Maru usually wears a tank top under his simple t-shirt and bigger pants so it wouldn't be too tight. He has the modern teen look of the states and he usually likes gloves to go with his attire. He always wears a belt and sometimes a chain from his front to back pockets. He has a simple look and wears boots most of the time. He doesn't like dyeing his hair so its often the same color and length. He ties his hair back once in a while. He believes it makes him look older.

Though he doesn't respond much, Maru is often listening and remembering what went down and was said as he has a good memory. He's adaptable and is capable of many things on his own. He's cultured and is clever, by tying the two together, he's educational and is a logical and even rational person. Because he's attentive he's also quick to react when something seems out of place. He's also calm and cool most of the time, whenever he gets lectured or yelled at, he doesn't react violently. Instead he pretends to ignore it and work on improving quietly. 

Even though he's attentive and is quite clever, he doesn't have a sense of humor, thus he does not laugh at others jokes and humor often. He can be inconsiderate and frank when he speaks (speaking out the unwanted or not needed truth). In a sense he's sneaky, cunning, and cruel. He's quick on his feet and is reliable as he's capable at his age, however, when he finds the perfect chance to do something considered 'cruel' then he'd go for it. And when he does, he's quite aggressive and belligerent.

Maru was born and raised in the United States in Arizona's Capital city, Phoenix. Because Arizona was a state where most Latinos, Mexicans, and Spanards lives; his mother is then half Mexican and Caucasian. Maru got most of his father's genes and appears more Asian versus his Latino and white side. Maru lived in the United States until he turned thirteen and his family moved back to Korea in order for his father to take over his grandparent's business after their passing. Even in the states, Maru was and has always had an interest in music. He played in school bands and even join dance battles out on the street. In South Korea, K-pop was the new trend and so it caught Maru's eyes and opened a new route for him. 

Maru was recruited by a scouter from Pledis Entertainment.

Maru trained in Pledis Entertainment for two years after turning fourteen. He was supposed to debut with Seventeen but left when his parents were getting a divorce, because his mother wasn't used to South Korea and couldn't take all the racist remarks she kept hearing and seeing. During his parents fight to keep him, Maru made the decision to stay in South Korea. Soon after (a year later), he returned to dancing out in the streets and was recruited by a Woollim scouter. At the age of seventeen he was training under Woollim and finally got to debut just a little more than a month after turning eighteen.
