One Step Closer

JB was sure that the worst days of his life were upon him.
That was what it felt like, at least. Days had passed, so many of them, and he’d had absolutely no contact with Aspen, no matter how many calls he made, or voicemails and text messages he left and sent. He had been barred from going to see her, because of school and work, and with each day that passed his torment grew; with each day that passed, it seemed as if Aspen was drifting further and further away from him.
He couldn’t take it anymore; none of his methods were working, and he had stopped caring about putting priorities before her. He opted to skip his last class of the day and made his way over to Aspen’s house, parking on the curb outside to wait. It wasn’t quite time for high school to let out, but he didn’t care; he chose to wait for her there, drumming his fingers against his knee repeatedly as he looked out at the neighborhood, trying not to think of too many memories, or watch the clock too hard.
It seemed like an eternity had passed, but finally he could hear buses in the distance; he sat up in his seat and stared down the street, waiting for her to appear. Finally, she did; he could see her heading down the street towards her house, her frame drowning in the four-sizes-too-big sweatshirt she wore – she kept her eyes on the ground as she walked, one hand gripping the strap of her backpack.
“Aspen…” As she drew nearer to her house she reached into the pocket of her sweatshirt for her keys and looked up finally; her eyes landed on his car and she stopped completely in her tracks, her face morphing into a blank expression. She didn’t seem like s
