Nothing Closer, Nothing Less [Oneshot]

----------------------------------------
------------------

Ever since Woohyun and Hoya got together, Myungsoo's been contemplating some ideas of his own. He really didn't think it was possible for the two to finally get together. Who would have thought that through persistence and disgusting, cheesy pick-up lines, that eventually your feelings would be returned? Really. And here he was, thinking that Hoya was actually smart.

But enough of Wooya. For a long time now, he's been thinking about Sungyeol in way that wouldn't necessarily go under the 'friends' category. Some might be shocked to hear that the Myungsoo was crushing on Sungyeol, of all people.

Sungyeol who was awkwardly tall. Sungyeol who was childish, stupid and dense. Sungyeol who was adorable, wonderful, funny and silly and amazing...that really, Myungsoo only had himself to blame. There was always this embarrassing urge to grab on to him and hold him even if it looked ridiculous hugging a giant. He refrained from it though, always battling those itching hands of his.

The problem was that he and Sungyeol were only 'comfortable' friends. Not best friends, not -friends either (Myungsoo swats away the thoughts brought up from that) they were just...friends. Nothing closer, nothing less.

This became an irritating obstacle for Myungsoo, because they really didn't have much basis to work up towards becoming 'lovers' at this point. How can their relationship grow when they feel content with the way it is right now? Well Myungsoo definitely wanted more, he wasn’t too sure about Sungyeol but he could tell Sungyeol enjoyed being friends with him, only friends. The boy was completely oblivious to Myungsoo's subtle hints.

Truly Myungsoo wanted more from their relationship, really he did. But he wasn't open to the idea of dumping all his feelings on Sungyeol, until he saw signs that Sungyeol came to like him on his own...

So he planned to stay as the 'comfort friend' and not risk anything at the moment. Who knows, maybe he'll grow tired of this ridiculous crush and save him the trouble of heart break.

At least that's what he was planning to do...

until the devil came along.

---

Myungsoo was always careful. He was precise, on point and very nit-picky. He always made sure to keep his feelings in check and not let a breadth of his infatuation out while others were around.

But today, he made the stupid mistake of letting his guard down. Which was totally unlike him but...Sungyeol was being especially tempting today with those white jeans of his.

His eyes couldn’t help but linger…more than they should have. And it was a terrible slip of control. Because, from that very moment where his eyes followed suit, just that one little moment

Woohyun had caught him.

The bad thing was that he never knew Woohyun had seen him until the older confronts him just before they’re about go onstage.

“Heeeey Myungsoo!”

Myungsoo eyes the overly-happy Woohyun who sidled up next to him, an arm wrapping around his shoulder.

“Um… Hey?”

They walk together through hallways of Music Bank finding the right entrance towards the stage.

Myungsoo gives Woohyun pointed stares as the other returns a nauseating grin, patting his arm as he wiggles his eyebrows. Myungsoo pulls away from Woohyun as much as he can, hoping the older man took his creeped-out look as a hint. Sadly, the man just grins harder.

“Soooo Myungsoo… You like the tall ones eh?”

Myungsoo feels a little surprised at what the words were insinuating. Deciding it was nothing, he plays along.

“I don’t mind… But dating taller girls would be pretty awkward”

Woohyun just stares at him for a moment, his eyes turning narrow in a way that he just understood what happened. It reminds Myungsoo of a conniving fox.

“Ahh, you’re a sly one aren’t ya’ Myungsoo” Woohyun said, all the while jabbing him in the arm.

Myungsoo’s face curls up in annoyance, he didn’t think Woohyun’s grin could get any cheesier but it just did.

Deciding to ignore him Myungsoo walked ahead, reaching the entrance of the stage.

All of Infinite quickly comes together and stick their hands out and shouting a ‘fighting’ before breaking off.

Just before he could step on stage he feels a grip on his shoulder pulling him back as someone speaks in his ear.

“Don’t worry! I’ll help you and Sungyeol get together alright? Fighting!”

Myungsoo stares wide-eyed at Woohyun, who by now already pushed in front of him and climbed the small set of stairs. The man quickly turned around smiling and flashed him a thumbs up.

On that very same day, Myungsoo’s voice had cracked.

---

Myungsoo’s gonna sock Woohyun in the face soon. He was obviously doing everything on purpose.

He glares hard at Woohyun suspiciously whispering in Sungyeol’s ear, sending pointed stares in his direction. He didn’t know what kind of man Woohyun was, if he was the type to with-hold honour and respect others, but if one word of his crush on Sungyeol gets out, that man was going to be dead. Never mind Hoya who’ll end up castrating him.

