largely wary of Jun finding out, she found ways to see him and be around him. She, her brother and their playmates often went to the beach to swim and play in the sand. It was during one of those trips that she her feet cramped while she was in the water, nearly causing her to drown. She was saved by her brother and by Jun.

She attended a private school that is exclusive to girls for her elementary in middle school. She did well academically and could've been in the honor roll if it weren't for the fact that she sometimes moved her focus from her academics to extra curricular activities. It was during these years that she, upon the encouragement of her family, began joining performing-related competitions within the school. Her first ever first place win was when she performed the song Colors of the Wind from the movie Pocahontas. She also joined the cheerleading squad to see how it was like but left after a year to focus more on music.

It was during middle school when she met her first love, who studied in a different school, during one of the many fiestas in Guam. It was an "are we or aren't we?" kind of relationship and she always hesitated about asking him about them. Eventually, they drifted apart and ended up being just friends.

Her focus on singing and music and participation in competitions yielded many opportunities for her to model and to participate in local shows and perform live in bars and radio programs.

It was a few weeks after her 16th birthday that her father was met with an accident in Korea. Her father slipped and fell down the stairs, landing harshly on the ground and injuring his lower back. As he lived alone and had no one to take care of him, Iris made the heavy and life-changing decision of moving to Korea initially to be by his side for surgery and post-surgery. However, it was soon discovered that he didn't need surgery but intensive rehabiliation. They were also informed by the doctor that his movements would no longer be as they were before he was injured. Her stay in Korea then became permanent.

Incredibly homesick and missing the life she had in Guam, she decided on researching about opportunities in Korea and if there were competitions too. It was during her search that she learned about SM Entertainment. After learning about the company's numerous acievements and the successes of its groups, she decided to try and audition, which she eventually passed.

He feels regretful that the end of his marriage meant that he only got to watch his children grow up through the internet. His injury makes him rather irrate at times as it frustrates that though he can still move and function normally, it wasn't like before that he needed to be careful and mindful of his actions so as not to aggrivate his injury.

Maya | Mother | 48 | Part-time elementary school teacher, part-time real estate broker | Having to frequently work to provide for her children, Maya isn't always home so at times her relationship with her daughter can be rather detached. However, Iris' love for singing and dancing was from her so they are two things they both enjoying doing and talking about.

Rocky | Brother | 26 | Full-time Masteral student | Protective, loves pranks, easy going. Rocky is very protective towards Iris and often has a very laidback disposition. Though he isn't always expressive of his love for his sister, he makes it a point to be present in her life.

Kim Jongin | Friend | 21 | Idol | Kai and Iris meet as trainees and get along well due to their shared love for dancing. Their friendship is a subject of envy among idols, trainees and fans alike with a lot of rumors going around that they are dating when they actually see each other as brother and sister.

Kang Seulgi | Healthy Rival | 21 | Idol | Rather dorky, determined and patient. Seulgi and Iris have nothing against each other personally but ever since their trainee days, they are pitted against each other and made into "rivals". The two deal with it by being rather competitive towards each other though it's very friendly

Kim Heechul | Older Brother Figure/Friend | 32| Idol | Honest, loud and unpredictable. Kim Heechul is SM Entertainment's Big Brother of sorts. Much like Sulli and Taeyeon, Heechul takes Iris under his wings. He is often very straightforward and fun whenever they're together and though he and her brother have many differences, she treats Heechul like her older brother in Korea. Though Iris has always known Heechul as one of her seniors who has long debuted and Heechul knows Iris as one of the trainees, the two personally meet during the time when Super Junior was receiving informal English classes from English-speaking trainees and co-artists. With Donghae's reputation of actually being a slow learner when it comes to language, Heechul takes it upon himself to crash one of Donghae and Iris' lesson and is amazed with Iris' patience and determination as she never snaps at Donghae, no matter how frustrated she gets. The friendship ultimately bloomed from there.

Yoona and Iris have nothing against each other but they are always compared to one another because Yoona is Donghae's ex girlfriend and Iris and Donghae have a thing. Donghae is often called as Super Junior's eternal five year old, which is something he lives up to. He cries easily, likes to be taken good care of and can be moody and impatient. Sometimes, this image works to his advantage. Other times, people tend to underestimate him because of this. He gets along with just anybody though he can be initially shy and slow to warm up at first. He tries to hide the fact that he sometimes gets jealous of other men who surround Iris, most especially Kai. It makes him slightly insecure because Kai is closer in age to Iris than Donghae is.

first meeting » With Super Junior being the international Hallyu group that it is, it became imperative that the boys learn basic English in order to be able to communicate with fans. Not wanting to incur additional expenses by hiring English teachers, SM Entertainment decided to make use of their current idols and trainees who speak English. Donghae and Iris officially meet at a meeting in SM where Iris was assigned as Donghae's English tutor.

INTERACTIONS » As Donghae is shy and quick to warm up, their initial tutoring sessions are quick and basically beyond her teaching him a few words and phrases. He was still dating Yoona at this time and she was still a trainee so there was nothing romantic going on with them, although he eventually warmed up to her and lessons became more lively and progressed smoothly.

When Yoona and Donghae broke up, he became rather moody and disinterested with many other things, which made it harder for Iris to teach. On one particular night, Donghae was so withdrawn that it frustrates Iris so much so that she cajoles him into sneaking out. They head to Han River (Donghae wears some sort of disguise) and they just spend the time looking at the sky and the water. Their friendship visibly improves after that and they become really close, especially when their love for dancing come into play. Their closeness becomes so much so that people in the company anticipate that they'll end up dating. However, Donghae has become wary of relationships after his breka up with Yoona and both are generally hesitant to talk about the real score between them. This leads Iris to be wary of him being like her first love, which basically never became official and got nowhere.

The 7 year and his hectic schedule are also important factors that affect their relationship as well as his occasional jealousy towards Kai, which he knows is immature but at times can't help it. He is fiercely protective of Iris and is very thoughtful towards her, never forgetting to get her something whenever he's overseas. In turn, Iris enjoys cooking for him and, subsequently, s.

Sneaking out is a hobby that they find time to indulge. Sometimes, they just go out for walks or drives around town. Sometimes, they visit places. Sometimes, they just sit by Han River to watch the sky and the water.

Her rather carefree attitude sometimes frustrates him as he likes to play it safe and is rather conservative. They are very relaxed towards each other and very caring. Sometimes, Donghae becomes the mature one between the two of them, which deviates from his image.

Throughout their relationship, everything happens in private as they both don't want Iris to deal with the irrational hate of his fangirls and he doesn't want people to think that she's using him for her own advantage.
