Parallelism
I Know EnglishWhat is parallelism?
- "This principle, that of parallel construction, requires that expressions of similar content and function should be outwardly similar. The likeness of form enables the reader to recognize more readily the likeness of content and function..." -The Guide to Grammar and Writing [Capital Community College Foundation].
- Parallel structure means using the same pattern of words to show that two or more ideas have the same level of importance. This can happen at the word, phrase, or clause level. -Purdue Online Writing Lab [Purdue University].
In other words, balancing the forms of the words in the sentences.
Examples:
- -ing words/ gerunds: Running and to hike are.... --> Running and hiking are
- infinitives/ to __: She likes to sing, write, and reading... --> to sing, to write, and to read... OR to sing, write, and read...
- I will swim and dancing... --> I will swim and dance
- Clauses: that you should stand, that you should sit, and to bow --> that you should stand, sit, and bow... OR that you should stand, that you should sit, and that you should bow...
Really short update! :) I hope that made sense... Any questions? :)
