Times

Fate or Coincidence. People could waste their time for just arguing about this. Some said all events that happened in their lives were already written before. Some said otherwise. Coincidence or Fate, Taeyeon believed her meeting with Janhae was fated. Even if she could turn back the time to the moment when she had to choose a country for her first lecturing. She would still choose Thailand. Not Vietnam, not Indonesia, not Malaysia, not even US or UK, just not other countries but Thailand. She didn’t have specific reason for that. She was just curious about the country and its culture.

"I heard it is really hot in there!" Jessica, a friend of her who couldn't live without air conditioner, commented.

"Just beware Tae. I heard not all women are literally women! You know what I mean right?" Sooyoung, a friend who was often exaggerating over small things, warned her.

Even her parents were worried about her choice because They had no relatives in that country. But Taeyeon was sure about her choice. She followed what her heart wanted to.

But who knew she would meet the love of her life on that land. Honestly, Taeyeon never thought about finding a lover for herself. She even didn't expecting any chance. She was still tired being in relationship. All the girls she dated back then were troublesome. Even when she felt she already found the right person, she was left behind for the end of the story. Her parents did a lot of marriage arrangements, but Taeyeon just couldn’t accept it to cover up this side of her. Yes, Taeyeon only had interest in women. She didn’t know what made her like that. She never knew.

Being a person who loved the same gender somehow made Taeyeon becomes more independent. She didn't worry much if one day she would live as forever single, without family, or even without children in the future. She thought it wouldn’t be bad for her. She already prepared herself for living alone. It’s more like a consequence for her. Nothing to lose. Nothing to be feared. She kept saying those aloud to herself.

When she stepped on the ground of Thailand for the first time, such idea of “finding a new lover” wasn’t even existed in her mind. She was eventually nervous, thinking how she should behave on her first time lecturing foreigners. No matter how much she practiced for it before. Here, Taeyeon got her first job as a lecturer for a Korean Literature and Culture major in one of prestige universities in Thailand. She would have fun with this job.

Life was always full of surprises. Some people still holding on this statement. Taeyeon wasn’t really sure or even care and just let herself going with the flow. But yes, life did surprise her most of times. They were often from something she wasn’t expecting.

It was when Taeyeon introduced herself in front of the class for the first time. From there, she met a girl named Ployshompoo Supasap. She was simply called as Jan. The first student she knew because she was the class representative.

Jan was a smart, active, and attractive student. Physically Jan was really beautiful. Tall, black long hair, clean white skin. Definitely Taeyeon’s ideal girl type, which causing her went through a lot of torturing times. Taeyeon always got hard times for restraining herself from not touching her, hugging her or whatever she had her in dirty mind. Being 25 years old sure made her thinking of something more “mature” even God would understand her ert mind.

Whenever Taeyeon got her turn to teach Jan’s class. That girl would always be the active one. The curious one. She could ask many questions everytime Taeyeon offered them another new lesson. And she could answer every questions about previous lessons very well. She spoke korean fluently which was surprising for Taeyeon at the first time she discovered it. She admitted Jan was the smartest, no wonder she always got the highest score. Jan ever told Taeyeon that she really loved Korea. No wonder.

Usually after the class, Jan would ask Taeyeon if she had time to discuss more about korean culture with her. For sure, Taeyeon, being a nice lecturer, accepted it. Besides, she could cherish her time for seeing those beautiful eyes of her. Whenever Jan smiled, her eyes would turned in to beautiful crescent shape which made everything pretty in Taeyeon’s eyes. It made her heart fluttering without any clear reasons. Was it love? Or maybe she was just too attractive? Again, Taeyeon wasn’t sure. It made her dizzy whenever she started to wonder about it.

“Taeyeon songsaenim, since you already told me a lot of things about Korea. I... I really want to return the favor this time,” Said Jan one day in their usual private discussion at the library. They talked mostly in Korean, which sometimes made Taeyeon nearly forget that Jan was actually a Thai, not korean.

Taeyeon raised her brows. “You mean?”

