Heartstrings

You were staring at the glass door, patiently waiting for the person that invited you over for something to do. Unfortunately, he and the rest of the band had been called in by a manager for a “quick” meeting, it should’ve been expected since they had been busy. You understood that you could be waiting for a while, so to keep your mind occupied you decided to look at the instruments that were around the room. Your eyes stopped on the black Fender bass that laid rested on its stand.

You had always had an interest in learning to play the bass, but the things you read online didn't really stick. You often debated asking Younghyun to teach you. You knew he would be excited to help but you didn't want to keep him from doing his job.

You walked over and picked up the bass guitar in your hands, you knew he wouldn't mind because it was you. It was a little heavier than the appearance would give. You lifted the red strap and put your head through it and placed your hands on the guitar where you thought they would go. The strap was adjusted to Younghyun’s body, so it turned out a little too long for you as the guitar placement was too low and you had to extend your arms further than what is required. You sat on a stool and plucked the strings, just listening to the sounds that came from them. The notes were deep in sound and, even though you were just plucking strings randomly, pleasant to your ears. You sat on the stool and continued to pluck random strings trying to remember what notes where which and whether the guitar was in tune, it most likely was knowing Younghyun.

You were too into your own world to notice that the door to this practice room opened up and four guys quietly entered the room after noticing that the light was on, a sign you are already there. “Watch out!!” a loud voice startled you from your mind, “_______ is on the bass.” You turned to the glasses wearing man, “Jae, you almost gave me a heart attack.” He ran a hand through his hair, “Yeah, I tend to do that.” You looked passed Jae and saw only Seungjin, Wonpil, and Dowoon walk in before the door closed. The questioning look on your face directed at the closed door didn't go as unnoticed as you thought because after seeing you Seungjin said, “He is still at the meeting, but it shouldn't be too long now.” You smiled at Sungjin’s answer to your unasked question. You just turned your attention away from the door and back to the guitar in front of you, deciding that you were going to continue to try and figure this guitar out.

You saw a pair of legs roll into your line of vision, “Oh, ______.” The deep voice said in awe, “you’re getting pretty good at that.” You look up at the dark haired drummer, “Thanks, Dowoon,” you smile, “But I have no idea what I am doing.” “Ah.” he simply said, “You sound better than I do when I play with hyung’s guitar. I am sure with some practice you could be really good.” His compliments lifted your spirit a little, you were going to say your thanks to his kind words but you were stopped by a voice behind Dowoon. “Have you tried to ask Younghyun hyung for a lesson?” You answer Wonpil quickly, “The thought did cross my mind, but I don’t want to take his time away from writing songs.” “Ay~,” Wonpil said tilting his head back a bit looking down at your seated form, “I am sure if you asked, he would drop everything in that moment just to help you with something you want to do.” He laughed, “If you wanted to learn the kazoo, he would learn how to play it himself just so he could teach you.” Before you could even say what you thought on the matter Wonpil pointed his finger at you, “Just ask.” You wanted to ask Younghyun, you didn’t doubt that he wouldn’t turn you down, “Okay,” you say to appease the keyboardist, “I’ll ask when I see him.”

The members began to chat amongst themselves, about little things. After a little while, you felt a hand on your shoulder. You looked up at Sungjin with a raised brow, “Hey,” he said softly, “We are heading down to the cafeteria to get a bit to eat. You coming?” You shook your head. He smiled and said, “I figured. Come down and join us if you are waiting too long.” You hummed as a response, letting him know that you heard him. You continued to sit on the stool enveloped in your own little world. You bounced the idea around in your head about asking Younghyun to help teach you the bass.

--

As you absentmindedly plucked the strings, you were completely unaware of the presence watching you in the room. They stood a little ways behind you, watching you quietly wanting to remember this small moment. He watched your busy back as you sat on a stool with his guitar in hand plucking strings at random, trying to formulate your own tune. The strap was a little too long, but he thought that wasn't a bad thing. You began to hum along as you played the bass. He enjoyed hearing your familiar voice. It was something he believed he could listen to forever, but he knew that time was unforgiving so he knew he needed to continue on with life. He brought his two hands together, softly as he tried hard not to scare you. The soft clap caused you to whip around. As your eyes met his, he couldn't help smiling, it just happens.

