Underground rappers who became idols

I just found this discussion

Isn't it very fascinating?

I wonder if barring getting some street-cred and feedback, there is any reason why a rapper need to be from the underground to be good?

I mean, as long as you write your own stuff (at least almost all of it), and have a good flow - you can be a credible rapper?