Jan let out her usual sweet smile. Taeyeon would always smile widely whenever she saw that smile. God, was she infected or something...? Taeyeon started to hate herself for being like this.

“Please stop smiling like that, I might have wrong interpretation!” Taeyeon desperately shouted in her mind. It was utterly distracting for her.

“You’re free on sunday, right?! Let’s getting around Bangkok! I will show you a lot of fun things from this city!” She grinned excitedly as she put her hands on Taeyeon’s and squeezed it. Taeyeon felt herself started sweating. She couldn’t take her eyes off those smooth hands of her. This was their first skinship. Something within her exploded, probably her brain. She felt numb. She felt dumb.

“How come this girl...!”

But unfortunately, Jan didn’t take the sign of Taeyeon’s sickness and just squeezed her hand even harder. “Please... This is how I want to say thank you. I know this isn’t much but I hope you will accept it, Taeyeon songsaenim.” She pleaded.

Taeyeon was speechless. Was this reality? She couldn’t believe that the girl was actually making the first move. Wait... No, Jan just wanted to say thank you. Not asking her for a date. Taeyeon started to think her mind had been paralyzed. But whatever, Taeyeon would always note this down as their very first date.

For sure, she accepted it.

After that one day "date", Taeyeon couldn’t get Jan off her mind anymore. It was actually like a real date. Jan didn't even let go of her hand during that time. There were times when she hugged Taeyeon’s arm while showing this and that, seemingly not really caring about Taeyeon’s reaction who nearly died because of too much skinship. She noticed that Jan really enjoyed their “date”. The day was full with her lovely giggles and laughters, and Taeyeon couldn’t be happier than this. Jan might just think it as a friendly hangout between a student and her lecturer. But Taeyeon would treasure it as her first precious hangout in Thailand. She knew everything would turn back to normal again with her having hard times restraining herself from Jan.

But Taeyeon forgot how life could really surprise her.

Eventually, since that "date", they grew closer and became more comfortable around each other. And Jan became more eager in doing skinship with her. She started hugging her arm once they were done with their usual private discussion before parting ways. Whenever they were out of college, they would forget their “student-teacher” status. They started hanging out often, sending text messages, and chatting random things on the phone. Jan even invited her to her birthday party on 5th January.

Taeyeon really enjoyed the relationship, but on the other side she was afraid. They were close, but Taeyeon was nobody for Jan. The relationship between them was no higher than “friends”. Taeyeon was afraid because Jan could leave anytime she want to. They didn’t make any promises. They didn’t tie a knot. They were friends. Yeah, just friends.

The worst case that ever happened was...

...Taeyeon fell in love.

After years, she finally fell in love again.

The feeling of falling in love. It was always beautiful.

But Taeyeon always hoped she could rid off that feeling as soon as possible. It only hurting her more and more as time went by.

Songsaenim, where do you live?” Jan asked out of the blue one day in the middle of their discussion.

Taeyeon looked up to her and raised her brows. “Why?”

Jan bit her lower lip then smiled coyly, “Ah, I’m just wondering... it’s really funny since we had been friends for months but I still don’t have any idea where you are staying.”

Taeyeon couldn’t help but smile at her, “It’s not really far from here.”

“Really? Could I visit your place when I have time? Or maybe sleepover?” she asked excitedly.

Taeyeon went dumbfounded at the sudden. No! This couldn’t be real! No! What sleepover What?!

Songsaenim?” Jan called, tapping on Taeyeon’s shoulder.

Taeyeon jolted up as if she was electrocuted. Jan immediately got her hand off at the same time. Taeyeon blinked and they remained silent for an awkward brief moment.

Songsaenim?

“Ah..Y-yes?!”

Jan closely stared at her eyes. “Are... are you okay?”

 “Ah, I’m fine...”

“No, no I’m not fine!”

Honestly Taeyeon didn’t know how to react. Should she be happy or otherwise?

“I’m sorry to say this out of sudden... but I umm..” Jan trailed off for a moment as she bit her lower lip again. “I think we could be more than just friends? I mean like best friends, right?” she said, looking unsure with her own words.

