Midnight Memories

*****

It's past midnight. I lay on my bed in the darkness, turned away from the only source of light, the street lamp outside. The chrome coloured rays streaming in through the windows made the room look eerie but I like it. I stare at the wall in front of me, music playing in my ears, waiting for something to happen. I can't sleep.

A sigh escapes my lips. Just when I'm about to get up and walk downstairs, hoping to grab something to eat, my phone vibrates. I look at it.

From: Myung
Time: 00:59AM

Hey, you awake?

I frown as I type in a reply saying I am awake. It's weird he's texting me now, quite late at night even. It's been a while since we last spoke, almost a year. We used to be quite close; hanging out during lunch, going out to arcades after class, doing what friends do. But something happened, I'm still not sure what, and he started ignoring me. It didn't show much in the beginning since he had reasons; he'd blame basketball practice, his friends, some other stuff I don't remember. But then he even stopped saying hi when we crossed each other in the hallways. It hurt at first, but then I decided not to bother. People change. Sometimes it's not my place to know why. And sometimes I just don't care anymore.

My phone vibrates again.

From: Myung
Time: 01:02AM

'Sup?

I stare at my phone. I type the first thing that comes to my mind and click send.

To: Myung
Time: 01:04AM

What do you want

I make my way downstairs, my face still scrunched up in a frown. Honestly, what the hell does he think he's doing? I'm not really the type to whine over stuff like this; as I said before, people change. But just randomly texting me in the middle of night, saying "'Sup?" He obviously wants something.

As I grab a glass and pour myself some water, my phone makes my shake. I mean, vibrate. I pull it out from my back pocket.

From: Myung
Time: 01:06AM

Can't I ask my friend what's up without wanting something?

To: Myung
Time: 01:07AM

No. And I'm not really your friend

From: Myung
Time: 01:08AM

Is my name still Myung on your phone?

I drown the glass of water and go back upstairs, forgetting about food.

To: Myung
Time: 01:09AM

...maybe...

From: Myung
Time: 01:10AM

I know it is. So, you're my friend, k? K.

To: Myung
Time: 01:11AM

That doesn't make much sense

From: Myung
Time: 01:12AM

Ah, to you, maybe. Since you're so stu- I mean, sleepy. You must be sleepy (:

I jump onto my bed and snuggling into the covers. I just noticed how cold it really is.

To: Myung
Time: 01:13AM

._.
I don't like you very much.
Anyway, what did you really want, really.

From: Myung
Time: 01:15AM

I know.
Can I call you?

Now, I'm kind of annoyed. I don't know why, but I feel like punching him in the face. Who does he think he is? He can't just ignore me for like a year and then suddenly, one night just want to talk to me? It doesn't work that way.

I'm about to type in "No" when my phone goes off, telling me someone's calling me.

Myung.

I take the call and put the phone to my ear.

"I was going to say no. " I say into the phone.

He lets out a low chuckle. "Well, hello to you too."

"Don't hello me." I scowl at the ceiling as if maybe he could see my face.

"Hello." I can hear him grinning.

"I'm hanging up."

"No, wait!"

"What?" Annoyance laced my voice.

"I just want to talk." I hear him sigh. I sigh as well.

"Fine, what do you want to talk about?"

"Uh..." He pauses, clears his throat and says,"How was your day?"

"It just started about an hour ago, so I'm not really sure." I can almost imagine him staring at me, deadpan.

"Don't be a smartass." He says, about a minute of silence later.

"I can't help it, it comes naturally to me." I smirk to myself.

Another minute of silence and I laugh. "Alright, fine. My day was normal. What about yours?"

"Just normal?"

"Yeah. How was your da-"

"Why just normal?"

I don't answer for a while because I think why my day was just normal. Before I can think of a valid answer he groans, "Oh god, I hope you haven't fallen asleep already."

I let out a chuckle. "I'm still here. I'm not sure why my day was just normal. But anyway, how was your day?"

"My day... I don't know either. Just normal."

"Our lives ."

"Yeah. So boring."

"Sometimes I like it that way, though." I say, thinking about how he hadn't changed at all.

"Yeah? Why? Don't you want some change?" He was always the curious type. I remember when he got kicked out of class in the fourth grade because he asked too many questions the teacher couldn't answer. She didn't like him very much to begin with.

"Maybe change would be good. But I think I'd rather have a plain life. I don't have to waste too much energy on things that won't really matter that way. Change is tiring. " I shrug. But then I realize he can't see me and a small smile makes its way onto my lips.

"You're so lazy."

I laugh, "Like you're not."

"We're talking about you here, don't bring me in." I can hear that he's grinning, in his voice.

I eye at the clock; 01:45AM

I realize how pointless this conversation is. But l can't help it. We spend talking for another two hours (about pointless things I don't remember), when I fall asleep on him talking. But I'm conscience enough to hear what he says before he hangs up.

"I've missed you, Sulhee."