Myungsoo had every right to be suspicious and nervous if Woohyun as so much as stood next to Sungyeol. ‘That little prat’ Myungsoo thinks. He could see it now, Sungyeol asking to have a ‘talk’. He would sit Myungsoo down, place a gentle hand on his own and give him a sorry smile. Then he’ll reject him, reject him in the most awkward and nicest way possible because it’s Sungyeol and-

“Uh…What are you doing?”

Sungyeol laughs against the back of his head, arms tightening around Myungsoo’s chest.

“I wanted to give you a hug.”

Myungsoo swallows the dry lump in his throat, trying his hardest to restrict the love-sick smile from forming on his face. He turns his head back to look at Sungyeol, almost having a heart attack when he’s close enough to kiss him… (Which doesn’t sound like such a bad idea)

“Why? N-Not that I mind! But I just, Yeah I want to know why… exactly”

Myungsoo cherishes the hearty chuckles against his ears, even knowing that Sungyeol is laughing at him right now. Sungyeol hugs tighter, chin digging into Myungsoo’s shoulder.

“Well, Woohyun has been praising you a lot lately and I couldn’t help but agree for the most part. So, I figured you deserve a hug”

Myungsoo looks behind his shoulder, frowning at how those words don’t seem plausible at all. But Sungyeol just returns this smile that knocks that has his heart knocking against his ribs.

And Myungsoo thinks;

‘Well… I guess Woohyun isn’t too bad after all’

---

“Approach mortal.”

Myungsoo looks up from his magazine to see Woohyun looking ridiculous with his arms spread out clad in boxers and a faded shirt.

Myungsoo makes a disgusted noise before raising his magazine again. Not wanting to deal with the member.

“Let’s go, it’s time to talk.”

Woohyun walks off impatiently, expecting Myungsoo to follow suit.

"What?" Myungsoo asks, feigning boredom yet deep down he was panicking

Woohyun rolls his eyes, groaning. "Cut the bull crap Myungsoo, I know the truth."

"The truth to what?"

Woohyun shakes his head at him in disbelief. "Seriously, are you going to continue acting like this?"

Myungsoo stays silent, contemplating if he should just give in or continue this fake-charades game.

Woohyun being ever so patient continued on "So you happen to like Sungyeol. Nothing wrong with that! I just really don't get why you’re trying to hide it so much."

Myungsoo stays quiet, truly unsure on how to reply.

"...Are you gonna tell me why?"

Myungsoo glares at Woohyun who was now looking at him expectantly arms cross like he had every right to know what was going on between him and Sungyeol. But Myungsoo softens the glare before he giving a defeated sigh, walking over to the bed to lie against it.

"To be honest... I really don't know myself."

Woohyun looks troubled by that answer, walking over to join the younger. "I think you should tell him."

“What? No way” Myungsoo opposed, sitting up immediately.

“Well how else are you two gonna end up together?”

Myungsoo sighed, “Not all of us can be as gung-ho with our feelings as you Woohyun. You did what you did with Hoya, because it’s you. If I ever wanted to confess, I would at least have to know that he likes me back…”

“Wow, I’ve never seen you so insecure before …You’re like a girl almost”

Myungsoo punches Woohyun on the arm who was laughing at his own joke as if it was the funniest in the world.

“I think Sungyeol would like you back, if you at least tried to flirt with him or something.”

“I-I flirt!”

Woohyun frowned at him, really disappointed. “Telling Sungyeol that he looks nice in his shirt and running away is not flirting, nor is it when you briefly touch his hand Myungsoo. You gotta be a bit bolder!”

Myungsoo rolled his eyes, lying back on the bed. “Yeah? And do what exactly?”

Woohyun shrugged non-committedly at the question, “I dunno… his or something?”

Myungsoo sputters at Woohyun reply, fighting on whether to agree or go against it.

“It doesn’t sound un-appealing…” Myungsoo clears his throat when Woohyun smirks at him, “But Sungyeol would probably think I’m the biggest e.”

“What? Know something he doesn’t already? You practically burned a hole through his pants the way you were checking him out last time.”

Myungsoo glares at Woohyun hard, who sits up raising his hands as if he were innocent. “Get out hyung.”

Woohyun laughs hard at Myungsoo’s offended behaviour, not failing to catch the embarrassed flush creeping up his neck. Myungsoo leads him to the door shoving him outside with much difficulty.

He’s about to slam it in the other’s face before Woohyun blocks the door with his foot.