That was it. She just wanted to be "best friends".

"Yeah, she's a healthy normal girl, Taeyeon! Don't corrupt her!"

Taeyeon finally gave her address out, but Jan never came.

"See?! She was just being nice, Taeyeon... She's being a nice student.” Taeyeon couldn’t deny that she was actually expecting something from Jan. She was ashamed of herself and somehow sad. How come she hoped for something like that. Hoping she and Jan could be an item. Wow, that was really a fantasy, but Taeyeon couldn’t help herself from it. There were times when she imagined them being lovey dovey, hugging, kissing, and more. It made her mad of herself but again she couldn't help it.

She totally dismissed her hope from life and its surprises.

On the next Saturday morning, Taeyeon was wakened out by the loud ringing bell from the door. She sighed as she lazily wore her slippers and walked toward the door, still with her not fully awake mind. Who could disturb her sleep in such beautiful morning?! Sadly there was no door monitor, only a small hole attached on the door. She peeked through it. No one showed up, but the bell kept ringing.

Could it be........ her?

“Oh come on, Kim Taeyeon! It’s not her! Come on! It could be a postman delivering package from Korea! Don’t fantasize too much!” Taeyeon groaned and gripped on her hair. What the hell was wrong with her?! She was literally going crazy.

Again and again the bell kept ringing. “Alright! Wait up!” she answered, a bit annoyed. She exhaled a long sigh, patting both her cheeks before finally opening the door.

“Huh?” She frowned as she found no one was there.

“Look, how empty your life is, Kim Taeyeon...”

She sighed and was about to shut the door when a familiar voice greeted her ears.

“Surprise!”

Taeyeon froze on her track as she clearly recognized the voice. She turned around to see Jan was standing in front of the door with a wide grin. Taeyeon opened widely in surprise causing Jan laughing at her. She raised a small rounded cake on her hands.

“Happy Birthday, songsaenim!” she coyly giggled.

Taeyeon was dumbfounded on her spot, trying to convince this was just one of those illusions she usually had. She didn’t move or even react while Jan was cheerfully singing a birthday song for her. Right in front of her.

No. This couldn’t be real. Taeyeon believed she was hallucinating, she slightly shook her head and blinked, but Jan didn’t disappear from her sight, she was still there, giggling at her.

Songsaenim? Are you okay?”

“Is that really you?” Taeyeon blurted out and quickly regretted it.

Jan laughed, “What are you talking about, of course it’s me! It’s really me, songsaenim!”

Taeyeon was still stunned. She just stared at her then back to the cake then back to her again causing Jan sighed.

“You really don’t believe it is really me?”

Taeyeon couldn’t understand what the hell was wrong with her mind and brain. She couldn’t think properly. In the end, she just sheepishly shook her head.

Jan bit her lip as she looked at the cake on her hands then back to Taeyeon who was still staring blankly at her. Not even moving. It tickled her seeing Taeyeon’s reaction which made her hardly surpressing her laughter.

But to prove that she was really “existed”, Jan had no choice left in her mind.

Taeyeon not sure what was happening with herself. She couldn’t settle her mind back to its right place. How come? How come she knew? How come she knew her birthday date? Birthday Date? What? Today?! HOW?! She even didn't know if today was her birthday!

Taeyeon was too happy. Too happy until she thought all of this wasn’t real.

“Kim Taeyeon, Good Girl, you’re hallucinating. Let’s get back to reality. Let’s... Let’s... LET’S! Now close your eyes! She isn’t there!”

Before she could get the chance to close her eyes again, a pair of soft lips suddenly brushing her right cheek. Taeyeon instantly shivered and went weak at the sudden action. Jan quickly backed off and bowed her head down, blushing madly while Taeyeon could only widen her eyes as her mind went blank. Her heart was jumping randomly inside.

Awkward silence filling the air. Jan felt her arms suddenly trembling. Now she was really afraid the cake will fall from her hands.

“I-I’m sorry...” her voice shook.

