EXCERPT: "You shouldn't be here," Jackson says and he's playing with his cigarette. He's poking the tip of his shoe with it. "Haven't you heard about me?" He asks after some time with a little smile on his face.
Mark watches him- -the scar on his left cheek, a scar that is as big as Mark's thumb, the guy's features. He looks so calm.
"I did," Mark replies and then he adds, "I heard a lot about you."
Jackson chuckles at his answer. "Oh yeah?" He sounds amused. His fingers let the cigarette on the ground. Mark momentarily stays looking at it. He looks up only when Jackson starts talking again. "And what do you know about me? Let's hear it."
The smile is still there. It seems a little bit different now, though. As if it is there to test Mark, a smile that Jackson is putting on because he wants to know if Mark would have the guts to spill what he knows about Jackson. It isn't the previous one. This smile is challenging. Threatening, Mark thinks later on.
He stays eyeing Jackson back, conflicted about what to do.
"It's nothing, then?" Jackson says in a mocking tone. "Figures."
Mark is taken aback when Jackson suddenly gets up and starts to walk away from him.
"They said that you're that guy who screwed a thirteen year old boy. That his parents asked you to look after him and when they came back they found you ing their son- -that your face was drenched in blood because the boy's father wanted to kill you. That your parents refused to let you walk inside their house and that you're living with your uncle. You tried to kill yourself because you were tired of your life." The last sentence is barely audible. He stares at Jackson's unmoving back for awhile.
Mark is beginning to scold himself from blurting everything out, but then he sees Jackson shake his head.
"I never tried to kill myself."