--

You jump slightly at the sudden unexpected claps behind you. You quickly turn and meet the gaze of the man you were waiting for, Younghyun. He smiles wide, eyes crinkling a bit at the ends. You return the smile, and jokingly say, “About time.” You continued to sit in the stool, Younghyun’s bass wrapped around you. “I was beginning to think that you had forgotten me.” He laughed, “I may be late sometimes, but it is impossible to forget you.” You could feel your face heat up, and you felt a tightness rise in your chest, as if it was telling your beating heart to calm down. You noticed him give you a quick once over before saying, “The bass looks good on you.” He smiled before adding, “You never told me you were learning.” He tried to look offended, but it didn't work out, “It's more of, I am interested in learning, as opposed to, I am currently learning.” “What do you know so far?” He asked pulling up another stool and sitting. “Not much, honestly.” You chuckle, “I have only read some things online, but they haven't exactly stuck. I would learn better with someone teaching me, but I haven't exactly asked anyone yet.” He sits a little straighter before he points to himself, “Look no further, ______. I will teach you the ways of bass.” You smile and ask, “You’re not too busy?” He looked at you, only truth in his warm brown eyes, “I am never too busy when it comes to you, _______.” He really was something else.

Before either of you could get lost in thought, Younghyun clapped his hands together with a drawn out, “So,” he looked off to the side in thought before turning back to you, “Let start with the strings on the bass.” He leaned forward making the space between the two of you smaller. He pointed at the very top string, the thickest one and went down, “You first have E string, then A, D, and lastly G.” You look at him doubtful, “You know you are probably going to have to remind me multiple times because I have a feeling I will either forget or mix it up.” He thought for a minute before smiling, “Think of it like this,”he then points the E string “Every,” then the A string below, “Awesome,” the D string, “Dude,” then the G, “Guitars.” You watched him point to each of the strings before you said it out loud, “Every awesome dude guitars.” You look up at him, a small smile on you lips, “That's stupid.” He laughs at your reaction, “Good,” he says, “That means you will remember it.”

“Okay,” he says, “When you play, your left hand will be here,” he gently grabbed your hand from its place on your lap, “on the underside of the neck.” He then guides your right hand to a place above the strings. He sits back, “The bass really does look good on you.” You could feel your face heat up at the compliment. He didn't give you time to say much as he continued his lesson. “Okay,” he smiled while looking at you, “Now comes the fun part. Let me teach you a song.” You frowned a bit, “I don't think having me butcher someone's song is the most encouraging way to teach me.” He laughed, “You won't have to worry about that.” He stood up, “You will learn about 30 seconds of a new song that I need to write some lyrics for. That way you won't butcher someone else's song, which I doubt, and I can think about some lyrics.” He stood behind you, close enough where you could feel his shirt lightly brush against your back. He placed his hands on the guitar almost as if you didn't stand in the middle, “You start like this.” His voice was quite, there wasn't a need to be loud since his head was right next to yours. You tried to stay focused on his hands, attempting to remember everything he was showing you. With him so close however, it was a bit hard to do. You felt slightly nervous, wanting to make sure Younghyun’s time with you wasn't wasted. After he showed you he pulled away, leaving you to feel the slight draft coming from the air-conditioner. He came back around to sit back in his stool before smiling, “Now you try. If you get too confused I'll lead you In the right direction.”

So you played, carefully recalling what he had just shown you. You stumbled a few times over the notes at the beginning, but, with Younghyun there to help here and there, you were now playing this piece without error. “Flawless.” Younghyun simply says as you finish the piece. “I had a good teacher,” you say as you look at him. You played the bit of song once more, this time you really listened to the piece. “It sounds so cool.” You say in amazement. “Yeah. It's going to be a fun song,” he walked over to grab one of the acoustic guitars before he sat again, and without telling you he began a countdown while looking at you expectedly, “One, Two, Three…” At the same time, you began to play. It was amazing how adding one more instrument contributed to the sound of the song. You looked forward to hearing it when it's done. As you finished the last bit of the song, Younghyun looked at you, a wide smile on his face as he said, “This is why I like you, ______. You always surprise me.” At his words, you could feel the warmth of his compliment heat up your cheeks as your heart responded with a skip, and you averted your gaze away from him. You hoped by doing so, your flushed face would go unnoticed. In response, you said, “Quit playing, Younghyun.” He sits for a second, completely still, before he suddenly begins to play the bit of song you had just learned, but this time he began to sing:

I’m serious.

My eyes surly say “I like you.”

Why don't you feel it?

Don't you get wind when you see my face?

Don't you ever just vaguely laugh away

Can't you just stop acting like that?

Oh please someone help me with my swollen heart

I can't stop loving you.

You watched simply amazed, yet again, by his ability to play and his voice. “I thought you said that you didn't have any lyrics for this song yet.” He replies, “I didn't at first, but I think I do now.” You raise your eyebrows slightly in question, “Suddenly hit with inspiration?” He smiles softly eyes warm with affection, “Yeah, something like that.”
