Since I Was 7
Him or Him"Move out of the way please!"
"Keep pumping air in her, her breathing is becoming too slow!"
"Mina? Mina are you still with us?"
I could hardly see any of the people speaking to me at that moment. My eyelids kept closing and I'd sink into darkness before hearing another voice call out to me. All I knew was that I was on a gernie, getting rushed in to the hospital since I collapsed at home and my breathing started to become very shallow. I fluttered open my eyes for another split second to see a nurse looking down at me and the ceiling above me moving away quickly. I closed my eyes again and this time, I was in darkness for a while. For too long.
"Mina?"
My eyelids snapped open and I suddenly saw that I was in a well-lit hospital room with my mom sitting to my right. She let out a sigh of relief and squeezed my hand so tight that I winced from the pain. Tears fell from her eyes and she kept exclaiming to me how worried she was that I wasn't going to make it. I wanted to smile at her and tell her that I felt ok, but I couldn't. There were tubes covering my face, running up my nose and one going down my throat. I couldn't feel the one in my throat though, it's as if they numbed my throat or something. All I could do is smile at her with the corner of my eyes crinkled.
The door opened and in came a tall woman with a boy next to her. I've never seen him in my life so he couldn't have been a visitor. He was handsome, with sweet eyes and a faint smile on his face. But much older for me to blush at. He looked to be around 17 and I was 7 at the time. What was he even doing here anyways? It appeared that the lady was my doctor since she wore a long white coat and a stethoscope around her neck, but what was his purpose here?
"Annyeong," the woman said with a sweet smile as she made her way over to my mother and I. The boy stayed behind and watched.
"I'm your doctor, doctor Kim. You might not remember me since I haven't seen you since you were a wee little thing," she softly said to me, "it's unfortunate that I had to see you back in this condition, but I am very happy to know that you are awake and ok."
My mom nodded and started to massage my hand, "it's a miracle, isn't it?"
"Yes," Doctor Kim said, smiling over at my mom, "her breathing was... very slow. Would you mind if I could talk to you for a second? I have some information to tell you regarding her."
My mom appeared worried at that moment. At the time, I didn't know why, as I thought I was all good and healthy. But, little did I know, this was just the beginning of my illness. My mom nodded and stood up, giving my knuckle the last rub before letting go and walked outside with the doctor. There, I was left with the mysterious boy who stayed to the side and glanced at me every so often.
It was silent for a little bit, with the usual beep of my heart monitor sounding in the air. I looked around the room awkwardly, anxiously waiting for my mom to come back and hopefully get me out of this hospital.
"Annyeonghaseyo," the boy said, walking to the foot of my bed and gave me a little smile, "my name is Jinhwan, the son of your doctor."
I blinked at him before nervously looking away. I still felt his eyes on me though and I could hear his footsteps coming closer. He made his way to the left side of my bed and leaned slightly against the nearest wall.
"Sorry if I make you nervous, I don't mean to. I'm just here for a mentor program. My school does this thing where we can go to where we want to work in the future and watch someone do their job. My mom so happens to be a doctor, which is exactly what I want to do in the
