I had originally decided to keep 'Unconventional' quite fluffy and happy, but I had an idea for later on in the story and it would add some sadness to it, but n

If it adds more dimensions to the story, go with your gut. Nice stories are so much better than stories that end badly, but at the end of the day, it is your story and if you are kind of wanting to add something to it with a little bit of sorrow, then go ahead and do it.