“Okay! Sorry! I didn’t mean to make fun of you. I just happen to think your erted-infatuation is a little cute-”

Woohyun flails around to keep the door open when Myungsoo tries to push it close again, looking even more insulted than before. “I may not give thegolden advice that you’d want from Sunggyu. But when I do, it works. I am the Nam Woohyun after all.”

Myungsoo rolled his eyes at him, grimacing as Woohyun gives his infamous winning smile, feeling rather satisfied when he slams the door hard in his face.

---

“Did you- did you just grab my ?!”

‘Ah . Why did I ever take Woohyun’s advice?!’ Myungsoo thought. He felt like he needed to cover this up and quick.

“Ah- Well I… What ? You don’t have any to grab anyways” ‘Just great Myungsoo. ing well done’ He mused in his head. Now he had just insulted Sungyeol.

Sungyeol gaped at that, shoving Myungsoo lightly.

“And why are you still grabbing this non-existent ?”

“…What are you gonna do about it?”

Myungsoo practically jumped in the air, when Sungyeol grabbed his back.

---

Ever since that incident, Myungsoo started flirting every chance he could get. Granted it was a bit awkward at first but it became so frequent that the whole team would practically beg them to get it over with. Something about how the was killing them.

The both of them got so into flirting that it became a normal part of their lives now. They even started this thing –well Sungyeol did- where if they would as so much as meet each other’s eyes they would wink. Sometimes the wink would be really animated and sleazy that it would make the other laugh only furthering the annoyance of the other members. And sometimes, very rarely, Sungyeol would do this seductive wink, the kind that was the very the definition of ‘come hither’. And Myungsoo hated those ones the most, because they brought out these desires that were really too early to be thinking of.

Other times when Myungsoo would simply be sitting down, and Sungyeol would waltz over and sit in his lap like he owned it –which he kind of did-. It was pretty weird to look at a giant sitting on someone shorter; you couldn’t even be tell it was Myungsoo behind him, wrapping his arms around Sungyeol’s waist. But the fact that Sungyeol was sitting on someone’s lap, indicated that it had to be Myungsoo. Sungyeol only sat on Myungsoo.

They would also tease each other a lot. And it was fun sort of flirty kind of teasing which would sometimes get out of hand, but it gave them an excuse to comfort each other.

But what Myungsoo liked the most was that they were closer now. They would talk to each-other about anything and everything. Texting each other constantly, despite how usually talking to someone too much would make you sick of them but it never did.

Myungsoo was extremely content with the way things were now. They were definitely not on a friend-level basis anymore. More and more he felt assured that Sungyeol liked him back.

Myungsoo had to admit –with a little difficulty he might add- that Woohyun’s advice definitely worked. The once considered devil just turned into his saviour.

---

Myungsoo sits on the dressing room couch fiddling with his phone in boredom.

He looks up when he notices someone approaching, heart swelling when he sees a sleepy Sungyeol rubbing his eyes. Sungyeol drags himself to the couch tiredly, plopping down with a sigh.

“Hmm so tired…” Sungyeol murmurs.

Myungsoo chuckles quietly, trying to force his attention back on his phone.

He feels Sungyeol shift beside him before the older literally places his head on Myungsoo’s lap.

Myungsoo more than a little shock, freezes at the action, looking down at Sungyeol who rests his head on his lap.

“…What are you doing??”

“Shh, you’re comfortable…” Sungyeol said softly, wriggling around before finding a perfect spot.

Myungsoo continues to look down fondly. Admiring Sungyeol’s features as the older shut his eyes. He feels his hands move on their own, so close to caressing those puffy cheeks of his before he stops himself when Sungyeol lets out a sigh.

Myungsoo forces himself to concentrate on his phone again but finds it hard to do so when Sungyeol suddenly turns in his lap, Sungyeol’s face just a few inches from his belly. Myungsoo feels his stomach curl in even more, not used to having Sungyeol so close before.

Myungsoo tries to calm his fluttering heart, breathing deeply. Myungsoo returns to his phone, making this scene look as inconspicuous as possible.

“…Myungsoo. Stop texting your girlfriend” Sungyeol whines faintly, disturbed by the button-clicking.

Myungsoo gawks in shock as if Sungyeol were completely awake, “I am not- Wait what? …Are you jealous?” Myungsoo asks jokingly, but deep down was hoping for something more.

Sungyeol smiles softly, snuggling in closer to Myungsoo’s stomach which made the younger hitch in breath.

“Of course…Your mine” Sungyeol says softly.

