Dancing in the Rain

On Rainy Days

The pitter patter of the falling drops of rain were like therapy to him. Seunghyun had always enjoyed when the clouds turned gray, the sky roared and the entire horizon lit up in glaring lights, whenever the next lightning hit. He enjoyed the feeling of wet clothing on his skin, how the fabric of his jeans clung tightly onto his legs, how his shirt stuck to all the wrong places, how his fringe covered half of his eyes and blocked 50% of his sight because even his most expensive hairspray couldn't stand the heavy blows it was dealt. Seunghyun liked how his messenger bag got even more heavy, soaking itself with the downpour like a sponge. He liked how every step he took, left annoying squish noises wherever he went. He loved how everyone went to huddle under the closest shelter in huge groups, leaving almost the entire pathwalk to him.

Sighing, the handsome man bend down, retrieving his umbrella from the ground. His hands were numb by now, causing him to drop the heavy object every now and then. Why did he even bother to take it with him, anymore? He thought while spinning it in his grasp. He never liked hiding from the rain, anyways.

It made him feel alive.

Something not many things managed to do.

Getting up after a restless night. Drinking coffee and leaving for the, way to crowded, metro.

Sitting next to sweaty people, stinky people, annoying people, bothersome people, whining children, nagging seniors and pathetic women, who threw him flirty gazes.

Then getting out of the metro, right into work, his very dull work, to cooperate with his even duller colleagues and the arrogant selfish prick he, politely, had to call his boss. He'd evaluate stats, fax important papers, sign meaningless documents all day, only to get stressed out, drink more coffee and more coffee and more coffee, ignore his growling stomach and the dozens of lunch invitations he got ever so often by female coworkers.

Then taking the metro back home at 6pm.

Spinning, spinning, spinning.

His head was spinning.

People everywhere.

Tall people, short people, young people, old people, quiet people, loud people, chubby people, thin people, wrinkly people, angry people, sad people, happy people and the worst of all, blank people, boring people, and even more dull people. It didn't matter, he hated them all.

He'd get back, feeling totally drained, slipping under the covers for what always felt like less than 5 minutes, only for the cycle to repeat.

He was so tired of it.

He hated the routine, he hated these human -wipes, these slaves of consumption and money. These cold hearted, success driven and spineless ladder climbers of society. He hated them.

By far the worst for him, though, was that he was one of them.

Seunghyun sighed and tilted his head upwards, taking a close look at the night sky and praying to the higher heavens to hear him out, to forgive him. Only one person, he thought, show me only one person who isn't corrupted with greed. Show me one person to dance in the rain, rather than hiding from it. Show me one sincere smile, only one...

The sky rumbled, making Seunghyun flinch. He hadn't even realized that the rain had stopped falling, the bustling of the streets slowly picking up again.

Looking around he tried to find something, someone, anything to hold on to.

Thought so. He couldn't help but to smile bitterly to himself after he was done with searching the crowd around him.

His shoulders dropped as he started to make his way towards the metro.

It was the same everywhere. Grim faces everywhere, not one genuine smile. Plunging himself into the old, ratty cushions of the unhealthily rusty metro seat, he started to day dream again. Everything was so much more colorful and vibrant in his dreams, contrary to his sickeningly gray and monotonous life. He let his gaze wander over the sea of heads again to prove his point.

Gray. Gray. Gray. Pink. Gra- Wait. Pink?

Breaking out of his reverie, he jumped slightly in his seat, his head shooting upwards as he comically drew his eyes wide open.

Pink.

He blinked.

Pink.

Seunghyun couldn't help but stare. There, in midst of stuck up Business man and and tie wearers, sat a young man with shockingly pink hair. His nose scrunched up cutely, he was swaying to whatever music was blasting through his headphones. He smiled so breathtakingly beautiful, Seunghyun was left short of air for a moment.

Trying to remember on how to breathe, the business man kept staring at the frail looking guy, marveling at how soft his skin looked and how these beautiful feline eyes seemed to radiate with happiness, while muttering the lines of some upbeat song under his breath.

