“I-I-I think that I like you…..like more than a friend.”

Working It Out

Key didn’t know when he had started to like boys, but he could guess that it was close to the time he had met his best friend, Kim Jonghyun. He also didn’t know when he had started to fall for his hyung, but he knew it was way past stopping it now.

Key and Jonghyun had been best friends since they both became trainees for the same company. They practiced together, hung out together, and were even lucky enough to be signed to the same band.

But Key soon became jealous of his other band mates relationship with Jonghyun. He envied all of the moments that he shared with the other members. That was when Key realized this was much more than a friendship to him, while he knew Jonghyun did not feel the same way.

It wasn’t long before the members of the SHINee started to notice a change in Key, especially Jonghyun. He became more distant from Jonghyun, trying to avoid any chance for awkward interaction. He darted any possibility for them to be alone, knowing that Jonghyun would want to talk about their new found state of avoidance.

But Key could only hide for so long until Jonghyun cornered him one night on the backstage of Inkigayo .

SHINee had just finished their performance and they headed backstage to change into back into their street clothes. They were all exhausted from the stage and had to drag their feet to get back to their dressing room. Jonghyun figured this was the perfect time to confront Key, when he knew that the diva would be unable to run away.

After all the members had changed their clothes, SHINee decided to go visit Boa-noona before they left, to congratulate her on her win. But before Key could walk out the door, he was pulled by the older boy, as Jonghyun quickly shut and locked the door.

“Why are you treating me like this?” Jonghyun said, grabbing Key’s wrist to get his full attention.

“I don’t know what you are talking about.” Key mumbled, caught off guard by the suddenly assertive Jonghyun.

“Don’t give me that , Key. You have been pouting around for the last two weeks, but you won’t tell anyone what you are mad about. How are we supposed to work together as a family if you won’t even talk to us? How are we supposed to solve our problems if you won’t talk me? We were best friends and now you treat me like I am a stranger. What did I do? I want to fix it.” Jonghyun shouted, gasping for air by the end and still squeezing tightly on the younger boy’s wrists.

Jonghyun was not the type in start confrontational conversations, especially with diva Key. Key understood that this was really bothering Jonghyun. It hurt to know that he was hurting someone that he cared so much about.

Key could not respond, he only began to weep. He began to weep because he then knew that his feelings for his best friend were way past that level now. The whole time Jonghyun was yelling, all Key could think about was kissing him. He wanted to grab the back of his neck and pull him into a deep, passionate kiss, which neither of them would ever forget. He just wanted to tell Jonghyun the real reason he has been distant, but he didn’t know if he had the strength.

After much silence and awkward staring, Key finally mumbled, “I-I-I think that I like you…..like more than a friend.”

Jonghyun’s eyes grew wide with shock. That was not the response he thought he was going to get, but it didn’t really bother him either. He had always seen Key as a close friend, but did he ever see him as anything more than that?

Jonghyun let go of Key’s wrists and left the dressing room, leaving Key to stare at the wall across from him, still unsure of what just happened was reality. He knew that he should have kept his mouth shut; he knew that he should have just continued to mope, but now he had unleashed his suffering on someone he cares so much about. Key fell to the ground and started to cry even harder.

The ride back to the dorm was quiet and tense, not just for Jonghyun and Key, but the rest of the members as well. Jinki tried a couple of times to tell jokes in order to lighten the mood, but it failed.

When they got back to the dorm, Key went straight to his room and into his bed. He didn’t bother changing clothes. He pulled the blanket over his head and began to sob. He sobbed until his body couldn’t produce enough tears. He felt a hand be placed on his shoulder and it slowly pulled the blanket done from over Key’s face.

Jinki was sitting on the edge of Key’s bed, with a box of tissues and a carton of Key’s favorite ice cream, butter pecan. Key gave the leader a slight smile as he sat up and accepted the ice cream in his hands. He began to tell everything to Jinki, trusting that he would have a solution to Key’s dilemma.

“I think that you should just wait it out. Let Jonghyun have the chance to react to what you told him. He is still in a stage of shock. He will come to you when he is ready.” The leader said rubbing the tears off of the younger boy’s cheeks. After Key had enough of the ice cream, Key handed the carton back to him and thanked him for helping him. Jinki smiled and walked out of the room.

I will let him come to me. It will all work out fine, Key told himself as he drifted off to sleep.

The next morning, Key woke up early in order to make an apologetic breakfast for the members. He had taken all of his anger out on the members and wanted to make up for it. He knew that he had not acted as he should’ve in that situation, but the past is the past and it was time for all of them to move on.

Jonghyun was the first one to make his way into the kitchen. Key’s body instantly got tense as he saw the older boy slump his way down the hallway. Key’s mouth started to water as he watched Jonghyun stretch, reaching his hands to the sky, his shirt sliding up as well. Those hidden abs that only the members had the pleasure of seeing, had never looked so good. Key turned quickly as Jonghyun pulled his shirt back down and sat at the table.

