One Step Closer

Aspen was knee deep in work, her hands covered with charcoal smudged gloves, when a knock on her door sounded, breaking her concentration. With a curious frown she pulled her gloves off and stood from her seat, making her way across the interior of her room to reach the front door. She opened the door to find JB on the other side, his hands in the pockets of his jeans, and his eyes intent on her; he smiled, sending her heart up into .
“You’re done with work already?”
“I just got off an hour ago,” he responded in explanation. “Can I come in?” Without hesitation Aspen agreed, stepping aside to allow him access to her dorm; he crossed the threshold and she closed the door behind him.
“I can’t hang out yet,” she told him, following him further into the dorm. “I’m supposed to spend two hours on this project today, and I just started.”
“I’ll just wait for you, then,” JB said simply, moving to take a seat at the foot of the bed, behind the chair and easel Aspen had set up in the corner, and rest his back against the wall. “It’s been a while since I watched you work.”
“That’s putting it lightly,” Aspen scoffed, reclaiming her seat and putting her gloves back on. “The last time was, what, the summer before my senior year?”
“I think so,” JB agreed pensively. “You were working on crosshatching…a vase of flowers.” Aspen paused, her eyebrows raising in surprise.
“Why do you remember that?” she said with a light laugh. JB laughed as well.
“I bought you the flowers.”
“Ah…” They were quiet for a while, accompanied only by the soft music playing from Aspen’s Bluetooth speaker. She was reminded vividly of that time in Miam
