Till Death Do Us Apart

T // K // M

The first time Minho saw him was when he was just a mere child; probably around three or four years old. He was grabbing the morning paper for his father when he notices two odd people standing on top of the fence. Yes, on top of it, like how a cat would. Both of them were wearing black, top to bottom black, even if it’s on a hot summer morning. One had shiny silver hair styled back, some strains escaping the almost perfect hair. Across his face though, what Minho doesn’t get is that he has a huge black mark, paint?

The other, stood there in a more elegant pose. Unlike the taller, he had jet-black hair, long loose pants covering legs. His hands crossed neatly in front of his stomach, rings covering almost all the fingers. Oh! And a large, very very large black brim hat.

Minho will never forget that huge hat. It was an odd one to ever thought of purchasing such hat. Nevertheless he shrugged the two odd balls across the street, as his mother told him best not to mingle in other people’s business

Later that afternoon, unfortunate news landed upon the quiet neighborhood, Mrs. Hyeon from across his house has passed away. Immediately his small brain began to connect the dots, those two odd people were on her fence this morning… could it be?

“Assassins!”

It was a nice whack on the head with a newspaper that stopped him from nagging too much about the so-called ‘assassins’ as her cause of death was natural she was 83 years old after all.

A month has passed and all is well he hadn’t seen them again. Not after that morning at Mrs. Hyeon they also didn’t reappear in any parts of the neighborhood. Minho was relieve the assassins have left his peaceful complex.

Happily skipping home from school he noticed his friend Key, he was a noisy one but fun to tease. Key was standing next to an old man on the intersection. He looked very tired, eyes all drained out of life, his figure was crunch forward, and he carried a small messenger on his right.

Being the mischievous child that he is, he went to greet on Key. At the same time the light went green and the old man took a long step forward. The truck’s break was unfortunately broken that day

Key screamed in terror as the body went flying before him, Minho rushed to his friend’s side, quickly covering his eyes. The sound of the break squeaking and the hard crash of flesh and metal were unforgettable, almost as unforgettable as the man smirking across the road.

It was the silver haired guy from before, only that he was alone.

Minho hated his smile. He was chuckling, low and dark, twisted was the right word described. He’s holding his stomach and laughing at the lifeless body in front of him.

“Aren’t you all seeing this?! He caused the accident!”

Minho was called the crazy kid after that day for pointing and yelling at nothing

Five years later his parents had manage to scrape enough money to finally move in to the big city. His dad had just received a promotion and now they are leaving their traditional ground house for a large apartment on floor 23. The view was amazing. He felt like he was flying

People look small from all the way up here. Cars going by, dots of people crossing the street it was almost like in those kids’ animation movies. He leaned on the window, wanting to see more of the streets down below.

Oh please mercy his soul. His brown eyes widen when he notice a large black brim hat. It was a mistake. His eyes are playing tricks right now, it has been two years, and he couldn’t possibly have—

“I have to go”

When he went down to the said street, he saw the two odd people were there, standing in front of his lobby door. Both look absolutely the same, not an inch different from every time Minho had encountered them.

“Accident?” the silver haired spoke. It was the first time he heard him spoke. Hell it was the first time he even stood this close to any of them

“No, natural” the shorter answered, voice soft and calm unlike his counterpart.

“Boring” he leaned back on the glass wall of Minho’s brand new apartment

What are they talking about? They seem to be facing the street as if they were expecting something, or in this case Minho guested, it was someone.

Almost a second later a bright yellow cab pulled over in front of his street. A young pregnant lady stepped out. She was carrying a lot of shopping. Bread, milk, eggs, flour, kimchee, and all the basic needs you all can think of. Her smile was bright as she thanked the old driver for the ride. But immediately her face dropped when she took a step forward

Her water broke

And that was the last time he saw her before she was rushed to the hospital. She gave birth to a beautiful baby boy. But she didn’t make it back

It was the third encounter of death he has faced in his short eight years of life and those two always seem to be present. It was frustrating it doesn’t make sense

Cold night, fall is around the corner. Minho is now in high school. As the time progresses he had found the answer towards his long childhood mystery, regarding his assassins. According to Jonghyun, his anime freak friend, those who appear before death are present to take the soul away, the Japanese called them shinigami

Simply, God of the dead

Made sense.

But Jonghyun also said no one could see the shinigami until their certain time of death. Should Minho have died when he was four? But what happened if he did ran across the street? That pregnant women’s cab was supposed to crash onto his apartment?

Is it possible for a person to see them? Can he communicate to them?

He is about to find out real soon

Class was ending and he couldn’t stop staring at the clock above Mr. Yoon’s head. Not only him but also almost all the twenty-seven students were staring at the ticking white clock. Minho smiled when the bell finally broke the silence of the classroom

He sighs of relief; packing his stuff slowly already making small plans for the holidays in his head. Jonghyun came to sit on his small table.

“Fish and chips at the SWOOP?” he asked all too cheerful, how can he not the holidays are here

“Awesome!” he swung his bag over his shoulder and follows his overly excited friend out of the classroom. The hallway was half empty, the footsteps of other student sounded distant. They were on the forth floor after all. Jonghyun skipped down too excitedly leaving Minho to chuckle over his ridiculous act

“Careful, you don’t want to hurt yourself”

Minho’s whole body froze; it was coming from on top of the stairs. He recognizes the voice any day.

“You…” Minho turned back to came face to face with his two mysterious shinigamis. He had now full confident in calling them shinigamis. Which means…

Is he going to die? Since the silver one was talking to him. Or is Jonghyun going to die? Since he was referring towards Jonghyun’s just now dangerous act?

“Calm down, we are not here for you. We are here for Do Minhwa” the brim hat shinigami said

“How do you fell witnessing so much death?” the silver one laughed, “Pleasure? Or Despair?”

He earned a glare from the shorter male quickly shutting him up from his sickening sense of humor. He tsk-ed when inaudibly being scolded.

“Don’t mind my brother, he’s mad”

“Minho?”

Jonghyun was poking his head from below the steps; his bright yellow bag was not on his back anymore. He locked eyes with his taller teammate eyes filled with concern

“Are you going to blank out there or enjoy some good old fish and chips?” he half heartedly smiled trying to ease the heavy tension created by Minho’s pale face. It looks as if Minho had seen a ghost.

Silly Jonghyun, you don’t even know

“W-what?”

“You’ve been staring at nothing for a full minute, that’s scary man. Or do you want to go home instead?” Minho looked back on top of the stairs and saw dark eyes staring back. His fingers playing with the sets of ring, wide black hat covering half of his face. The taller one was gone, only him and Minho now

“See you around, Choi Minho”

And with that he left the high school student, black fabric dragging behind his feet, disappearing around the corner.

Chapter 3: Did you say 2 more chapters? ;) Would love to read more of this story. Why does Minho still see them? Why did Taemin come to Minho's house? :)

Chapter 3: I was playing around with the tags when suddenly I found this fic. I remember reading a fic like this a long time ago and I just reread it again. Wow... memory lane. The concept is very interesting and I have enjoyed it immensely :)

Chapter 2: I'm honestly curious how all this would end... because here's no way that Taemin and Minho can continue to live with each other (if they ever get together) unless Minho dies or sth...and this kind of depresses me, but there's also the possibility that they'll just get in a ual relationship and they won't get attached somehow and then lose contact, because that's how friends probably work....sorry , I'm just rambling because I'm honestly curious what's going to happen <3
