60 Seconds and His Last Romeo

60 Seconds and His Last Romeo

Sunggyu knew Sungyeol wasn’t a person to fall for. The way they met wasn’t ideal. No, ideal wasn’t even enough of an antonym to describe how horrible their first meeting was. It was at the sight of a car crash, one of the vehicles was completely wrecked, flipped over with the windshield shattered and the doors twisted and disfigured, Sunggyu being a paramedic in training. His mentor was immediately belting out orders and Sunggyu was dispatched to treat those with minor injuries. That’s when he noticed Sungyeol, beautiful among all of the destruction. The ambulance’s lights flickering across his face and painting it a variety of colors. Of course when the panicked voice of his mentor called him he snapped out of his reverie as he rushed to his mentor’s side. Lee Sungyeol definitely wasn’t someone to fall for.

The next time Sunggyu saw Sungyeol he wasn’t expecting it. Sunggyu had imagined a million ways in which he could live his life with the taller and even though this was one of them he had never thought it would come true. Sungyeol was running into the hospital he worked at, and just like in a drama he collided into Sunggyu. It was like an overused scene. The way that they toppled with Sunggyu sprawled out on the bottom and Sungyeol on top of him. Sunggyu let out a groan as he tried to squirm away from Sungyeol elbows digging into his ribs and the aching in his and thighs from the fall. “I’m so sorry,” Sungyeol’s voice had an energy in it that would normally annoy Sunggyu but with Sungyeol his reaction was different. Well different until Sungyeol ended up pushing his elbows deeper into Sunggyu’s ribs and yeah that was really starting to hurt. After some pushing and not so gentle shoving on Sunggyu’s part he was finally able to get away from those pain causing elbows before forcing Sungyeol into answering a few questions about his nutrition. It wasn’t healthy for a man that looked Sungyeol’s age to have only skin and bones after all, Sunggyu worried about whether the other ate enough. Sunggyu learned a lot that day. Like the fact that Sungyeol was drowning in student loans, and that he only ate once a day, not to mention that was the day Sunggyu learned Sungyeol’s name.

~

After that they kept in touch. Sunggyu claiming it was for medical reasons even though both him and Sungyeol both knew it wasn’t. Of course Sunggyu decided to keep up the act, staying to strictly health related questions, after all Sunggyu never did like breaking rules. It was always Sungyeol who took their conversation out of business realms, either by talking about the difficulties of college life or asking Sunggyu how his internship was going. What Sunggyu never expected was for Sungyeol to initiate the calls, but Sungyeol did. First the calls where once a week, then twice, and then for hours every day. Even Sungyeol’s squeals growing on him, though he tended to act annoyed when he heard them because seriously how was that even humanly possible.

~

It had been a month since he had gotten Sungyeol’s number when Sungyeol stopped by the hospital. Sunggyu always wondering why he ended up being in the front whenever Sungyeol showed up. Of course it was due to the fact that Sungyeol had done some stalking to find out Sunggyu’s schedule since all intern’s had one, Sunggyu would find that out later on in their relationship. “Doctor Kim, my stomach hurts,” Sunggyu knew he was probably breaking rules by doing this but when it came to Sungyeol he ended up breaking a lot of rules anyway.

“I am not a doctor yet Sungyeol,” Sunggyu answered his annoyance showing in his voice, trying his hardest to stay focused on the desk work he was supposed to be doing.

“Way to kill the feel, you are supposed to be getting all flustered at how sultry I made the title sound,” Sunggyu choked on his saliva at that, Sungyeol’s childish whining just becoming louder.

“Keep dreaming kid, anyways what brings you in? If you were really sick you wouldn’t be able to be this energetic let alone make a few failed wisecracks to get into my pants,” Sunggyu’s voice even more annoyed. Didn’t Sungyeol have college or something? Why did he have to bother him while he was working?

“Is it bad that I wanted to see you, we call like every day,” Sunggyu made the mistake of looking up to see an over exaggerated pout on Sungyeol’s face had melted away his irritation.

“You’re so immature,” Sunggyu couldn’t help but let out with a chuckle, “whatever happened to the manly persona you seem to carry on the phone?”

“Oh trust me, I can be very manly,” Sungyeol tried to drop his voice to sultry and a slight red was blooming on Sunggyu’s cheeks until Sungyeol’s voice cracked on the manly. Sunggyu clutching onto the edge of the reception desk trying desperately not to fall over from the laughter that racked his body.

“Save those lines on someone who actually looks at you that way kid,” Sunggyu was cut off.

“Sunggyu stop flirting on the job,” was the gentle reprimand of one of the older doctors, Jang Dongwoo, who had clearly misunderstood the situation. Sunggyu about to offer a guilty apology only to be stopped, “Sunggyu has his break in 30 minutes, he has it at that time every day and really enjoys the cafe across from the hospital so you can continue this then.” Sunggyu really hated Dongwoo for being so kind at that moment but when he saw Sungyeol practically skipping out of the hospital he couldn’t say he wasn’t excited. Comfortable, hilarious, and sweet that was how Sunggyu had always dreamed his first date to go.

