A broken promise

“No… Wake up… Please… I'm begging you… Don’t leave me.”   She sobbed, carressing Tzuyu’s cold blood-stained cheek. Tears flowed endlessly and the ache in her chest grew bigger. She looked desperately into Tzuyu’s eyes for signs of life, the eyes that once held so much love and adoration for her, the eyes that used to sparkle so brightly when she laughed.    How cold and empty they were now.    Her tears dripped onto Tzuyu’s cold face, she clung onto Tzuyu’s body like a lifeline, hugging her close, begging her to wake up. Just mere moments ago she was laughing so jovially with her, her long hair flowing in the wind, lips pulled into a gentle smile as they told her how much she loved her for the last time. .    Throwing her head back, she screamed hysterically cursing the heavens above, she begged them to return Tzuyu. She remembered the promise they shared on the rooftop gazing at the stars that twinkled above, where Tzuyu had first asked her out.    “You'll never leave me right?”   She averted her eyes, embarrassed from being so vulnerable and asking such a stupid question. Her head was gently lifted up by Tzuyu’s slender fingers as she looked her right in the eye. Her eyes twinkling like stars as she traced her cheekbones and smiled.    “I promise.”   Then drops of rain started to fall, she knelt there in the middle of the street, holding Tzuyu’s cold hand. The blood pooled around them, sticky and a dark crimson red. It creeped up her skirt and stained it red. The rain poured down and thunder echoed in the distance, was the sky crying with her?    You promised me…   You lied to me…    You said you'd always be by my side…    Why did you have to leave me…    You told me you'd stay with me forever…    Why did that have to be the first promise you broke?   Hands dragged her away from Tzuyu’s lifeless body, screaming and crying, words of consolation whispered gently but she didn't hear. Her attention on the brunette lying on the road, her blank eyes boring straight into her soul. She sank to her knees in despair, she cried until the tears would flow no more.    Her heart wrenching cries for her lost lover echoed in the night heard by all except for the one who was supposed to hear it.   Days came and nights passed, she arrived at the venue dressed fully in black, concealer hiding the dark eyebags from sleepless nights. Her complexion was pale and she was thinner than usual.    People patted her on the back, hugs were given and empty words were said, she couldn't reply, the words wouldn't form, her lips couldn't form a smile, be it fake or real.    Her hollow, soulless eyes would have a tint of appreciation when she looked at those that tried to comfort her but they would eventually stray back to the wooden coffin behind the picture of Tzuyu and her smiling cheerfully at the camera which was taken after Tzuyu’s graduation.    Her smile so proud and loving back then was something that could only be seen in pictures from the past. She closed her eye as a lone tea