The metro came to a rattling halt 5 minutes later, breaking both, Seunghyun, as well as the pink haired boy, out of their happy bubble.

The boy readjusted his headphones before grabbing his bag and stepping out of the compartment. It had started raining again.

Seunghyun hurried to follow the beautiful being out of the doors, antsy to not lose sight of him. A breath of relief left his lips as he spotted the pretty boy down the road, only a few hundred meters separating them.

He stepped closer, cautiously, as if afraid of scaring the other one off with his mere presence. Watching, as nimble fingers made their way through fluffy strands of pink hair, he smiled. The smaller man was truly beautiful and the tall business man loved how the other one didn't seem to be fazed by the weather at all.

Seunghyun watched and wanted to shout out as a car drove by, but it came too late. The wave of muddy rain water was soaking the petite boy from head to toe within a matter of second. He was just about to rush over as the drenched boy started to laugh quietly under his breath. Eyes searching the sky, he moved in circles, grinning widely, before dropping his bag and jumping the nearest puddle, screaming gleefully.

“Are you going to keep on staring all day or are you actually planning on joining me?” He smirked, showing of his wide gummy smile afterwards.

Seunghyun searched the air around him, trying to figure out whom exactly the boy was talking to. But there was no one. Well...

No one but him.

The boy tilted his head in a curious nature, his searching eyes digging deep into the depths of the taller males soul. Seunghyun froze, wasn't sure what to do.

His father didn't raise him to jump puddles.

But then again his father didn't raise him to laugh or smile either.

Now that he thought about it, his father didn't raise him at all. It was more like he programmed him the way he wanted his son to be.

Slowly, Seunghyun dropped his bag and took the remaining steps between them in a real awkward manner.

He didn't know what to do, now that he was right in front of the small puddle.

The boy seemed to sense his distress, took him by his hands and made them twirl around in tumbling, stumbling and dizziness evoking circles.

The smaller male laughed again, in the same carefree manner from before and Seunghyun couldn't help but be reminded of the melodic wind chimes tingling in the soft breeze, which always graced the doorsteps to his grandmothers beach house.

Seunghyun blinked in surprise, dumbfounded, his pink haired companion however didn't seem to mind at all.

He laughed again, louder this time, ridiculous facial expressions accompanying his obvious joy.

The tall business man closed his eyes for the moment, trying to block all the surrounding sounds out, except for that laughter, that heavenly laughter.

He closed his eyes in comfort and trusted this stranger to spin him around, safely, around and around and around. All around.

His entire world, his entire being seemed to swing and spin and topple and turn in that moment. But Seunghyun didn't feel threatened or anxious at all. He felt invincible.

And Seunghyun laughed.

He laughed and laughed and laughed and he just couldn't stop, his deep, booming laughter filled him up, him, his companion and the entire air around them. It seemed to resonate from the depths of his soul.

He lifted his head up again, to greet the roaring sky, and briefly wondered if the booming noises from above where a thunderstorm or his own rumbling laughter. He heard the pitter patter of the rain again, the noises merging into one with the pitter patter of their dancing feet. Jiyong smiled at him. It was blinding and breathtaking and oh so bright and beautiful. It drowned out everything else and Seunghyun saw stars dancing right before his eyes. It was like lightning had struck him.

And Seunghyun, he forgot for a moment, what it meant to be grounded. He forgot about gravity, about the worries weighing him down, about his fears holding him hostage. He forgot about rationality and that his feet where firmly placed onto the ground. He forgot all about, what it felt like, being dead and empty. He forgot about the ever present gray sky above him. He forgot about his drowning lungs. He forgot about the darkness, for, in that moment, there was only light surrounding him.

He laughed and smiled until his face felt sore.

The boy, right before him, beamed up at him and it was in that moment, that the stoic and hardened man felt his heart soften and the ice on his soul melting.

The blinding smile before him felt like tangible happiness.

That was the moment, Seunghyun knew, he knew,

that, happiness was a real thing.

As real as the rain on his skin.

As real as the air he breathed.

As real as the beautiful male before him.