Myungsoo stares at him for a long moment, not believing what his ears had just heard and his pounding heart. After a long time of mulling it over Myungsoo decides to play along, chuckling as he daringly Sungyeol’s hair who hummed in approval.

“I would never, honey dear.”

Sungyeol smile breaks out into a grin, mocking Myungsoo almost.

Honey dear…” Sungyeol trails off amused, slowly descending into slumber.

Myungsoo continues to look down at the sleeping man’s face, smiling at him affectionately and feeling so elated by the moment.

Myungsoo looks up and nearly jumps out of his skin as Woohyun creepily looms over him, -eating grin present on his face. Myungsoo seriously contemplates on standing up and punching the grin off his face but decides against it when Sungyeol stirs in his lap.

“What the hell do you want now?” Myungsoo hisses, trying not to wake the sleeping man on his lap.

Woohyun just shakes his head at him, looking thoroughly amused. “Seems like my advice is working.” Woohyun whispers, leaving with a smug pat on Myungsoo’s shoulder.

He tails Woohyun’s movement closely hoping his glare could somehow trip him. He watches as Woohyun wraps himself around Hoya’s waist attacking the man’s neck and cheeks repeatedly, before he gets scolded half-halfheartedly by a smiling Hoya.

Myungsoo peers down again at Sungyeol’s sleeping face and imagines what it’d be like if him and Sungyeol were really together.

---

“You’re looking extra hot today.”

“You do realise you said it out loud right?” Myungsoo feels himself smiling, watching Sungyeol look slightly panicked.

Sungyeol coughs; face heating up as he tries to hide his embarrassment. “I-I meant to. Anyways, why are you so dressed up? It’s our day off, shouldn’t you be sleeping?”

“Um… I was planning to go to the movies with Sunggyu, but he bailed.” Myungsoo says as convincingly as he could.

He stares at Sungyeol’s face, fascinated by the way the older seems to be having an argument with himself.

After a lot of muttering and debating going on Sungyeol’s head, he finally spoke. “So… Does that mean you have an extra ticket?”

“Yep,” Myungsoo spoke, working to get his shoes on.

“Oh… What are you gonna watch?”

Myungsoo stands up, having finished tying his shoe laces. He leans against the wall watching amused as Sungyeol tries his hardest to look indifferent. “You really want to go with me don’t you?”

Sungyeol scoffs, fixing his gaze on the TV. “Don’t flatter yourself. You probably planned this whole thing-”

“I’ll give you 30 minutes to get ready.”

“Going.”

---

“Heard about your date with your boyfriend yesterday.”

“It wasn’t a date. And not my boyfriend…yet” Myungsoo groans, sounding embarrassed to say that.

Sungjong laughs lightly, biting into his piece of toast. “Heard that you also got your boyfriend a little 1 month anniversary present too, aww.”

Myungsoo scowls at Sungjong’s mock pout and how Sungjong dramatically places his hands over his chest like he was touched by the whole thing.

“Like I said, not my boyfriend.”

“Do you know what your boyfriend was doing the whole day? Trying to ‘discreetly’ show off the bracelet you got him” Sungjong said amused, air quoting ‘discreet’ for extra measure.

“He would like, stretch his arms over people’s face so they would notice and ask him about it. Or point somewhere so he could shove his wrist in front of their eyes or he would ask us for the time just so he could pull his sleeves back.”

Myungsoo laughs big and hearty, covering his grinning face with his palms. “God, he’s cute.”

“Very” Sungjong smiles, patting Myungsoo congratulatory on the shoulder.

“Y-You think I… should, you know? Finally confess to him or something?”

“Frankly, you should have done it ages ago.”

“That’s a yes… Right?”

Sungjong gives him a big supportive grin, clapping him on the back. “You don’t need me to make decisions for you hyung. Good luck!”

---

“S-Sungyeol can we talk??”

Everyone looks up from the living when they hear that, amused by Myungsoo’s nervous fidgeting. Sungyeol wiggles his way out between Sunggyu and Dongwoo, getting up with a heave and passing the popcorn bowl to one of them.

“Sure.”

Myungsoo looks back at the living room and figures that Sungjong must have told everyone because they were all grinning at him like mad, gesturing ‘fighting’ in unison.

He didn’t waste any time as soon as the bedroom door closes, gushing out “What do you think about me?”

Sungyeol ends up asking him to repeat it again, not having heard the rushed words.

Myungsoo feels his heart leap in his throat; it had been so much easier when Sungyeol wasn’t staring at him so intently.

“W-What…Are your feelings for me?”

“…My feelings?”

“Yeah. Um do you…Do you like me??”