“I’m making pancakes this morning,” Key said, still ignoring the gaze of the older boy.

“Key, after breakfast, I think that we should talk about what you said to me yesterday.” Jonghyun said with a certainty in his voice. Key knew that he could not escape this.

The other members finally made their way to the kitchen as Key was serving breakfast. They all sat at their seats at the table. It was a normal morning in the SHINee dorm, except Key couldn’t help but notice Jonghyun’s gaze focusing on him a little more than normal.

After breakfast, Jonghyun had asked Jinki to clean up so that he could talk to Key. The leader agreed because he also wanted to get rid of the awkward tension that had taken over their house.

Jonghyun pulled Key into the older boy’s room and sat him on the bed.

“Look, you can only speak when you are spoken too, agreed.”

“Okay.”

“When did you realize that you liked me more than a friend?” Jonghyun asked the first question, sitting down in the chair across from his bed.

“A couple of weeks ago,” Key answered.

“Why didn’t you tell me then instead of being upset?”

“I didn’t know how you would react. I didn’t want it to hurt our friendship,” Key said, with his eyes beginning to water.

“So, you ignore me instead? That doesn’t make sense to me.” Jonghyun said. Key remained silent.

“Do you love me?” Jonghyun finally asked after many seconds of silent. He stared at Key, not allowing his eyes to leave the younger boy’s.

“Yes,” Key said, looking down. He was ashamed that he had fallen in love with his best friend, but he was ecstatic that he had finally been able to say it.

Jonghyun grabbed the bottom of Key’s chin and pulled him in to a tender kiss. Key flinched at the sudden touch, but soon melted into his hyung’s lips. Jonghyun finally released his lips from Key’s and wrapped his arms around Key’s waist, pulling him into a hug. It was like their bodies were perfectly molded to fit each other. Key had never felt so much joy hit him at once; he began to wonder if it was all a dream.

Jonghyun pulled out of the hug and looked into Key’s eyes.

“I love you too,” Jonghyun said smiling.

Key pushed his mouth forward and kissed Jonghyun once again. He knew that this is where he wanted to be for a long time.

-One Year Later-

“I still can not believe that it has been one year,” the youngest member of SHINee said taking a bite of Jonghyun and Key’s anniversary cake.

The SHINee had finished all of their schedules today, in order to celebrate their anniversary. This was an exciting and thrilling day for all of the members, except for one.

Jonghyun had been running a little late after finishing his last schedule of the day, and Key was not happy that he was celebrating his anniversary without his boyfriend their.

“Kibummie, why aren’t you eating any cake?” the leader said.

“I’m just not in the mood. I guess.” Key looked down at his plateful of cake and pushed it to the middle of the table. He crossed his arms and began to dial his boyfriend’s number once again.

Before he could even dial all of the numbers, the front door to the SHINee dorm opened at Jonghyun came in.

He took off his shoes and greeted the members. He could tell already that Key was pissed because he was late.

Jonghyun leaned down in front of Key and pulled a bag out from behind him.

“Happy anniversary, babe,” Jonghyun said, placing the bag on Key’s lap.

Key looked up at the boy’s puppy eyes, and instantly melted in them. He began to open the bag.

“A laundry tag shirt?” Key said, questioning the gift he had just received. He held up a white t-shirt that was based off clothing laundry tags. It was cute but Key couldn’t help but be disappointed.

Jonghyun smiled at Key and pulled something else out of his bad. He unfolded it and it was a black shirt, exactly like the one Key had just received.

“They are our couple shirts,” Jonghyun said, with a slight giggle.

Key couldn’t help, but laugh along.

“But there is one more thing that I have to give you.” Jonghyun got down on his knee and pulled out a little box from his front pant pocket.

He opened the box and there they were. Two beautiful golden rings.

“This is my promise to you. My promise that I will be there for you, thought thick and thin. Good times and the bad. My promise to love you for the rest of my life. My promise to always be with you, no matter what.  I love you, Kim Kibum.” Jonghyun said, slipping the ring on to the younger boy’s thin, slender fingers. His promise was filled with so much sincerity and love, that even the other members got goosebumps.

“Of course! I love you too,” Key said in between tears of joy, looking at the ring on his finger. He had never been so happy in his life. He couldn’t wait for more and more anniversaries to come.

“I dare you guys to wear your shirts on the plane to SMTown tomorrow,” Minho said, giggling at the idea.

“You’re on,” Key said, looking at his boyfriend. Jonghyun shook his head as well.

Jonghyun leaned forward and gave Key a tender kiss. They both smiled at each other. It was perfect. They couldn’t wait until tomorrow.