No reply from Taeyeon instead she carelessly pulled the girl inside her flat. The younger squeaked in surprise, still keeping the cake safely in her trembling hands. She quickly searched for a table and place it there. She sighed in relief and rubbed her arms, wondering why the heck she was shivering out of sudden. Was it because she just spontaneously kissed her lecturer? What the hell she just did?! Jan had no idea. She closed her eyes as she had no strength left for turning around to face Taeyeon, who was indeed standing behind her.

Meanwhile, Taeyeon was waiting for her to turn around or at least say something. But the girl didn’t even move and just hung her head low.

Again, awkward silence slipping in. Both of them were thinking hard on what to say before everything could turn more awkward.

“Ah, Jan, h-here sit, I-I will make you drink!” Taeyeon stuttered, trying to melt the atmosphere before quickly walking to the kitchen counter which was just few feet away from the dining table.

As Taeyeon left, Jan finally moved from her spot as she took off her rucksack and carefully placed it on the dining table before taking a seat. She stared at the cake and sighed, looking down at her lap.

Meanwhile Taeyeon was trying hard to act normally like she used to, but that weird feeling couldn’t easily get away from her. She exhaled heavy sighs again and again, restraining herself from not peeking on the other girl over her shoulder. Jan was sitting with her back facing her while Taeyeon was making the drink also with her back facing her. They were giving back to each other and the awkward silence couldn’t stop laughing at them.

Taeyeon finished making the drink and sighed. She closed her eyes and touched on the spot where Jan just kissed her. It was real. She just kissed her. The girl she loved just kissed her.

“Could it be...?” Taeyeon weakly shook her head. “Taeyeon, a friend kissing you on cheek is a normal thing, right? Don’t expect anything, please.”

Right, she shouldn’t expect anything because it would only hurt her more.

She sighed as she took the drink and forced her feet to be able to walk back to the girl, who was still sitting there, waiting.

“Here, please make yourself comfortable.” She put the tall glass in front of Jan, close to the birthday cake. Taeyeon looked at the food and her heart sank. She knew she shouldn’t expect anything but she couldn’t help it. She was curious. Really curious on what exactly Jan felt toward her.

“Does she feel the same? Oh, Come on! Should I ask?! Oh no! Come on! Come on!”

Out of realization Taeyeon let out another long sigh which was noticed by the younger girl. Jan turned and looked up to her. Their eyes met. And Taeyeon never saw that kind of stare from Jan. She was staring sternly at her, looking annoyed and hurt.

Again, Taeyeon was puzzled. She really didn’t get it. She didn’t get the message that Jan was sending. Was she really trying to play with her?

Jan sighed as she finally stood up, never breaking their eye contact. She put her hands on Taeyeon’s shoulders and carefully pushed her down on to the chair. Taeyeon looked up at her questioningly.

But her question was finally answered as Jan lowered herself and planted a kiss on her lips. Taeyeon was taken aback once again as she opened her eyes wide. She felt Jan's delicate hand tracing her jaw line as she deepened the kiss. Taeyeon slowly gave in as she shut her eyes and cupped Jan's cheeks, kissing her back. If this was really a dream, she didn’t want to wake up.

Two minutes passed and they were drowned by the kiss as it got more passionate. Jan was now sitting on Taeyeon’s lap with her arms circling the older’s neck. They just couldn’t stop and do it again and again until they were out of breath. Jan quickly burried her face on to Taeyeon’s shoulder, panting as she hugged her.

“I’m sorry.” She whispered.

Taeyeon carefully pulled the girl so she could face her but the younger quickly threw her gaze away, blushing madly. Taeyeon couldn’t help but chuckle. She finally knew and Jan didn’t have to say that.

“It’s not funny!” Jan pouted as she lightly smacked on Taeyeon’s arm, only making the older laughed more. Taeyeon pulled Jan in another hug and caressed her back.

“I love you...” She finally said those words. All those heavy thoughts were suddenly fading away from her mind.

“I was waiting for you to say that...” the younger sighed as she hugged her tighter, “Can’t you say it earlier? I thought all my efforts were going to be wasted.”

