The demon looked serious-he wasn’t smiling. I shivered involuntarily.
“This,” Jin said quietly, “was Erak the Lord of all demons. He was the progenitor, the father of our kind. Erak was the first and most powerful demon in existence. He kept to himself ruling the rest of our race with power most demons can scarcely dream of. Singlehandedly, Erak created a demon empire in an age long ago. He had it all; power, wealth, freedom. He didn't consider any other way of life than what he had. To him, being worshipped, obeyed, and feared throughout the centuries was enough.
One day, he left his palace and ended up passing by a group of demons terrorizing and toying with a group of pretty human girls. There was only one among them that stood her ground and tried to defend her friends.”
Here, he paused so I could take the story in before continuing, “He was interested, intrigued. She amused him and he was hardly ever amused. He slew the demons, and took her away. She was not frightened of him; indignant perhaps, but not frightened. She talked with him. She discussed morals with him.” He laughed whether he thought discussing morals with a demon funny, or because he was trying to lighten the mood, I had no idea.
“In the end, she convinced him of some morals. But either way, he fell in love. He carried her off to his palace and created a spell he used on her to keep her from harm from any other demon. It also allowed her to bear his children as normal human anatomy isn't made to bear demon-kind. But the spell wasn’t strong enough to save her…in the end”
By this time I was enraptured by the story. “What happened?” I whispered half terrified of the answer.
“One day, a human male…her brother, came to rescue her from Erak’s clutches. He had suffered much to discover what had happened and to retrieve the whereabouts of his sister that had disappeared. He met her in the garden of Erak's domain, when Erak had left on some business (the story is unclear why he was not present at the time) and offered his plan of escape. But the woman had grown to love Erak. She refused to go. She explained her circumstances and confessed her love of the demon king. Her brother was angry and disgusted with her. He would not accept her perspective; and was determined to save her in spite of herself. Because she would not leave with him, he killed her.”
I gasped in horror as he finished, “Blinded by grief, Erak took his own life after hunting down the man responsible and taking his revenge.”
Jin shook his head and fell silent.
“That is interesting,” I admitted, “But what does it have to do with me?”
“Ahh,” Jin nodded, “ Erak’s descendents live on. Every 1000 yrs. a human female is born from that line. If a demon mates her, their first child is always a human (who marries another human and that’s where you get the human female every thousand yrs.) but the rest of her children are always demons. Demons cannot have children save with this one human girl every millennia. If they could, we’d overpopulate the p
