I'll be Home... For the New Year.

Back So Soon

After four months of waiting, it was finally time! The day had come… well, at least, was a day away! I was so excited! I almost couldn’t believe it! Have you ever been so excited for something you thought you were going to explode? I have! I am!

It was the day after Christmas, and I had returned home from my mother’s house. It had been four months since my boyfriend, Kris left to Canada. He was doing some strange form of school there-- one that forbade any contact with the outside world, other than once a week. He sent me letters, and every time I received one in the mail, I locked myself in my room to read it in private. Sometimes they had y messages, and other times they were sweet and cute. I never cared which they were.

I spent the entire day cleaning the house that had become quite a mess without Kris here. He was usually the neat one-- with good reason. Whilst trying to clean the bathroom, I left the water running, and in turn, flooded the entire bathroom. I also burned the sponge I was trying to heat to clean the microwave. I was more of a mess than my house. I was SO excited for Kris to come home. My phone rang, and I quickly answered it with a cheerful (yet, out of breath) tone.

“Hello?” I waited a moment for the other voice to speak. When they did, I couldn’t help but grin. “Oh, hey, Kyungie!” It was my very best friend, Kyungsoo. He was calling to check up on me. “I’m doing fine, of course! He’s coming home tomorrow! How could I not be fine?”

“I know how you are, Yeol. You’re going to work yourself sick today, then be too ill to greet him tomorrow. I’ll be over in about an hour, so take a break until I get there.” I laughed.

What are you talking about, Soo? Me?” Kyungsoo remained silent for a moment, then spoke again.

“I’ll be over in an hour.” With that, he hung up. I pouted and did as Kyungsoo said. I flopped down on the couch and set the phone by my side. I began to doze off, then the phone rang again. I jumped nearly six feet off the couch before answered.

“Soo, don’t scare me like that!” When I heard the voice that was on the other line, my breath caught in my throat.

“Sorry if I caught you at a bad time, babe. This is Kris. I’m just calling to let you know that I have a bit of registering to do before I can come home. I promise you, I’ll be home for New Year’s Eve.” There was a pregnant silence. “Baby?” I blinked a few times before clearing my throat.

“Y-Yes, love. That’s okay.” More silence. “How are you--” There was a shout, and then Kris sighed.

“Sorry about that, babe. It’s the coach. He’s being impatient. You were saying?” I cleared my throat again, in fear that he’d have to go.

“I miss you,” I said, meekly. He hummed and smiled-- I could tell.

“Do you still have it?” I nodded quickly and clutched the trinket that was around my neck. It was probably the item that I cherished the most in the world. “Babe?” I face-palmed and responded with an ‘uh-huh,’ since he couldn’t hear a nod. He chuckled and sighed. “I’ve got to go… just take care of it, okay? I’ll be home in a few days.” I held the phone tighter and sighed. “I love you.” The frown that was stretching across my face disappeared as he said those three magical words.

“I love you, too.” He hummed happily, then shouted something back at the person who was initially yelling. “I’ll see you in a few days.”

“Bye, baby. Muah!” I blew him a kiss back, then the phone clicked. He’s gone again… but at least I got to hear his voice once more. It was so nice… so nice… As I began to fall asleep once more, there was a knock on the door. I grumbled and whined, and then got up to answer it. It was Kyungsoo and his boyfriends-- yes, plural --Kai and Baekhyun. Open relationships were strange to me. I rolled my eyes. Of course he had to bring them. They never left his sides.

“Yeol! We’re here to help!” I smiled a bit, knowing that even if Kris wasn’t here, my good friends were. I let them all in, and they helped me clean up my disaster of a house. It was a little house, but a BIG mess. “Thanks for letting us help! Tell us when Kris gets here! Good luck!” With a goodbye, my friends left and I was alone once more. The solitude was nice, but only for a while.

I made myself comfortable on the couch, then fell asleep instantly. I didn’t realize exactly how tired I was until I woke up feeling more groggy than I was before. I grumbled, then rolled onto my back. I felt a hard object stabbing into my waist, and pulled it out from under me. When I discovered it was the phone, I smiled. I couldn’t believe I got to hear Kris’s voice again after so long. I sighed and tucked the phone against my chest to cuddle it… bad idea. It rang and caused me to throw it in the air as I flailed like an octopus and fell to the floor. I gasped for air, then clutched the evil object.

“Hello,” I answered, breathlessly. On the other line, I heard laughter.

“Hey, baby!” I blinked in surprise. It was Kris, but how? Two days in a row was a stretch of the imagination! “I just wanted to let you know that I’ll be home tomorrow at one!” My heart began to race and I began to party silently. “But! Be prepared for that to change! We aren’t positive yet, but that’s what’s supposed to happen! I gotta go! I love you!” With that, he hung up. I looked at the phone in disbelief. What just happened? Tomorrow? Oh my god, tomorrow!

“Tomorrow!” I jumped to my feet and scrambled for my clothing. I threw on my shirt and pulled on a baggy pair of sweats. I didn’t even bother with shoes, and sprinted out onto the slick walkway with just my slippers. I flew into the driver’s seat and reached for the ignition. Then it hit me.