“You made me like a fool. You made me crazy. That’s why I couldn’t say anything,” Taeyeon sighed as she slumped herself deeper in Jan's embrace.

Jan giggled as she put her forehead against hers, “Really?”

Taeyeon chuckled as she pecked on her lips again, “So this was all your plan?”

Jan bit her lower lip, “I almost died waiting for this day to come.”

Taeyeon widened her eyes in disbelief before grinning widely, laughing. “Really? I never saw this would come.”

Jan giggled again as she pinched on her nose when she remembered something, “Ah, I almost forgot.” She got up from Taeyeon’s lap and took out something from her pocket. A blindfold. Before Taeyeon could even react, Jan quickly put a finger on her lips.

“Sssh.” Taeyeon obeyed and let Jan blindfolding her. She then heard the younger was busy with things, running here and there with clank noises.

“Done!” she cheered as she pulled down the blindfold. Taeyeon opened in surprise at what she was seeing on the table. A bowl of seaweed soup and the other foods were set neatly in front of her. Typical Korean food set for birthday celebration.

Taeyeon turned to Jan as she pointed all the foods. “You... cooked all of this?”

The girl giggled as she put her arms around Taeyeon’s neck and kissed her on the cheek, “Happy Birthday, Kim Taeyeon-ssi.”

Taeyeon jolted up from her sleep when something suddenly bumped on to her stomach. She groaned and heard cute giggle echoing in the room. Taeyeon opened her eyes in half to see a toddler girl crawling up to her chest, still giggling.

“Eomma! Wake up wake up wake up!” the little girl yelled, hitting on the comforter continously.

“Aaah, eomma is still sleepy~ eomma wants to sleep more~” Taeyeon slurred, pulling the blanket up to cover her face.

The little girl puffed her cheek and tried hard to pull the blanket, “Noooo! Nayeon eownni will mad! Nayeon eownni will mad! I’m scarewd!”

Taeyeon chuckled as she peeked at the struggling toddler. She let the kid keep pulling her blanket for a moment before she suddenly got up and hugged her.

“Gotcha!” The little girl squealed as they fell back to the bed, laughing and rolling on the bed together.

“Ya, Kim Haeyeon! You didn’t hear what eonni say?”

Both of them looked up to a girl who was standing near the door with her hands on hips. The toddler immediately got up with guilty expression but Taeyeon pulled her back. “No Haeyeon-ah, don't listen to eonni, let’s sleep with eomma.”

“Oh! I won’t let it happen!” the girl immediately jumped on to the bed, tickling the mother. Taeyeon laughed hard, the girl could kill her if she continued it.

“Yah! Is that how you wake your mother up?!” Taeyeon panted.

“Ah I woke you up several times already, eomma!” The teen girl got up and sat on the edge of the bed, pulling Taeyeon’s hand. “Quick! Let’s have breakfast!”

“Alriiiight~!” Taeyeon lazily got up then looked at her youngest child. Haeyeon got up and climbed on Taeyeon’s back as she giggled. They went to the dining room and Taeyeon stopped on her track. She sighed then chuckled as she saw a big bowl of seaweed soup was placed on the dining table. “Oh, God...”

Nayeon, her eldest daughter, sighed as she hugged her mother, “How come you often forget your birthday while me and mae couldn’t forget at all?” she chuckled, “Happy Birthday, eomma.” She then turned to her little sister, who was still on Taeyeon’s back. She smiled then picked her up, “And happy birthday for you too, Haeyeon-ah.” She kissed her cheek causing the little girl giggled. She then turned back to her mother who was staring blankly at nowhere. Tears were welling up in her eyes. Nayeon sighed as she put Haeyeon on her seat then hugged Taeyeon back.

“You can cry. But not for the whole day, promise me?” Her voice cracked. She couldn’t help but also tear up. Taeyeon chuckled as she wiped off her own tears then Nayeon’s before embracing her.

“I promised. Thank you very much, sweety.” She her hair and kissed her forehead. “Let’s have breakfast now, shall we?”