Sungyeol seems surprised by the question, not having thought about it before.

Myungsoo feels anxious as he watches Sungyeol fixedly mulling over his thoughts. The longer Sungyeol thought the more worried Myungsoo got, regretting the whole idea. Sungyeol obviously didn’t know what his feelings were yet.

“How about you first? Do you like me Myungsoo?”

“… I do, a lot actually.” Myungsoo admitted. Watching silently as Sungyeol seems to get the idea, feeling like a rejected idiot by the way Sungyeol was gaping at him.

“God this was a bad idea wasn’t it. I’ll just go-” Myungsoo says, rushing to get the door open before Sungyeol pulls him back.

“Hey! I didn’t reject you yet did I?”

“You might as well.” Myungsoo mutters, gaze fixed on the floor. Sungyeol sighs, wondering how he could word out his flurry of thoughts.

“I’m sorry about before, I was just a little shocked that’s all. There’s a difference between guessing something’s true and knowing it’s true-”

Sungyeol becomes frustrated when Myungsoo tries to escape again, pulling him back.

“I’m not done talking. Rude.” Sungyeol jokes, trying to lighten the suffocating mood but Myungsoo doesn’t laugh, only continues to stare at his feet.

Sungyeol sighs, “How do I put this? I can’t… be like you Myungsoo. I can’t be assured about my feelings like you can. Hell I didn’t even start thinking about them till you asked and I’m sorry about that. But I do know that I really enjoy being with you! I-If that counts?”

Sungyeol groans when Myungsoo maintains eye contact with his big toe obviously refusing to look up. He could also tell that the younger boy was confused by the way his head was tilted.

But Sungyeol continues. “Damn I at this. I know you’re not a risk taking person, nor do you like it when things are miscalculated or not thought out. But I’m hoping that even knowing my feelings are a bit rocky at the moment, that you’re willing to try this relationship thing out with me…”

Sungyeol waits patiently, wondering what Myungsoo would say. He didn’t expect the boy to throw punches at him. Sungyeol who was feeling mildly confused, blocked the attacks with his arms laughing lightly at Myungsoo’s reaction.

“You , you made me teary-eyed for no reason” Myungsoo complained, continuing to hit him lightly before Sungyeol grabbed both of his threatening fists. He guided Myungsoo arms to wrap around his hips and wrapped his own around Myungsoo.

“I’m willing to try if you are. Deal?"

Myungsoo thought about it for a while before he nodded against his chest, nestling closer into the embrace.

Sungyeol smiles, happy that things were finally resolved. “If my feelings are painfully obvious… you should tell me right now”

Myungsoo looks up at that, troubled by his huge urge to blab at how evident Sungyeol’s feelings were. He understood how slow Sungyeol could be at times, but he really wanted the older man to figure his feelings on his own. Even if that did mean risking his chance to be with him.

So Myungsoo manages to shake his head, telling him “I want you to figure that out on your own.”

There was a moment of comfortable silence, both just content that they had worked things out and cleared the air with each other.

“So… Do I like, kiss you now or something?” Sungyeol asked.

Myungsoo laughs heartily at that, burying his face in Sungyeol shoulder who starts laughing with him.

“You’re so awkward...But yes, yes you do.”

-

Everyone was silent once the two came in for breakfast.

If the way their hands were entwined accounted for anything, it meant that things went pretty damn well.

Myungsoo made a poor attempt to look indifferent but everyone could tell the boy was nothing less than sheepish from all the attention. While Sungyeol, who looked like he wanted nothing more than to go back to bed, somehow seem to radiate this satisfied aura all while Myungsoo lead him to the table.

Everyone continued to eat, acting a bit more lively. The Wooya couple renowned for their energetic vigour were at it again, probably groping each other under the table while eating their rice. And then the new pair, who was silent, would steal glances at each other with this knowing twinkle in their eyes.

Sunggyu sighed as he looked around the table, “I guess its lonely single lives for us then.” Addressing the only people who weren’t off in their own world’s at the moment.

“What are you talking about hyung?” Dongwoo affirmed, lazily placing his arms around Sungjong’s shoulders. “Me and Sungjong are next, right Sungjong?”

Sungjong gave him an annoyed look, “As if hyung”

Dongwoo further added to the annoyance, by gripping Sungjong’s shoulder’s tight and giving him a big, wet sloppy kiss on the cheek.

Dongwoo cackled in triumph as Sungjong whined disgusted, rubbing hard at his violated cheeks.

Sunggyu continued to watch, exasperated. “I guess it’s just me then.”
