So as some of you may know, I teach high school English. I teach one literature class and two writing classes. Every Friday, the writing classes have Sustained Silent Reading for the majority of the class period because reading a lot will make you a better writer faster/easier than actually practicing writing.

I have one student who's a budding underground rapper. On Friday during our silent reading time, he was on his tablet, typing away. I told him to get back to reading, and he turned his tablet around and said, "I'm writing, can I do that instead?" I thought about it for a minute, and I told him that if it's recreational, he can use the time that way, but he can't work on an assignment for another class during that time. I decided that writing for fun was an acceptable alternative to reading. 

Today, he mentioned it again, and one girl in the class that I know is into anime overheard. She said, "We're allowed to write instead?" and I was like, "Well, I didn't want to advertise it, but yeah, I told him that he could write recreationally instead of reading." So then she says, "Man! I could've been working on my fanfiction all this time!" 

...I just kinda grinned to myself and walked away.