“Tomorrow. TOMORROW, not today.” I smacked my cheeks a few times before getting out of the car, slinking inside, stripping, and flopping down on the couch. I’m so clingy! I can’t believe it! What an idiot. Ugh…

I got off the couch, where I’m sure there was a permanent impression from my body, and went to the kitchen to get some easy food. The entire day was boring. I ate a boring meal, took a boring shower, played a boring video game, and then went to boring couch-- I mean, sleep. I did have a strange dream, though. I dreamed that Kris was my knight in shining armor, riding a white horse with luscious locks flowing behind him. Only, he doesn’t have armor or luscious locks… or a horse. I smiled to myself as I stood up off the couch and stretched my arms above my head. I looked down at my phone and saw that it was…

“TWO O'CLOCK!?” I quickly pulled on clothes that weren’t matching, and I was quite unsure on whether or not they were even relatively clean. I quickly zipped away in the small car that Kris’s parents bought me, then arrived at the airport, some number of stoplights and middle-fingers later. I quickly ran into the large building and looked at the screens. When I asked the woman at the desk, she said that Kris’s flight had arrived nearly forty-five minutes ago, and that he probably took a cab home. I ran to the gate he was supposed to wait at, yet there was no one. I frowned and kicked myself a hundred times.

“Stupid Chanyeol! Idiot!” I walked briskly to my car, and pulled out of the lot quickly and carelessly. It was a good thing there was no oncoming traffic, or I would have been hit. I drove carefully on certain roads, but others I took like it was the Indie-500. I was nearly home when I gasped.

“MY NECKLACE!!!!” I frantically searched myself and the seat beside me, then pulled over. I looked under my seat, behind my seat, and in my coat. It was nowhere to be found. I drove back to the airport, parked my car relatively close to the doors I exited, and sprinted in. I searched frantically where I had walked before, and was frightened when I couldn’t find it. I looked under the chairs at the gates, I checked the bathrooms, and then I asked the receptionist where to look. She told me it was hopeless and that someone had probably taken it.

After trudging through the thin layer of freshly-fallen snow, I found my car. I sat down in the driver’s seat, and then lowered my head into my hands. I couldn’t help but cry because of how stupid I was. I couldn’t believe I lost Kris’s gift to me. It was our love charm! We were never to remove it, except for to shower or swim. I felt like the worst boyfriend ever. It may have been a black hemp necklace with a simple oval-shaped locket-- a cheap little thing… but still. It was priceless to me. I wouldn’t be surprised if he booted me right out of the house and broke up with me, although it was my house.

I drove quickly back to the house, though I decided it was a good idea to take a short-cut. Bad idea. I took a corner a little too sharply, and skidded around the turn. I gasped and covered my face as I watched the large pick-up truck screech to a halt right before me. I was expecting to wake up in the hospital, or wake up dead, but to my surprise, I was okay. I opened my eyes and saw the truck a mere two feet away. I quickly got out of the car and looked at the man, who was doing the same.

“Sorry! The snow got me,” I shouted. I bowed at the waist and he reciprocated, and we parted ways. I took the highway home, instead of backstreets, and I arrived safely. When I opened the car door and saw the living room lights on, I grumbled. “There goes the power bill,” I whined. I got out of the car, and and as soon as I planted my foot on the ground, I slipped and landed on my .

“DAMN IT!” I wiped the tears of frustration and humiliation off my face, and then shuffled to the front door. My wrist hurt from landing on it, but I think my pride was more hurt than anything. When I opened the door, I was not expecting the smell of vanilla to blast in my face. I stopped in my tracks and thought for a moment.

“Baby?” Kris’s voice flooded my ears as I opened the squeaky door widely. No sooner had I looked in the door and saw him, than my arms were around his neck. I had ran across the wooden floor in the living room, jumped high and flung my arms around him. He staggered backward, but remained standing.

“Yeol!” He wrapped his arms tightly around my waist and lifted me an inch or two off the floor. I buried my nose in his neck and was delighted by the warm, brown-sugar-scented body spray. Oh, how I missed my gay-as-hell boyfriend and his feminine tendencies. I kissed his neck softly before pulling away.

“What are you doing here,” I asked him. He smiled and grabbed something off the table and shoved it in his pocket. I couldn’t see what it was, but I assumed it was another one of his cheesy little gifts.

“Well, I waited at the airport for a little while before taking a shuttle home.” A freaking shuttle. “You weren’t home, so I just decided to make myself comfy,” he said as he pointed to the bag of clothes strewn across the hallway.

“Hey! I just cleaned the house!” I pouted and scurried forward to pick up the mess he had left. When I saw that the trail led all the way into our bedroom, I turned around in exasperation. I opened my mouth to complain, but stopped again when I saw him… on one knee.

“K-Kris, what are you--” He held up his hand and pulled the clothes out of my hands. He let them fall to the floor, then I saw what he was holding. He was holding the necklace. “The necklace!!” I lunged forward to grab it, and he held it away from me. I pouted harder and nearly began to tear up. The whole day had been long and frustrating and annoying, and I felt like hiding in my closet. Yet, Kris knelt there and smiled.

“Baby, I found it on the floor of the airport. I knew that you didn’t mean to lose it, and that it probably fell off your neck-- after all, it is old and the clasps don’t hold like they should. So don’t worry.” I smiled softly, then Kris raised the necklace for me to take. “Open it.” I blinked in confusion. The locket has been empty for the entire time I’ve had it. When I opened it, I saw a small note. When I unfolded it and saw what it read, tears lined my eyes. ‘Marry me?’

I looked up and saw that Kris’s hands were no longer empty. In his palms he held a small, black, velvet box. He opened it slowly and I gasped. Hiding inside was a beautiful silver ring with diamonds. With shaky hands, I reached down and took his face in my fingers. He smiled and slid the ring on my fingers. “Will you marry me,” he asked. I could only stare in shock. After a moment, my brain began to work again, and I nodded.

“Yes! I will marry you!” Kris jumped to his feet and enveloped me in a tight hug as tears of many emotions streamed down my cheeks. After the long day, the long fours months, and the long three years, the wait was finally over. I found his lips and kissed them gently. I couldn’t believe it. Finally, I was Mr. Chanyeol Wu.
