We Should Have Stayed Friends

We Should Have Stayed Friends [One-Shot]

Listen to this for the Mood. it's so bittersweet.

---------

The small cafe was exactly the same as she remembered. But it always was, every time she came on Sunday. But it was exactly the way she remembered when she was here with him. Looking around, the same small table was there. Getting her hot cappuccino with extra foam from the same waiter,Jiyong, she sat down, staring fondly outside, reminiscing the memories, that was have seemed almost a century ago. She locked them up, tightly in her chest, yet every time she came here, she couldn't help but open it up, taking a peek at what was left of them.

Yah, Changmin! Where are you taking me?!” Miho whined. But all Changmin did was grin, grabbing her arm and running out of their shared apartment. They lived together for 2 years, being best friends since birth and now lovers, they were just too familiar of each other that they didn't mind the intimacy.

Running on the small pavement, making it to the busy cities, Miho stood beside Changmin puffing air at the sudden workout. She glared at him, crossing her arms and pouted. But Changmin continued to grin, even pecked her lips before turning her to look at the cute small cafe. The cafe was called “Romantic Kitty”. But for some reason, the childish name didn't effect the mature cafe one bit. It actually added a twist the the fancy little cafe. Entering the cafe, the were immediately escorted by a waiter, to a secluded corner, where a black comfy table sat with two shiny striped chairs accompanied it. A light above showed on it, lightening the area a bit.

Ma'am, Sir , if you guys would like to order anything, please come to counter” A man said smiling, his name tag shining. The name tag claimed his name to be 'Jiyong'

Changmin grumbled but again took Miho's hand walking toward the counter. “He was totally flirting with you, Miho. Did you see that smile? Grrr...” Miho laughed, covering . Changmin was just too cute and yet he didn't even know it.

Smiling they took their drinks to there table and they spent the whole afternoon, playing and messing around. Of course they ate out their whole wallet, knowing Changmin. Soon enough, this small cute little cafe became their place. Their secret spot, for them only.

Now? They haven't seen each other in three years. After there breakup. Miho grimaced at that memory. She couldn't stand thinking about it.

Miho-ah....let's break up” Changmin said, sitting on their shared couch. Jerking her eyes off of the t.v., she stare at Changmin shockingly. So many questions ran through her mind. Was she not good enough? Were they not good enough, against the world? Why?

Before, before you think anything, anything that you would. You have to listen to me Miho, okay? Don't do anything rash, okay?” Changmin warned, knowing how Miho can be hysterical at times in crisis. Nodding her head slowing, her eyes unfocused, she sat still; her heart suddenly feeling heavy.

I think it's better if we stayed friends. Just friends. Okay? I'll...i'll move out tomorrow, and you can keep this place, Miho.” Changmin explained, looking at her, eyes guilty. But Miho didn't want guilt, Miho wanted love, smiles, and warmth.

But of course, she complied. She would do anything for Changmin, even if he told her he never wanted to see her again, she would do as she was told.

And as promised, he left the next day, leaving only his scent and Miho's broken pieces, forcing her having to put herself back together.

Last night was odd, enough to say. Miho suddenly had gotten a call from Changmin. Yes, they did agree on being friends, like they did before they became lovers. But soon enough, they started to drift apart, being busy with school, work, and basically growing up. But Miho learned something. Before she thought her love for Changmin would fade away, as she grew. She believed that it would, so the pain could lessen, but it never did. Her love was still just as strong as it was five years back.

The bell of the shop rang sharply and soundly, indicating someone had entered the small shop, snapping her out of her memories. She didn't know what to do, thank them or curse them for interrupting. Looking up, she was delighted with a bittersweet sight.

Changmin looked as handsome as ever, even better than there last meeting three years ago, after he left to Jeju island, to study. Of course, they still called and talked, even laughed at times, where Miho wanted to cry, which she did after the calls. Every time. It was like a never ending cycle.

Changmin was dressed in a gray blazer with a white button up, a blue tie with small grey swirls was adorned on the dress shirt. Wearing gray slacks and black dress shoes, he looked completely sharp. His hair was tinted chocolate brown, swept to the left side, and his sharp jawline jutted out. Miho looked down at herself, thanking the Heavens that she was wearing something at least comparable to him. Her wavy, natural brown hair was all nestled on the left as her bangs swept to the right. She was waring a white tight fitting top, with a turtle neck, but short sleeves, with little ruffles around them. A gray pencil skirt held her hourglass shaped body with a thick black belt to heighten her smooth curves, and black pumps that made her legs look as if they could go on for days. At least now, she didn't have to lift her head up all the way up to face his beautiful, almond shaped eyes.