~

After the first date, Sungyeol made sure to take him on others. Everyday during his break Sunggyu would be dragged away from the hospital by Sungyeol and taken on some new adventure. Often running late to his job but a kind Dongwoo always covering for him, a knowing smile on Dongwoo’s lips. Sunggyu never knew why Dongwoo went through the trouble of covering for him, well that was until the day he found Dongwoo pinned against a wall by an intern named Lee Howon. After that Sunggyu covered for Dongwoo just as much as Dongwoo covered for him. Sungyeol managed to change so much about him, yet Sunggyu had never thought that change could be this exhilarating.

~

Sungyeol had managed to grow unbelievably close to him and Sunggyu knew their relationship was everything he had ever wanted. Where they boyfriends? No they were just friends, but the closest friends could ever get without crossing the line of lovers. Or maybe the drunken kisses that neither of them could remember was enough to prove they had long crossed that line, but what they didn’t know couldn’t hurt them. So of course Sunggyu had never thought change to be necessary. Yet he couldn’t say he was completely surprised when at midnight a drenched frazzled Sungyeol was at his door. “Are you an idiot?” Sunggyu asked at first, annoyed at being woken up at this time but before Sungyeol could answer he changed his query. “Just how big of an idiot are you?”

“WIll you go out with me?” Sunggyu’s eyes widened at them. Well at least to the amount that eyes like Sunggyu’s could.

“What kind of an ask out is this anyway? Aren’t you supposed to spend time and money trying to bribe your future boyfriend into saying yes before you ask them out? You reek and why the hell are you wet and it’s the middle of the ing night, I was sleeping, you better be thanking every God out there that I love you too much to say no,” Sunggyu growled out. Sunggyu hadn’t ever felt anything as warm and as bursting in his soul as he did when Sungyeol smiled that wide smile of his that should off way too much of his pearly teeth and pink gums to be attractive, or at least that’s the lie he told himself.

“I’ll make you food to make up for it,” Sungyeol tried at salvation only to be scoffed at.

“No you’ll go and take a shower so I won’t need to take care of a sick boyfriend tomorrow and then you are joining me in bed,” with that Sungyeol was pulled into the house and a chaste kiss was pressed against Sungyeol’s wet lips before Sunggyu went back to bed.

~

Sunggyu had learned to love the feeling of Sungyeol over the next few months. Whether it was the ridiculous whining on mornings in which certain night time activities would leave Sungyeol whining about soreness. Or those days when Sunggyu decided that he missed Sungyeol snuggling into him but was to stubborn to admit it and so played a horror movie instead. Always relishing the way that Sungyeol pressed into him and tried hardest to muffle any of the screams Sungyeol would have normally let out. Plus it totally wasn’t creepy that Sunggyu knew exactly what to give Sungyeol to drink so that Sungyeol would melt in his arms, not creepy at all, but besides the love making nothing much changed between the two of them. Sunggyu never really thinking that change was necessary and always assuming that Sungyeol was fine with that.

~

“Am I just your friend? Do you not love me?” Sungyeol was at the brink of tears and Sunggyu couldn’t help but admire just how beautiful the sight was.

“What brought this on Sungyeol? Of course I love you,” Sunggyu could hear the frustration in his voice. The time in which their relationship was only love, well that hadn’t even lasted half a year before the fighting began. Sunggyu was tired, tired of the fighting, tired of desperately trying to hold onto Sungyeol whose ideals were so different from his.

“We haven’t changed at all from being just friends…” Sungyeol trailed off and Sunggyu truly couldn’t handle fights every week.

“I am trying my best and you seem to not want to try at all, Sungyeol, I can’t try any harder if you don’t want to put in any effort of your own,” Sunggyu knew his words would only leave hurt, but he figured it was about time Sungyeol felt the same crappy emotion Sunggyu had to feel anyway.

“What do you mean? Are you accusing me of not caring? Do you think that i don’t want this to work too? Sunggyu I have tried so hard, you can’t say you haven’t seen my effort,” Sungyeol’s voice raised and Sunggyu’s heart broke further at that.

“Just forget I brought this up Sungyeol,” Sunggyu’s features deflated as his body visibly aged.

“No, you’ve made your point clear. My love was never enough, good bye Sunggyu,” Sungyeol’s tears kept falling as he made his way out of Sunggyu’s apartment. Sunggyu watching him leave because he knew that he was just too different from Sungyeol’s ideal for Sungyeol to ever love.

“Goodbye, Sungyeol,” Sunggyu’s farewell echoed in the empty room.

~

“We are loosing his pulse,” Sunggyu reported to Dongwoo a boy with beautiful long limbs under them both. Sunggyu knew from the moment he first saw the boy, bleeding and pale being pulled out of a flipped over car that he wouldn’t survive. That didn’t stop Sunggyu from imagining the life they could have had together. The life he wanted them to have together but as the heart monitor flat lined that future was no longer attainable. Though as he stared into those beautiful amber eyes with life slowly fading out of them, he couldn’t help but feel joy that in the one minute he imagined a future with the boy he had ensured that he would forever be the beauty’s last Romeo. Though of course as the only memento he would ever have of this star crossed love, he took the boys work badge smiling at the passport sized photo of the boys delicate face and the name Lee Sungyeol printed elegantly underneath it.
