Diary of a Quiz Bowl Amateur

Description

At a teacher’s request, Seoryeok reluctantly joins the quiz bowl team. However, her fellow quiz bowlers are not quite what she expects, and memorizing trivia may just be the least of her worries…

---

I walked in, fully expecting to see heads bent over textbooks and eyes glued to screens, religiously committing word after word and fact after fact to memory. Instead, I found, well...the Spanish Inquisition.

---

Sunggyu, Hoya, and Sungjong are the main male leads, but the other Infinite members will put in appearances.

Foreword

I'm doing something a little different and writing this in first person, in the form of a diary. I was planning on writing in third person and making this a oneshot or a very short chaptered fic with maybe three chapters max, but I changed my mind because writing in first person is fun and something I haven't done in my writing for quite a while (I think it's been three or four years...) and inevitably the things I write that I have a lot of inspiration for end up dragging out longer than I expect.

Mainly inspired by my secondary school Science Bowl adventures. From eighth to twelfth grade I was on my school's Science Bowl team. In eighth grade my team won second at the regional competition. In high school, we didn't end up winning anything at the regional competitions despite coming very close, but we did win stuff at the district level competition every year. I also qualified for the district Math Bowl competition for three different years (seventh, tenth, and twelfth; it was based on a written test). I attended meetings for my uni's quiz bowl team last semester, but because of schedule conflicts I stopped going. Also, college quiz bowl is ing insane.

Other sources of inspiration:

  • The View from Saturday by E. L. Konigsburg - I read this long ago and reread it every so often. It won the Newbery Medal, which is a prestigious award for children's literature in the United States.
  • "Quiz Bowl Antichrist" by David Levithan and "One of Us" by Tracy Lynn, both short stories in the anthology Geektastic

Special thanks to li_chunei for agreeing to serve as my proofreader for accuracy on quiz bowl stuff since I'm no expert on quiz bowl, only Science Bowl.

Oh, and let's pretend that Korea actually has quiz bowl. ;D

Poster by me.

Chapter 6: This is such a wonderful and unique plotline, and I especially love how you didn't make the seven boys appear extremely attractive in the eyes of Seoryeok, or anyone for the matter. Plus, the interactions between the eight of them is so amusing and hilarious to read.

I like how it is not too long or not too short ! :)

Sorry if I keep commenting - this fic is too good ! <3

And hahaha LOL, yeah, when I read this I knew you had to push aside your EXPERTIES of English and use informal language for the character and the diary entries. You're too good with writing ! :)

And yes, a snarky teenager xD