Thinking that they were the only ones to catch up, Miho heard the chime of the bells again, to see a small looking girl stand next to Changmin; holding his hand tightly. Like she use to. Her eyes immediately snapped to their hands, holding so tightly, and she felt a pang. It hit her hard, her heart was shaking, and yet she was capable of keeping that smile on her face. They went over and sat down at the small table that was Miho's and Changmin's. “This is our table. Only ours, okay Miho! So don't you dare bring another guy here okay! You better not!” Changmin said teasingly. 'Speak for yourself, ', Miho thought. How could he be so heartless? He knew this table was for them only, yet here they sat, face to face. Miho took a sip of her now cold cappuccino, glancing and observing the girl next to Changmin.

She was small, compared to her. Of course, she looked like a girl, not a women, yet. Her cheeks was dusted with a tinge of pink, her eyes looking everywhere but at Miho. Miho inwardly smirked, was this little girl intimidated by her? She was wearing a thick jacket with fur on the hood, her long hair, with straight edge bangs were cascaded down her thin shoulders. Under that jacket was peeking through a white sundress. She was wearing uggs, and a satchel to top off the outfit. 'cute' Miho thought dully.

Miho's eyes then shifted towards Changmin. He looked a bit flustered, his cool from a while was gone, He fidgeted a bit before speaking, “ Miho, this is my fiance, Lee Ji-Eun. Eunnie, this is my..bestfriend, Miho” Changmin said smile, but it was faltered at the words “best friend”

Fiance.

Fiance. The words rang through her head.

Miho wanted to scowl, to shout, but she put on a fake, professional smile, ones she would use at her business meetings. Sticking out her long slender fingers, she smiled and shook the girl's small hand.

The pang twinged again in her chest, the heavy heart doubling, and the shaking wouldn't stop. Her heartbeat increased, and her eyes shallowed over but, she kept her smile. That was the only thing left in her mask, her facade. The only way he wouldn't see through her.

“Annyong...” Miho heard the small girl say shyly. When did Changmin ever like shy girls?

“Hey, you don't have to be tense. I'm not going to bite” she said, trying to lighten up the atmosphere. Even if this was going to hurt her, in the end Changmin's happiness was all that mattered. Nothing else.

Changmin smiled a thankful smiled toward Miho, before looking down at his fiance, to smile a soft loving smile. The pang came again. That smile use to be hers only, only exclusively for her.

Suddenly, Miho felt a sudden rage in her heart. She suddenly hated the girl in front of her, yet she didn't do anything wrong. It was all Changmin's fault right? She wanted to think that. It was his fault for making her hate this sweet little angel. His fault for making Miho love him. His fault for not loving her back. It was his fault for just being able to love easily.

But no. It wasn't his fault. And Miho knew it better than anyone else.

It was hers.

It was her fault that she hated the poor angel. Ji-eun did nothing but love Changmin for being him. And a part of Miho was thankful for that, but she couldn't control the rage she felt. It was Miho's fault for continuing to love Changmin, the past and the present Changmin. It was her fault that he couldn't love her back. It was her fault that she wasn't able to let him go, no matter how much she tried.

“Ah, so this is the one that's able to catch Changmin's heart?” Miho said slightly smirking. Changmin gave her a hard glare, but she ignored it was Ji-eun smiled.

“Well...honestly, he stole mine first! Have you seen him eat unnie?!” Ji-eun asked excitedly, breaking out of her shy shell. Miho winced as she called her 'unnie'. “Ah. I really can't hate you can I?” Miho thought. She just wanted an excuse to hate her, and not herself. To blame everything on herself was harsh.

And the afternoon continued on Miho and Ji-eun talking about Changmin and his habits. Miho couldn't help but get along with the little girl. She was kind, sweet, endearing, loving, bright. She was like a splash of Sun for Changmin's life. And Miho couldn't express enough gratitude toward the young girl. Even if it meant her heart will once again be broken.

She looked up and made eye contact with the waiter and now store owner of “Romantic Kitty”. Jiyong looked at her concernedly, but she smiled and shook her head, indicating she was fine. She'll keep it together until they left, until she was left again.

