“It doesn’t make sense, even in Physics it states that opposite attracts, why in the world would you want someone like you.”, Hyukjae throws out the words as he takes a mouthful of his garlic bread, eyes on the wide school field where the soccer varsity team is practicing.

Donghae laughs, casually wiping the crumbs on the side of his best friend’s lips.

“First it’s from Chemistry and second, I don’t see anything wrong with that.”, he says coolly, getting surprised when Hyukjae suddenly prods his arm, pushing him a little too forceful that he ends up fumbling slightly on the bleacher. Hyukjae’s quick to pull him back though.

“Ya you shouldn’t be saying something… ludicrous like that!”, Hyukjae exclaims, and Donghae chuckles because Hyukjae looks a little flush, guilty because he had shoved him too hard he could have been hurt. He shakes his head when Hyukjae asked him if he really is, nevertheless.

“You’re reacting as if it’s that awful, homophobic much?”, he teases and Hyukjae snorts, getting back to his garlic bread.

“It doesn’t have anything to do with fear or hatred, it’s just that boys are for girls and girls are for boys. God Himself even said so.”

“Oh, so our Hyukjae’s preaching words of God now.”, Donghae ridicules even more, a sly grin on his face. “Please do tell me if you plan to sever ties with me and start hanging out with Siwon.” He laughs even more when Hyukjae punches his arm, pushing him seriously this time until he has no choice but to stand up or else he’ll fall.

“Can we just stop this nonsense? Talking about this creeps the hell out of me, really.” Hyukjae utters with a shudder as if to emphasize his point.

“What? You being friends with Siwon?”, the other says with a grin but gestures he’ll stop when Hyukjae shoots him a scowl. Donghae quietly sits back beside his best friend, eyes back on the running athletes on the field, mind’s drifting somewhere else.

“You’re just being overly sensitive when we found out about Jaejoong.”, Donghae speaks and the noises Hyukjae makes while sipping his strawberry milk stops.

“I heard he’s dropping out of school.”, the brunette keeps on, sneaking a peek on Hyukjae’s expression with his peripheral vision. The black-haired boy remains nonchalant though.

“No one even stands for him. Not even his friends.”, Donghae says, his hold on his water bottle tightening without him noticing.

“Well.. I guess it’s one of the consequences. I mean.. he should have stopped it, like suppressed it even before it consumed him.”, Hyukjae answers back and quirks an eyebrow when Donghae scoffs.

“What’s funny?”, he asks, elbowing the younger slightly but Donghae just shakes his head.

“So what if, if.. you found out one of our friends is like Jaejoong?”

“Stop talking nonsense, Hae.”

“No it’s just a situation. What if.. what if it’s me? What if you found out I’m gay..”, Hyukjae’s breath hitches, avoiding Donghae’s gaze as he shows signs of discomfort. “Are you going to turn your back on me?”

 

Hyukjae dares to meet his eyes, only to shift it back to the field again because he finds Donghae’s blank face quite disturbing. He doesn’t even know why they’re having this kind of conversation, on why they even bring up the news about that boy in Class A who admitted he’s gay. He’s not even their friend. It takes quite a while; Hyukjae gulps quite a few times, before shrugging and looking back to Donghae. He doesn’t even know why he finds it hard to respond.

 

“Why would I even think of that? I mean, it’s not like you’re gay, right?”, he asks, and he knows he shouldn’t hesitate or doubt because he knows Donghae is a boy who perfectly knows his gender and preference. Just like him. “You’re normal, right?”

 

When a soft smile graces Donghae’s lips, Hyukjae isn’t sure if he should fret or relax, doesn’t know why he should worry in the first place. It’s not like he doesn’t know his own best friend.

 

A soft sigh of relief comes out however when Donghae replies.

“Of course Hyukjae. I am normal just as everyone else.” Donghae smiles and Hyukjae grins back, hitting him softly for no reason at all. Hyukjae isn’t really sure why he’s feeling so happy and relieved, but he succumbs to the feeling as he wraps an arm around his best friend’s shoulder, hauling him closer because he just feels like it.

 

Donghae laughs and jokes around Hyukjae, grinning and making fun of the athletes by themselves. When Hyukjae leans a little too close, Donghae freezes momentarily, but he’s quick to recover because he fears Hyukjae will notice. When Hyukjae offers his hand to help him stand up, he ignores the chills upon the touching of their skin, calming his raging heart, afraid that Hyukjae will hear. When they walk back to class, he joins Hyukjae in checking the pretty girls out, comparing and cooing here and there because that’s how boys their age do.

 

Donghae’s normal, Hyukjae said so.

And for him, he’ll be.