Changmin noticed the small communication in between the two. His ex-lover and the waiter that was here since five years ago, made him tighten his his hand into a fist, his lips into a tight line, and furrowed eyebrows.

Ji-eun looked at him curiously. “Oppa, what's wrong?” When Ji-eun asked that, both Miho and Changmin looked up. Miho curious as to what's wrong and the word 'Oppa' used, and Changmin shocked, at his display of emotion for another women. Changmin shook his head and smiled, kissing the plump blushing cheek of his fiance. He didn't love Miho like that anymore, he was only protective of the girl, his best friend, and once lover...right?

Miho winced once again at the display of affection. Sigh, couldn't they tell she was in a crisis? Turning her head she looked outside once again.

…....................................................

Ji-eun excused her self to go to the restroom, explaining that the coffee has done her some bad. Changmin nodded, and smiled.

Changmin looked toward Miho, smiling a bright and dreamy smile.

“Soooo, what do you think? Isn't she perfect?” Changmin asked excitedly. Miho smiled back, it was as if it's automatic. But something bothered her even more, how could he smile so easily, so freely when she was sitting here, feeling ty and as if she could cry any moment, not even planning to stop.

“She's perfect, perfect for you Changmin,” Miho said softly with a faint smile. Changmin cocked his head to the side. Why did his chest tighten up at the words Miho spoke. Why did Miho look so far, so distant?

Miho irruptively stood up, grabbing her bag, wanting to leave after saying those words. She couldn't stay any longer. How could she lie so easily?! How could she say something that meant nothing at all? But it was all for him after all. His happiness was hers, right?

Changmin looked up confused as to why Miho was leaving. “You're leaving already? Why don't you wait for Ji-eun to comeout-”

“What's wrong, oppa? We're leaving already? Okay!” Ji-eun said cutely, but all Miho could do was smile sadly. She was perfect for him. Everything she as not, Ji-eun was.

“Y-yeah, let's go Ji-eun. Um, before you leave Miho? Here's a invitation to the wedding...if you can come” Changmin asked uncertainly.

But Miho shook her head, “ I can't come Changmin-shi Ji-eun ah. I'm moving to Japan, in two weeks” It was true, she really planned to move last month, in with her cousin. She wanted to study more about art and architecture before starting her own business.

Changmin winced at the 'shi' used in his name. He looked disappointed and a bit guilty. It was truly wrong to ask your ex to your wedding, so they can witness your own happiness. But he didn't want to assume that Miho wasn't happy.

“Hey, you guys stay here a bit more. I'll take my leave. Spend some time together as a couple before the big day. I wish and bid you the best into marriage and parent hood. I truly do." She said looking at both. Finally, turning towards Changmin, she looked him in the eyes saying,"And Changmin? I love you.” She said, filled with genuine honesty. She was bitter and childish at first, but she had to put his own happiness before hers. No, it wasn't right to for her. She wanted him to be happy, because she loved him.

Changmin, hearing her confession of loved, took it to another meaning then Ji-eun did, assuming it was only as best friends, saying it. But Changmin knew that Miho meant that she truly loved him, still. And his heart pained and yearned for her own happiness.

Maybe it's better this way, maybe I'll be able to hate you,” Miho thought

Walking outside the small cafe, Miho breathed in a fresh breath, letting it out raggidly, before her tears start streaming. She placed her dark sunglasses to mask her glassy eyes even more.

“Of course you'll never be mine again, but what if. If you ever want to come back, the spot next to me, at our table, will be yours. It will always be yours.” Miho thought sadly, smiling at the mere fantasy thought.

Walking down the same pavement they once had, tears rolling, eyes casted down, and a bitter smile was presented on her smooth face. The “clack clack” of her shoes were the only music to keep her going.

Even though I don't regret anything, We should have stayed friends.”

…..........................................

Waving goodbye at Jiyong, Changmin watched as Miho left, he watched her forlornly.

“Oppa, are you okay? Hey let's get a parfait, hmm?” Ji-eun asked. He smiled weakly at her and complied.

On his way towards the counters, he couldn't help but think one thing.

We should have stayed friends. I didn't want to hurt you Miho-ah. I'm sorry”

Not wanting to be selfish, he wasn't able to force those words out, saying it.
